1995 Suzuki King Quad 300 4wd starting issue

I just recently bought a really clean 1995 King Quad (280cc) from the original owner with 991 miles on it. This is the model with the three shifters in the middle. battery was dead, but pull started on the first or second pull each time. So today I installed a new battery, and I had no lights (no headlights, no neutral light, no reverse light) and no power to starter. First thing I checked were the fuses. BOTH of them were blown, so I replaced them (the extra fuses were still in the case, so I don't think this was an ongoing issue). With the fuses replaced, I have all lights, including neutral and reverse. I went to start it, and the starter first cranked really slow (like battery was low, which it isn't since I topped the charge off before I installed it), then cranked even slower, than just clicked each time I tapped the key. It almost started the first time I cranked it, but choke wasn't set right.

I am thinking I have a bad starter, but wonder if there are any other suggestions out there. The bike was sitting indoors its whole life, but did sit for about a year without being started. Is there something that would blow BOTH the fuses (a 15amp and a 20amp)? The 20amp was working the dash pod lights and starter. Not sure what the 15amp was for.

ATV runs fantastic, but I am not going to keep pull starting it. I already darn near lost a finger when I forgot to hit the decrompression switch LOL.

A bad starter is a possibility, the slow cranking could also be because of tight gear mesh between the starter gear and starter clutch gear or a problem with the starter clutch mechanism. I would inspect before buying anything. As far as the cause of the blown fuses, high current draw from the starter would explain overloading only of the circuit that feeds the starter motor. If the fuse blows again, I would figure out where the other circuit leads and check for shorts. A bad connection somewhere, or a faulty regulator/rectifier could cause voltage spikes that could have overloaded both fuses. The old fuses could have become loose or corroded, the old battery could have shorted internally. If you have no further problems with blown fuses, I would think everything is fine.

Well, it is fixed. Thanks for all the replies, but when I went back to the atv to try it one more time, it cranked perfectly and fired right up. Been starting ever since. I was thinking maybe there was some corrosion on something that was diminishing the power to the starter. Haven't even had a hint of the problem since posting here. Wait, maybe that is how you fix things? Just post here, and poof, fixed!

Now that I posted that, I bet the problem will return next time I try to fire it....

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.

The 2024 ATVs are out and I was just looking at the websites for Yamaha and Suzuki. The Grizzly and King Quad have come a long way, probably two of my favorite quads over the years. Both of these come with power steering but I almost like the King Quad styling a little more. The plastics haven't changed much over the years either, mayeb a little more rugged. The King Quad racks are more like the Polaris plastic racks (I think they were the first to introduce these) but on a closer look, I think its just plastic covers over the traditional metal racks. The Grizzly still keeps the old style metal racks. I like the display/instrument panel on the Grizzly more.

Thoughts on these two? Here's a pretty good comparison of both 2023 models. I didn't know some of these things like no seat latch on the Grizzly and hydraulic rear brake vs cable. Good video to watch if you are consideting these:

Hello folks, my machine wound up with I think water in the tank etc. It runs but speeds up and slows back down randomly. When not running I don't see gas dripping  from the drain nipple on bottom of float bowl and drain screw is closed tight. With normal idle speed I see no leaking. When the idle speed increases quite a bit on it's own, gas appears to start slowly dripping from float bowl drain nipple? I'm wondering if the carb is flooding and the gas is actually coming from higher up and just appears, to be coming out of nipple but, is actually running down the sides of the nipple? I put a kit in the factory Mikuni carb last year after sitting for a while and I think the gas in the jug I used had drawn moisture. I plan to pull the carb tomorrow and clean everything out. I was just curious if anyone else thinks it's probably something in the carb and is, acutally a flooding problem? Thanks Folks! 🙂
