1987 Yamaha Big Bear How To Test CDI

Big Al

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm new to this forum. I just bought this big bear. This thing is show room condition. Now I haven't had time to dig into it so it might be easy to fix. But the guy I bought it from said it needs a CDI box. Now is there away to test these to see if it's bad? I see they are hard to find. Any recommendations on batteries? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll get back with results one I get time to look at it.

Well I tore it down and tried jumping it. It turned over for a second and then some buzzing/clicking came from the rear and briefly from the front. I would hate to by that CDI box not knowing if that's the problem. I see some relays in the rear. Just wondering the next steps to getting this thing running?

Not necessarily, although that is not completely ruled out. What could be your issue is a lack of a full charge-12 volts or so- to everywhere it needs to go. If the solenoid is buzzing then there is something causing less power from getting through. Make sure your battery connections and other connections are tight and that all your grounds are good too. If a ground is corroded then sand it and see if that helps. Hope this helps.

I just had this starting problem. The hot wire on the starter stud was deteriorated to rust powder. I replaced the starter and it cranks easily now. I too now have no spark. I am not saying the two are connected in any way. Just trying to help and learn...

Hi there, I’ve got a 1990 Big Bear 350cc and was having trouble getting it going. I tried just about everything. I even bought a CDI unit. Well it turned out to be a faulty carburetor. I bought a single cable one and it works great. So…I’ve got an extra CDI unit that I’d like to sell. $150 Canadian + shipping

I’ve also got a completely rebuilt dual cable carburetor that cost me $495 ca. I’d sell it for $300 Canadian

Wow. Everyone is all over the place on this.

Great looking bike awesome find lucky you!

The cdi is a working or non working component.  So the fact that it fires up I would say it’s good.

Now since you have all the plastics off and everything is exposed I would take your time and unplug each plug one at a time and clean and add electrical lube and reconnect.

A good eye glass screwdriver allows you to get in and scrape clean the contacts of all the plugs.

after that go through all the wires that are attached with a bolt or screw, grounds, battery connectors and the starter relay .  It’s very possbale that the starter relay is no good and a much cheaper part to replace. Keep in mind the electrical system is big! That means the coil wires, ignition, handlebar controls, regulator etc. do it in sections and move on to the next section.

After all this is done if it still does the same thing it hasn’t cost a penny before you start guessing and buying parts and all bad connections are ruled out.

Put a fresh battery in that baby and see what you got.

Lastly is I’ve had a bad cdi box and one way that it will not perform is if it has moisture inside. Simple stupid way to get that out is to put it in the oven for 10 min on 250! Make sure the oven is on 250 before you put it in and no more then 10 min. Take it out and cool off and try it.

Good luck and keep up posted.

      Hey I have a 1997 big bear 350 4x4
I replaced the shifter shaft and the shift arm linkage and the rod when I installed them all I was unaware that you had to line the dot on the shifter shaft with the gap on the linkage arm gap put it all back  together and rode it I can't get it to shift in the right gears  I can move the shift cam by hand and goes in different gears but with the shifter shaft in it riding I can't put it in R or N
Anyone know how to line up the shifter shaft and the shift cam s

Hi guys. I have a problem where the quad will start and run well for about 5 minutes and then it dies. On inspection the airbox has oil in it (quite a lot). The oil is pumping through the cylinder head breather hose. This problem first happened suddenly. I have since done the top end including, piston, gaskets, rings and valves. I have also done the carb (not that I thought that this was the problem). The compression seems normal. The only thing that I can think of, is that I did not grind the valves well enough. Anyone experienced this? If so, how did you fix it? Any other thoughts?

I WANTED TO UPGRADE THE CARBURATOR ON MY 1992 BIG BEAR 350, SO I ORDERED A NEW CARB FROM EBAY.  ACCORDING TO THE WRITE-UP IT WAS A GOOD FIT FOR BIG BEARS FROM 1988 TO 1996.  WHEN I REMOVED MY ORIGINAL CARB I NOTICED THAT IT WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE NEW CARB MY CARB HAD TWO THROTTLE  CABLES THE NEW CARB ONLY HAD ONE CABLE.  HOW CAN I MAKE THIS CARB WORK ON MY TWO CABLE THROTTLE?

      Hi Guys!

New member and could really use your advice. I would have to believe this has been an issue for others but a search here came up with nothing......? (Probably me not doing search correctly)

      I have an 87 Big Bear 350 YFM350FWT
The OEM Mikuni BTM carb is shot and would rather replace than rebuild.
It is no longer made and I have had good luck with NICHE carbs so I ordered a #K-CRB-0006 This was what they said was replacement when ordered. This Carb only uses 1 Throttle cable. The Slide is linked so it uses one. (OEM had 2nd cable coming through top to move slide)

Problem is when I ordered a replacement Cable from NICHE (#C-CBL-0061) the Cable wire is a little short, not allowing Throttle to return all the way down to Idle position. I called NICHE and they are at a loss. Haven't gotten back to me after 2+ weeks.

What would you recommend other than a carb rebuild?
Can I just use 1 of the OEM cables (It is the right length) and snip/disconnect the other that went to top of Carb for Slide?
      Or ??

Thanks in advance for any advice you have!!

I have been exploring all the options available, so many, its hard to choose. I have kind of narrowed it down to the Honda Pilot, Subaru Outback, and Kind of looking at the Outlander, although its a little small,  the new one is nice looking. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations or gripes with any of these rides. I have driven Jeeps for the past 25  years and they have been great, but their price point has gotten to high. Expieriences good or bad would be helpful. Thanks!
