2003 Arctic Cat 400 Auto 4x4 Wont Crank

Trying to help a friend get his machine going. Need help.

It has sat for 10 months. (indoors). We just get the clicking from the solenoid trying to start it.

He had just charged the battery, but I tested it at only 9.5 volts. I replaced it with a used one I had which gave 10.7 volts.

Question: should I not be getting about 12 volts from a good battery?

I tested it to the solenoid, and got the 10.7 volts on the battery side, but only about 1 volt on the starter side of the solenoid when the start button was pushed. Pulled out the 30 amp main fuse and looked good, and tested good with a meter. Cleaned terminals of fuse and re-inserted it. Still the same measurement.

Next was to disconnect the cable from the starter terminal. Now when pushing the start button, I get the battery voltage (10.7) up to the end of the wire for the starter.

Me thinks something in the starter saps the power off???

Next I removed the starter from the engine (easy to get at , at least). Connected the cable back to it and (touching case to ground) had the start button pushed, it spins fine and no sounds come from the solenoid. This is a NO LOAD condition for the starter though. Put it all back in, and no crank, just clicking from the solenoid.

My best guess is a low voltage situation from the battery. I will try jumping it from a vehicle battery today to see if it makes a difference.

My next best guess is a faulty starter, brushes shot and wont handle the load???

Also, as an afterthought, tried the manual pull start, after a few pulls it started right up. This should indicate that the neutral safety switch and emergency kill button are functioning fine and cant interfere with normal starter operation.

Advice would really be appreciated.

Thanks

dave

Your doing what I'd do, but you may also have a bad solenoid, your eliminating things as you go, and unfortunately that's all you can do. Another thing I'd be concerned with would be how the carb. looks by sitting 10 months weather indoors or not. Bet it is a little gummy in there! Good luck and hope you get it!

To close this issue, and help others with the same situation/tests, the new battery is the same premium battery, charged with the Junior battery tender, and although it is going to be left on charge until tomorrow, is already reading 13.2 volts.

Morrow of the story, more volts turns starters. Make sure you have a proper battery tender and use it.

Now that you have it running you might want to check the oil. If it was left outside and there was gas in the tank it may have migrated to the crank case. I picked up one that was sitting for a year and had to drain 4 gallons of gas from the crank case.

I ran sea foam through the tank as well and it cleared up the smoking issue i had. Just a thought.

      Hi Guys!

New member and could really use your advice. I would have to believe this has been an issue for others but a search here came up with nothing......? (Probably me not doing search correctly)

      I have an 87 Big Bear 350 YFM350FWT
The OEM Mikuni BTM carb is shot and would rather replace than rebuild.
It is no longer made and I have had good luck with NICHE carbs so I ordered a #K-CRB-0006 This was what they said was replacement when ordered. This Carb only uses 1 Throttle cable. The Slide is linked so it uses one. (OEM had 2nd cable coming through top to move slide)

Problem is when I ordered a replacement Cable from NICHE (#C-CBL-0061) the Cable wire is a little short, not allowing Throttle to return all the way down to Idle position. I called NICHE and they are at a loss. Haven't gotten back to me after 2+ weeks.

What would you recommend other than a carb rebuild?
Can I just use 1 of the OEM cables (It is the right length) and snip/disconnect the other that went to top of Carb for Slide?
      Or ??

Thanks in advance for any advice you have!!

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

      Hey all!
I'm on a mission to buy my first UTV soundbar as a gift for my dad(a newbie on ATV). I'm aiming for something that offers great sound quality without breaking the bank – my budget is around $250. Right now, I'm considering options like ecoxgear, kemimoto, and boss.
Does anyone have experience with these brands or specific models that you'd recommend? Any advice or suggestions would be super appreciated!

Recently picked up a 1991 Lt230e for repair. Compression is a little low Id say, around 80psi, I also have spark but the spark is odd . When cranking the spark is a constant arc. I’ve got it to sputter but never fully turn on. I believe the spark is my issue, being constant and not detonating at the right time. I’m not sure whether this issue is an electrical fault like some missing ground, a faulty cdi, or a timing issue. Any ideas where I should start?

I added more fresh gas it sat one day now, it's acting up again. Before cleaning out carburetor it wouldn't idle good and had gas leaks from carburetor. Now it idles pretty good but, if I increase throttle speed at a certain amount it starts missing bad. I'm going to try and post a short video. Just about ready to give up on this thing.😒  you can see reflection perking in video.
