Help!? 02 Honda 400ex
Posted On 03/31/2012 17:45:25 by Dyoung
Ok, so im not to good with fourwheeler mechanics at all. I have asked a few friends who all say they have never really seen this problem before but a couple months ago a got a 02 honda 400ex from someOne for about 1500. Its rode fine for months. The battery died after a couple weeks without useing it but id jump it off and it would run good. But all a sudden one day when i went to cut it off i hopped off and walked off and heard it sound like it was trying to crank. Then it started jumping foward like it was cranked in gear. It didnt sound like it had much power or something though. Now like every 5 out ten times when you cut it off after riding ,, even with key out and kill switch on it will do that.you have to hurry and undo the battery before it runs into some ones vehichle or something. Please tell me someone know what this is?? Or have seem this before? Please any advice on what it i would help. Thanks

Also check your clutch switch. Alot of guys including me bypass the switch so it will start in gear and you dont have to pull the clutch lever in. I would guess that is bypassed and also maybe a dirty start button or starter relay is sticking too. take the switch cluster off the handlebar (two screws) and clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. The starter relay is a round object that is connected by a short wire to the battery. It is right next to the battery. I would change that at this point anyway to rule that out as you cant take it apart to check it. They are less than 10bux so its cheap insurance.

it might be like dirty contacts in the start button, but that wouldn't explain when the key is out and there should be no power running to it. have previous owners played around with the wiring at all can you tell? i would just check all your wires and make sure none are bare and/or touching other wires and all are connected and grounded well. anywhere there are bends or crimps in the wiring, just check them and make sure. electrical tape is cheap to repair anything you have to cut away to look ... that what it sounds like to me anyway ...
