5 Mistakes ATV Beginners Make

Recommended Posts

even now when im completely comfortable on any atv in any terrain, i ALWAYS take it slow when on an unfamiliar bike or in a new place.  there have been too many close calls where ive run up on a unknown ditch or sink hole in a field and have come close to flipping twice.

Once i get acquainted with what im sitting on and the terrain, then i let her lose and the fun begins!😁

as to riding atvs up rams into the bed of a pickup, i do this too although we usually trailer my bikes places.  three things never to do when loading an atv with ramps is:

never go to fast up the ramps (you wont have a rear window in your truck)

never stop on the ramps and then try to start off again (the ramps will no longer be under your atv and we all know how gravity works)

never miss the ramps (no duh but way to many of us dont know how to aim soooo)

its important to know your quad inside and out as loading with ramps is a more involved activity and its important to keep a even throttle to avoid busting your butt and ruining your bike.  so i would agree for beginners, either go buy a trailer or make sure you video it so when you screw up the rest of those beginners out there might be able to learn from your stupidity

I fall to blame for improper unloading. I was unloading my quad off the side of a trailer and the throttle stuck open. Well long story short. I jumped it off the trailer and cleared a good 6 ft. The rear wheels never hit the ramps. Good thing I know how to handle that situation. I almost wound up in a shed and a tree. Close. So listen up people. Things happen and all it takes is knowledge of what could go wrong before you do it.

Always watch when you have a passenger (if you do). I've seen so many people on the rear of an ATV that isn't intended for two riders get their feet caught in the back tires. This is especially easy on sport ATVS because the fenders don't protect much.

oof yea i wouldnt doo that...  on the other hand i say free for all on utility atvs...  my buddy and i had 8 people on a sportsman 500 once..  fun times👍

Hello everyone, I just picked up an 02 LT-F250F the other day and have been in the process of tearing it down to fix some stuff- one of which was the cylinder base gasket leaking like a sieve. Well, I know why that is now, and I also discovered that someone had been in there before. I didn't take pictures, but it looks like it was probably run low on oil at some point, the cam journals and the "bearings" (for lack of a better term) in the head and the valve cover are totally wiped out, very deep grooves.  From what I know it's very difficult to repair aluminum in this way, so I'm trying to figure out where to go next.

      1. Have someone grind down the head and valve cover and fit actual bearings in since the aluminum is screwed, and have the cam ground down to match.  I have no idea what this would cost.
      2. Buy a replacement head+cam+valve cover.

#1 I was hoping someone might have some advice on, but #2 seems like it'll (probably) be the more cost effective option.  However I'm running into some difficulty, it seems like the 2001 and 2002 models specifically use a different head part number,  11100-19B10, instead of  11100-19B01 like for all earlier models.  What exactly is the difference between them? There are obviously far more of the earlier heads because it ran for over 10 years.  Are they actually interchangeable? I've also noticed there are heads from the LT250EF that has 4 valve heads but also otherwise look identical.  Would those work as well possibly?  I'd like to not have to drop $500 on machine work or new heads on a $1300 quad that I'm already putting a bunch of new parts on.  Oh, and it has a new piston and the cylinder itself looks pretty good too, as I said someone was in here before me.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'll post pics of the carnage tomorrow.

So here where I live in Newfoundland Canada, they let you drive your bike on the road provided it’s registered and insured same goes for crossing highways but on trails you don’t need to be insured. And I don’t even think you need a full license to insure your bike they said it was up to the insurance company. I’m trying to get my old 1985 Suzuki 250 registered they have to do a search for it to make sure it hasn’t been in anyone else’s name first. Hopefully it comes back clean I am pretty excited

I've been using Valvolene 10w 40 ATV oil but, it's like $8.00 a quart. Is that about the going rate? Or is there cheaper alternatives that would be suitable? Thanks

      Hi!
I got my KLF300 running again with your help a couple of months ago, at that time it was the ignition coil that had failed. It has been in use since then without issues until two weeks ago.
When the new issue showed I was going at about 10km/h and it suddenly slowed to a halt. I started it again after that with choke and I drove it 400 meters and parked. Next time it was really hard to start, and since it was low on gas I thought that was the problem. It didn't get any better with a full tank, so I assumed it was the cold weather, and adjusted the pilot slightly.
After that it I actually got it started again with full choke and some slight gas, I drove about 300 meters and then it slowed down to a halt again. After that, it hasn't started again.
The compression is 165psi. The spark has good intensity, the ATV has functioned before with the same spark "intensity"/light. I *assume* that it has gas as well, there is definitely gas on the spark plug when I remove it
I have checked the carburetor slightly, the float works, diaphragm looks ok, but I haven't disassembled it to really look for dust and such in all the small places.
My theory right now is that it might've been some dust in the gas tank that went into the system, it's just a theory
I'm thankful for all the help and pointers I can get, don't hesitate
