1997 Polaris Scrambler 4X4 400 transmission Grinds in forward - Any ideas ?

Hi all , I have a 1997 Polaris Scrambler 400 4X4. It will not go into forward and if you keep at it and it does go into forward gear it will pop back out if you are going down a hill and your rpm's drop. It goes into Reverse very easy with no grinding. It grinds like crazy trying to get it into forward. You can hear it click into gear then all you hear is a light grinding in the transmission that get louder with the rpm's raising without going into gear. the 4X4 works fine.

Sometimes when you get it into gear it will stay in gear for awhile before popping out and sometimes it will stay in gear just a few minutes and then it takes anywhere from 5-30 minutes to get it to take forward again.

Before i tear the transmission down , does anyone have any ideas what i'm going to run into ?

Thanks for the help

The centrifical clutch cover on my 1996 xplorer 400 4x4 has been vibrating alot lately an now the clutch housing inside has been rubbing the cover while idling. I took the cover off an its not cracked an the belt will need to be replaced soon but still very useable. If i manually pull the housing out away from the engine while it runs it doesnt rub but if i let it go on its own it rubs. Is there a bracket behind the whole case on the motor that maybe wore or the rubber gasket inside the housing spueezed too much over time that the cover is now too close?

had a Sportsman 500EFI, continuously boiling, especially when using Low Range 4WD. even with message "Hot - check engine" fan would be cutting in and out or stopping altogether. New Fan, new Electronic Control Module, cleaned radiator fins, still the same.I opperate in hot climate, Nth Aust. Only remedy was to disconect lead / plug to fan and run fan continuously from the battery.
I have just traded up to a new Sportsman X2 550EFI, also overheating. Anyone had similar problems or any ideas; radiator thermostat wrong setting for hot climate?, Circuit breaker dropping out?, Control Module needs re-setting for hot climate. HELP
I have a Redarc Smart Start Dual Battery Isolator Solenoid installed to run a second battery (for charging satphone / GPS unit / detector batteries etc) but have been assured this is not feeding back and effecting the Elec Control Module.

I recently traded for an old polaris 400 for one of my kids. I have little experience with Polaris quads (I'm used to Yamaha) and the guy told me that he thought the last time he tried to work on it, it didn't have a spark. Any suggestions on where to start with this thing? I haven't tried anything yet but it hasn't ran in 2 years.

Hello,

I am having an issue with my 400 xplorer. It will only top out about 25mph. I suspected the belt was slipping so I replaced it. After a full day of riding about 15 to 20 we headed down the road to return home and the belt burnt in to. I had checked allignment and that seemed OK as well. So now I am looking at clutches starting with the primary because it seems to have the most moving parts. First I priced a new one and found a comet clutch for $299. Then I priced a rebuild kit for the current clutch and found one for $199. That seemed high so I priced the pieces I thought would need replaced at bike bandit including the buttons, the spring, and a bushing. Has anyone rebuilt there primary and had any luck? Is there any way to test it before spending any money? I ran the engine with the cover off just to see what i could see. The clutch moves in and out but the whole engine moves too as the rpm increase the engine tourques toward the rear of the machine. Is that natural or could that be part of the problem? I'm looking for someone that has had these issues to give me a little advise. The things runs perfect so if I can figure this out Im in good shape. Thanks Kevin
