1996 Polaris Sportsman 500

Recommended Posts

I am new here and just wanted to say Hi. I just acquired a 1996 Sportsman 500 that a family member bought new and used for a week each year at a hunting camp. It was always stored inside and serviced regularly. If anyone is aware of anything on this machine that needs special attention I welcome your advice.

Thanks

Welcome, sounds like a nice quad. I would start with a manual, you can find them here. I would start with fluid check and grease it up.. Good luck and have fun.

I agree! First things first; oil, lube and filter. Fresh spark plug and some clean petro.

Get familiar with the bike and be safe.

Good luck and send some pics. We love pics!

A manual is at the top of my list, but I need a few more post for that. I've got to get the plastic all off and give it a good cleaning. Put a winch on last weekend and saw there is a lot of dust buildup under the covers from sitting. I'll send some pics soon.

    • 97 Polaris sportsman 500 runs about 10 sec then dies

Hello, Everyone first time here, I appreciate this opportunity, I have a 97 polaris sportsman 500 that I just acquired, been sitting awhile ,would not turn over with a new battery, replaced the starter, got it to turn over, but no fire, replaced the coil, cdi box, new spark plug, spark plug wire and boot, still no fire, So I changed out the stator, boom I have Fire, Carburetor was in bad shape ,so I installed a new carburetor, a new fuel pump and filter and all new hoses, and before I tried to start it I cleaned the fuel tank, well here we go, It started right up idled like a brand new one, Idled for about 10 seconds and died, fired right back up idled great and revved up great, but in 10 seconds it died, fired right back up, this time I held the throttle about half throttle, and it kept running, but when I let off it died, so I then adjusted the throttle cable from all the way tight to all the way loose, and vise versa, still the same thing, Please somebody help, cause I'm bout to give it the HAMMER TEST.

    • Who’s hunting?

So for us here in NY southern zone the deer rifle hunting season opens up tomorrow morning at sun up!  Looks like about 8-10 inches of ❄️  fell up where we hunt. The bikes are ready, gear loaded and ready to go bags packed and the truck gassed up!  To all my fellow hunters that will be out there chasing that big buck; should some of us get lucky..... may be using their ATV to load up that deer and take him to the butcher  I say good luck be careful and be safe.   Post some pics of how you did or didn’t do lol because it’s not about always shooting something but the time spent enjoying the woods and fresh air and riding in the ❄️! My oldest boy is of age to have his rifle and big game tag this year so this is a special year, wish him some Quadcrazy luck!  Im banking on one of us getting lucky 🦌 this year especially bc I am out of venison 😢. I make some really good jerky and pot roast!   Hope to see some pics!

Hello all, i am new to the forum and will likely be back several times. I have ridden quads before but never owned one... till now. I just bought a 1996 Polaris Magnum 425 4x4. The output shaft that drives the front chain sheared off and needs replacement. It needs a few maintenance things but I have bought most everything I need. Runs good and will be fun to fix it up.

I've owned bikes and quads for years.  Currently ride an 07 Raptor 700 SE.  My 15 year old son has a TRX 90 but he grew so much over the summer that he's outgrown it.  I picked up a project bike (1998 Kawasaki Bayou 300) for a couple hundred. It started but wouldn't run so I knew the carb was in need of attention.  Tires all shot (likely the original).   Pulled off the carb and put in the cleaner for a couple of days.  Pulled it out and cleaned it up and installed a kit.  Reinstalled and fired right up.  Now I've got to chase down some wiring gremlins from the previous owner. No ignition key just some toggle switch.  The wiring looks like it was hacked up by freddy kruger.  Got to tear into it after we get back deer hunting this weekend.  Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
