I wanted to share an experience and a fix.
Headed out was following a pole line, was looking for a cross track that may take me to this speckle trout looking spot on a creek. All paths and semi paths... failed. Second objective was to reach a speckle trout lake that has been recently stocked... followed 1 trail to dead end, followed second trail to dead end.... while investigating options on foot and the quad idling it died.
It wouldn't start. eventually it did... and when it did … it was essentially a pinned idle. activating the throttle did seem to speed it up but it wouldn't knock out of the racing idle. couldn't put it in gear at that idle speed. got towed out.
when I first got the quad, I ran it off a trail and buried it pretty good in the soft snow... eventually winched out. It wouldn't start. eventually did and it was fast idling. not as fast as this last time. but still fast. it eventually seemed to settle and I got it in gear and by the time I was back to the truck was acting ok. chalked it up to the bike being at a bad angle in the snow.
My investigation last year lead to the throttle position sensor TPS. how to jumper the diag block to see the sensor position on the display,. I focused on this nearly sure it was a detuned sensor or broken sensor again this time.
I tore down the front plastic and stuck my head into the TPS area to see what I could see. What I found was that the throttle body assembly had actually come out of the mounting area (not sure what it is called). the ring clamp was loose I could move it easily. Hopeful, I tore down the air intake assembly above it (air filter...etc) removed a sensor clip and a hose.
I backed off the clamp some more and was able to reseat the throttle body assembly. put some blue lock tite on the clamp screw. When I was cleaning off the air intake assembly to ensure I dropped nothing down the intake, I noticed the underside of the air intake "box" also had a clamp. this screw was completely missing.
I went to the hardware store, bought a metric replacement (brought clamp with me), seated the assembly, settled the clamp blue lock tite that as well...
quad fired right up, idled normal, idled up without hesitation and dropped right back off. Cost of solution $3.87 CND for a pack of 5 metric screws. moral of my story was don't assume an idle issue is a throttle position sensor problem... there are a number of other factors including air pressure, which I believe was my issue.

Hello All, The KYRider site I was a member of for years has shut down. So, here I am. I currently own a 450 Kodiak with several mods and some yet to be installed. Tomorrow, I will look at a Blaster thats in great shape. It starts and runs great. However, It will not go into gear. Im pretty sure I can fix this relatively cheap. I have not priced Blasters in years but the asking price is $600 firm. Is this reasonable? Thanks,

Motorcycle almost rear ended

Just got back from the motocross track, where I busted my quad (2008 KFX 450). Keep in mind that these may be stupid questions. I'm new to riding and don't know anything about anything.
The chain was a little loose, I believe, and I probably should've tightened it (not that I know how to tighten a chain) but I'm not sure if that came into play here. I took a jump and didn't let off the throttle. I over-revved the engine and the rear sprocket snapped off while I was in the air.
It looks like there are 4 bolts that hold the sprocket on and it appears that those bolts have been completely sheared off (see pics below). If this is just a matter of replacing these bolts, that would be awesome. Are these bolts meant to shear under pressure (like the shear pin on a boat propeller)? Also, in the side that still has nuts, that bolt is pretty skinny. The corresponding hole on the sprocket is much larger. Are these some sort of specialty bolts?
Am I not even in the right ballpark with these issues? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing here.

Great to be on the boards. Just picked up a 2013 Polaris Sportsman 550 XPS LE. Its my first quad, and am just waiting for some slightly warmer than 10 degree temperatures to get out and enjoy it. My buddies were pushing me towards a dirt bike, but considering that I have kids it made more sense to go with a quad, not to mention I am just at an age where trying to keep up with seasoned riders just sounded painful.
In any case, I plan to do the weekend getaways with the dirt bike crew, fully understanding they will likely be doing something different than I will. I ordered a bunch of gear for the next trip. Helmet/goggles, jersey, pants, gloves, and boots mostly MX gear. It made sense to have clothes designed to be in the mud and dirt and offer protection should something go wrong.
In any case, my 2 wheeled friends are feel that its exceptionally ridiculous for quad riders to be outfitted in MX gear, and very mock worthy. ESPECIALLY, if the gear matches. They feel anything more than a helmet is ridiculous. I totally get skiers wouldn't dress like boarders, and when you golf you dont wear jeans etc. but is there a similar dress code for ATV riders?
