Bayou won't stay running without starter button held

I have a 1996 Kawasaki bayou 300 2x4 it starts right up Everytime but dies as soon as you let off the starter button if you hold the button it will stay running but don't want to burn starter up please help.. i have put a new battery in, new coil, new plug, replaced cdi, ignition switch, check and cleaned all connections and grounds..

Have you checked your starter relay? Pull out the fuse and put it back in. The relay may be shorted. I looked on

I will check when i get home mine looked a little different then that i dont thank mine had a fuse in it but the main fuse off the battery is good.. Thanks will update later..

I  found the wiring diagram  for your   Kawasaki  online .  The  ignition switch works through the   starter relay, so  as  quadmaniac  says,  it  is most likely  a faulty starter relay..   As long  as you  hold the starter button  you  are  getting  ignition  power as well  as  starter run  but releasing the button  does not  allow  power to  continue  going to the  ignition circuit.

So i got the starter relay today i put it on and still when you let off the starter button its like your hitting a kill switch..

Check the  engine stop switch to  see if it   is  stuck  on, and also  trace the  wires.  We  may  have misled you  on the relay..  There  are  two  of them.  One  is the  starter circuit relay  and the  other  is the  starter  relay  itself.. If  it  is the relay , it will  be the  starter circuit relay.  If that is the one you replaced,  check the  engine stop switch.  According to the schematic  it   should be  open  when the  engine is  running. Closing it  opens the ignition circuit and kills the engine.  Holding  in the start  button  feeds power to  the  ignition circuit until  you  release    the  button.

After installing the new relay i thought maybe the switch so i bypassed the engin kill switch and starter button with jumper wires and a push button at the main harness plug where the kill/starter switch plugs into the main harness and it still does the same thing guess i will order the other relay and try that..

The kill switch  should be  open, not  jumpered. .Disconnect the  kill switch and do  not join the wires together  (no  connection  between wires or contacts,  "open",   connection  between  wires  "closed") .   The  kill switch needs to be  open  for the   motor to  run.

If i disconnect eather wire on the kill switch it wont even crank over i took the harness completely loose from everything and checked each wire all the wires are good all grounds are good but still same thing it starts great and runs till you let off starter button im at a loss any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

My only remaining guess is the  starter circuit relay. If that  isn't it, I'm  beat. After  you  mentioned that  disconnecting the  kill switch  nothing worked, I went  back to the   wiring  diagram  again.  It doesn't  show  the configuration  in  the  run state, so  I  can't  guess what  is open  and closed. Obviously  from  what  you said , the  kill switch  must be  closed rather than  open  as I  thought.  I  see the starter switch  also   connects to the  igniter ( CDI  box). If the starter circuit  relay  isn't  the culprit, that would  only  leave  the  CDI  box , and that  is an expensive  box to  replace. It looks like it  may be time to  bite the  bullet  and see a  Kawasaki  mechanic . I've exhausted  my  guesses and  without  being able to  physically  get to  it with  a  meter  and service  manual , I'm  beat.

If your start button wiring is shorted you are hitting a kill button.  Disconnect the starter button from the harness and jump across the solenoid with a screwdriver and if the bike starts and then dies after removing the screwdriver then it's not the starter button, but i'm betting it is.

    • 1997 Kawasaki Bayou 300 2x4 (klf300b) Runs Bad

      Hey I have a 97 bayou 300 2x4 (klf300b) that i bought for 1000 last June and sunk another 1000 into it already.  When i went to look at it, the seller had warmed it up before hand (he was riding it when I got there).  it ran good so i bought it and took it home that evening... next morning it wouldn't hardly start.  I discovered the carb was clogged, there was chunks of rust in the fuel valve, the choke lever was missing and other things.  I have since cleaned the carb and replaced the fuel valve and gas lines and cleaned out the gas tank and cap.   Enough background on it, the problem is this:  It floods if i push it past half throttle in 4th and 5th gear even going downhill and shifting correctly.  It also has to idle and warm up when you first start it which is really annoying now that its cold...  It also smokes blue smoke for about 15 seconds when started cold-  does not smoke at all once warm but the exhaust still smells like burnt metal.  A friend told me that it didn't have enough compression.  I also found out that the valves are a common cause for low compression on Kawasakis..  I have never adjusted valves before-  the most I've ever got into a engine was a head gasket on a riding mower so I'm new to this.  My goal is to get this bike running and starting cold like a top-  should i tear down and rebuild the top end?  What should i try first?  I tore the carb apart and rebuilt it and fiddled with the air screw and nothing changed.  I also ordered a compression test kit that should be coming in soon. Ive also considered just selling it for like $500 and taking the hit-  Id rather not sink too much more into this machine..  lol

    • 1998 Bayou 300 4x4 Rear Shaft Boot/Seal

      Hi all,  I purchased this quad from Craigslist somewhat against my better judgement due to the fact that the driveshaft boot was leaking oil.  I am assuming it is just the seal that needs replacement.  Does anyone know the part numbers for the seal and boot?  I am also trying to get a hold of a service manual for this so I am not going in blind! Thanks for your help!

      Hey guy and gals I'm a new-be here an just need a lot of help So please forgive me if I'm doing this wrong! First off My name is Rob and thanks for having me here you'll. I just acquired a 1997 farm hand bayou 300 4x4 that is in need of a lot of TLC I traded the fella even up for and old Yamaha street bike I had about $850 into that ran good and did not leak or burn oil but still needed many minor things like brake worked seat and so on So about the Bayou-it runs starts right up and all but is missing some things like the front and rear racks clutch lever and small plastic cover in front of handle bars My issue is that the fella said he put new piston & rings in it about a week ago and checked out the clutches like I said it runs and I know I should have taken more time to check everything out so when I got it home I found out there was no air breather and I can't see how one would have even fit on there the way the carb is so close to the inner frame rail under the seat on it and it started leaking oil pretty bad from the clutch cover (it was clean oil though light in color) The quad is not bad lookin and I can weld up some racks for it but I really need a service manual for this old work horse!!!!! I have no issue following directions other than sometimes giving my own creative touches LOL ANY HELP WOULD BE SO MUCH APPRECIATED THANK YOU AND HAVE A BLESSED DAY ROB
