96 Polaris not charging when running

Recommended Posts

You need to test the charging system components, stator coil, regulator, the manual will tell you what the readings should be. A standard ohms test will tell you what’s going on. Also look for the easy stuff like damaged wires, blown fuses. Make sure that the battery itself is not bad also and that there is an accessory that’s not draining the battery. Plow ? Lights ?

Also:

You should have voltage on the positive and negative battery terminals when the bike is running without the battery in place and a tester clipped on to the battery leads.

No it won’t hurt the bike. It’s to determine if your battery is getting voltage back from the engines internal charging system. Fuses on that bike should be located around the battery but shouldn’t be difficult to locate. What model and size is the bike? If you have the manual you can locate the fuses.

And if you are hesitant about taking the battery of of the bike you can do the test with the battery on the bike as well. Simply take a voltage reading on the battery with the bike off and start it up and do the same. You should read about 12+ volts with the bike off. With the bike running you should read 14+ volts.

I don't have the manuel for it yet.  It's a 96 Polaris Magnum 425 4x4.   I will try these things when the weather warms somewhat.  I don't have a heated shop and I ain't gonna freeze my hands off to check it out.  I will let you know what I find.  When I find it.

Thanks,   Dave

      Hello Guys!
Dumb question. How much oil registers on the oil level gauge while running? The oil level reads correct when off, but while running I can only see just a little bit in the oil level gauge. Makes wonder if the oil isn't circulating well enough.
Also, whats your preference in battery brands for ATV's (standard or AGM). We don't ride it all that often.
Thanks in advance for any info.

      Charging issue?
I have a 2017 Polaris Sportsman 570 EFI. Yesterday, I start the machine and it says low power (10.6-10.8). This machine is on its second battery. This is a new AGM battery with 50cca more than stock.
Should I look at the regulator or stator?
      Thanks!!!

Got a 04 Sportsman 500 that wasnt running- owner said it needed a stater and a new battery.  It ran rough (been sitting out in the weather for a while).  A friend and I started by adding a new battery and it would start barely with the choke and his hand over the air-filter.  I decided to install the new battery in the holder on the side.  we had it on the rack because the old on was still in the bike.  I tried to be nifty by turning the battery to put the terminals in an easier spot to get to, but forgot to reverse the cables too.  In a sentence, I reversed the positive and negative on the battery like a dummy.  When we discovered my mistake and corrected it, we turned on the bike, but the display did not light up and the key did not turn on the starter.  jumping the solenoid worked the starter, so we thought the solenoid just burned up when I reversed the pos and neg...  new solenoid and no difference.  what have I burned up?  Also, the shifter does not seem to do anything in the trans.  it slides back and forth like its stripped in the trans.  any help would be appreciated!!
I think the biggest issue right now is the electrical.

Came here for help, If it’s in the wrong place I’ll move. I’ve got a 2000 model Polaris Magnum 500 that runs strong as can be for about 25 mins until warm, then sputters and loses power. Took it to a shop and they say it’s low compression and they will have to swap the entire engine. Seems a bit much and costs more than the entire bike. Was wondering if anyone has seen this and what the fix was. When I hear compression I think of gaskets, not an entire engine. Seems like if it was that bad it wouldn’t have power cold. I’m at a loss. Any help is appreciated greatly.

      Greetings
I have a 98 Polaris Magnum 425. Runs GREAT for 10 minutes then starts to load up (sounds rich) and looses power. Final;ly just stalls out on idle. If it sits 20 minutes will run again.

replaced fuel, added fuel treatment (seafoam), Replaced plug (carbon fouled), plug wires, air and fuel filter, checked all fuel and vac hoses, REPLACED carb with new. Still no good. Just ordered a coil, not sure if that will help
Note: both the new and old carb only had the idel adjuster screw - cant find the jet adjustments or air/fuel mix screws so I cannot say how they are set.

Looking for ideas short of spending big $$ on Polaris service

      HELP?????

      Thanks

      Dan

Hey all new member so I'm sorry if this isn't the correct place to post, but I'm having trouble with a 2000 polaris magnum 500 I just acquired. The quad ran when I got it but was having problems that sounded like the camshaft, and sure enough camshaft lobe was pretty much gone, so we replaced the camshaft and exhaust rockers and now the quad doesnt have spark. We had the quad running right before we tore the old camshaft out and now no spark. Anybody else ever have a problem similar? We've been checking for loose wires, checked grounds, and double checked timing but cant get it figured out so any advice would be appreciated! Thanks
