paint on plastic

Recommended Posts

I used the Fusion paint from Krylon. I washed the plastic really good using Comet or some sort of cleanser and a great 3M scrubber pad. I then took some alcohol and wiped it all down to get any residue off of it and painted several light coats of the Fusion paint. It seem to be ok. I haven't really washed it since I did this. I was also going to use the Plastic Renew just to give it another coating on top of the paint.

I've been an auto painter for about 18 yrs. and all paint companies have their own method of painting plastic. when we paint rubber bumpers for cars they all do fine until they get hit by something then the paint cracks.I've never painted the plastic on a 4 wheeler before but my biggers fear would for it to start cracking if you bump in a tree or something.I say all this because plastic gives alot.I think probably the best thing to do is use a wet on wet apoxy primmer of some sort, that way it etches itself into the plastic.I know PPG makes a good apoxy primmer I'm not sure of the name of it, it can also very expensive. thats just my 2 cents worth.

Yeah my plastic color is really close to paint color. I haven't had it paint that long but I think touch-ups would be easy. If you are going to a totally different color I think new plastic is probably the best idea if you budget allows. Sometimes you can get pretty good deals on Ebay on blemished or use plastic.
