1995 Polaris Xplorer 400L dies in forward gear

Anyone,

I have a 1995 Polaris 400L Xplorer that dies everytime I put it in any forward gear. That is unless I push the overide button. Then it acts like Reverse does when your not pushing the overide button. When you put it in reverse it runs like it should but still only runs like the overide button is not pushed. When you push it there is no change....

So in short.

When going forward I have to push the overide button to get the atv to move

When going in reverse i'm unable to utilize the overide button to exceed normal operation.

When in nuatral I have to push the overide button to achieve smooth idle or it dies. When in any forward gear I have to do the same for smooth idle.

When in Reverse the atv will idle smooth without the button pushed.

I hope I haven't confused anyone but this is really starting to get under my skin! :mad:

Sounds to me like a gear selector switch, the override solenoid, or neutral safety switch. I don't have a wiring diagram to be sure...but it definately sounds like an electrical switch issue.

I'm wondering if that is some sort of limp mode...nah..maybe it's too early of a year.

Well I figured it out....

Ended up pulling wire by wire until the problem cleared. When looking at the front of the wiring panel... it was the bottom left Black Wire...

I believe it was an issue somehow with my override button grounding out when not depressed.

Now I have full speed in reverse without using the override.... and no issues with any other features.

      My friends KQ 300 starts fine and runs, as soon as you put it in gear and try to accelerate its bucks and farts like crazy, not moving... I cleaned carb and it worked good for 1 day... now back to same problem.... could it be such as a bent valve????

      Bucking started about a month ago and works ok after 1/2 hour warmup.  Today while working on it i discovered that if i put the ignition switch in LIGHT position it runs fine right from the start.
      I'm stumped!  Any idea why this could be?

      This is something I'm extremely curious about. Has anyone ever attempted to buy a quad (or any other vehicle) from an impound lot? I've always wondered if this could be a bargain, or a waste of time. Google searches do turn up some helpful results. Looks like the state of NJ holds auctions online which I'd be a bit hesitant about.
       
      My online searches haven't really turned up any results of anyone buying an ATV this way. I'd be really curious if anyone tried this, or knows someone who has. I've actually found a couple pages with online auctions for my state, but none had ATVs.

      My Yamaha Big Bear shifts through all the gears good, goes into reverse smoothly, but when i go to get out of reverse it takes a lot of effort to get it back to first gear, and even then it does not go very smoothly, have to pull up on the pedal really hard, anyone else ever had this problem.       So here where I live in Newfoundland Canada, they let you drive your bike on the road provided it’s registered and insured same goes for crossing highways but on trails you don’t need to be insured. And I don’t even think you need a full license to insure your bike they said it was up to the insurance company. I’m trying to get my old 1985 Suzuki 250 registered they have to do a search for it to make sure it hasn’t been in anyone else’s name first. Hopefully it comes back clean I am pretty excited
