Considering a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 90

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone new to the forum.  I’m looking to upgrade my son from an Eton brand 50cc atv. It’s 2 stroke and can take awhile to warm up in the cold months. Anyway, I found a mint looking 2004 Polaris Sportsman 90 ($1400)and a few 2015 and 2016 Arctic Cat DVX 90 atvs ($1800) in my area.  Just wondering if I’m crazy for considering the Sportsman since it is 10 years older. Basically    Are the newer atvs 2015/ 2016 made any better or worse than the 2004 atvs? I know it is hard to say without seeing them and testing them out, but any experiences in general may help me to decide. Thank you

Welcome to Quadcrazy! Have you checked Kelly blue book on atv values to see where your at with what a atv your looking at is with ? Every state is different.

https://www.kbb.com/motorcycles/4-wheel-atv/

Now for the performance concerns my feelings are the Polaris although it’s a little older is still a great bike. Very reliable and hold value. I think that price is a little out of line but not bad. But your looking at a much newer bike for about $400 more. Well worth it.  Most of the newer bikes have fuel injection, better suspension and overall newer features.

The only thing with the Polaris is the due to the year although a solid bike if you hold on to it for a while and have no intention of passing it down and want to sell it the year will be the haggling point as it’s your concern right now (the year) think about the next guy lol.

Either way I think you can’t go wrong as far as getting a solid bike. I would go with the newer bike (just my preference)

Thank you for the advice, I am kind of feeling the same way.  My wife and I have Sportsmans so I think he wants the same kind. I don’t mind spending a little extra for something newer.

its an 05 sportsman and its worth $700 tops in VA.  Polaris will not let you down.

I will say that arctic cat is reliable too though- I would go either way-  Polaris has better performance.

Thanks for the info.  I too thought it was overpriced, I know prices in RI typically are over KBB listed prices. Kind of frustrating, the prices are out of whack here.  I think I will take a look at the arctic cat soon.

I am trying to figure out a way to make my high beam include the 2 front lights that come on in low beam mode. As it sits now I need to use the low beam to see the trail in front of me but can't see far ahead. On high beam I can see ahead but miss most of the trail right in front of me. Does anyone know of a kit that would mate the two front lights to the main headlight on high beam ?

Well, it overheated then started blowing white smoke!!
I have it torn down & the cylinder appears to be warped. Going to have the head checked out next but in the meanwhile... Does anyone have the torque sequence/specs for the head bolts??
      TIA

Hi, I'm new to this forum and am in desperate need of help. I recently purchased a 05 polaris sportsman 90. The quads motor runs great. The quad will not accelerate forward. If it does its slow and will eventually pick up speed and then runs unbelievable. It has great power and torque in reverse but couldn't go over a twig in forward. I'm lost, any help would be greatly appreciated. The belt is in good condition and the and drained the trans oil and there is no metal shavings

I'm working on a 2018 Sportsman 570 and found in the service manual that there are two different torque methods for the head bolts depending on whether the bolts are silver or black. Well, silver bolts came out of my engine and I'm going to be replacing them with new bolts, however the parts fiche doesn't specify bolt color or that there is even an option!?!
Has anyone on here been through this before and can offer insight??

      TIA
