i looked it up and i believe its a 1986 350.  would it not be easier to cut the gas tank in half, clean and sand all the rust down and weld it back together?

You could but it has to be done by a professional that knows what they are doing and then pressure tested etc.  might as well pay the $200 for a new one.

A trick  we've often  used to  clean small   tanks is to  put some pebbles or  marbles in them  and  give a good shaking to  knock  any rust, scale or other solids loose ..  Shake out the rocks and crud. and have a look.  If there's still  build  up  in there,  do  it again.  Finally  rinse it out  and thoroughly dry.  It would be a challenge to  cut  a tank  in  half to  clean  and weld it back together. Unless  you're very skilled and the tank isn't too  thin you'll  make  nothing but a useless mess out of it, A  welding shop would charge you more than the cost a  new tank  to  do they job  if you  could even  find one to take it  on.

I  Have done the Red kote to seal a 88 fourtrax 300 and even with the second coat it still is trying to leak on me. I would go with a new tank or Plastic one.

I think im going to go with a 'new' tank.  took a closer look at the inside and this is what i saw (i cut the tank in half so that you guys could see)

so the inside of the tank is coated with some kind of thick paint that peeled off and is almost rusted through in some places.

That looks pretty bad. Def going to need a new one. I will keep my eyes open for one.

i found one on ebay for $99 as opposed to $200+..  inside looked non-rusty too.

Also, I'm trying to figure how much more $$ i want to put into this bike until i start loosing profit..  How much is this thing worth in its condition?  I would guess out of the $1000 i paid for all, i paid around $300 for this one..  with parts i have $428 into this bike (not including labor).  it need new front tires (24x9x11) i'm guessing at least $100 for those..where do i stop?  lol

oh and the tick- it runs fine, but the intake rocker had about 1/8in warn off the end where it hits the cam lobe.  this is a dual intake valve engine so a new intake rocker is $100

If you stay under $750 your fine.  That bike in decent shape goes for $900 to $1000.

ok do you think im losing or gaining value by spending the extra dollar to get everything fixed on it?  To be perfect it needs an intake rocker new front tires, the foot brake cable, air filter, battery, starter, could really use some new plastics... I'm just trying to figure out where to stop..  I went all the way with the bayou and lost $1700 lol (of course there was more under the surface on that bike..)

should i keep looking for a rocker or spend the $100?  It seems pretty steep to me..  the rocker for the bayou was $50 or so for a oem..

I don’t think you will get back what you put into it. Your into the bike for about $500 right now give it take a few bucks.   So tires, rocker arm, gas tank, starter battery l, brake cable etc. that’s another $500 minimum. So bam 💥 $1000. You would not get that much for it so now it becomes a personal/financial decision.   Do I bring this bike back to good or do the basics like the brake cable, battery, gas tank and starter and move it along.  Maybe the rocker so you don't sell it with a tick.  

Get $750 maybe $800 or more and you’ve learned a ton of knowledge and didn’t loose money only labor but you learned about this brand and how it all works on the next one and there will be a next one.

Great advise and I enjoyed reading this as well I look for more as I learning too but have worked on small engines for 48 years man stuff has changed made to hard for ,most to work on except with guys like you as just time patients and money.Your a good teacher Frank  

I have a 350 which stopped being sold in the US market only canada but found out my cdi was done and takes a certain one only but runs perfect again hard to believe really it old and a tank bit very tough my kids road this 24/7 for years and still runs like new sat for 2 years fired up instantly when changed the CDI box.The carb never been touched either.Had to say keep the pages coming as helps everyone

You would not believe how many old tanks are still on the trails today.   

My oldest bike up until not too long ago was an 86. Sold it and it still runs great.  

I love the new bikes and the technology put into them today but to be honest if it were not for problem codes coming up on the screens pointing owners in the right direction we would all be screwed! 

Not a lot of people know what to do today when problems arise.  

On our older bikes we have the usual suspects. 

Carburetor, CDI, stator and ignition coils and general wire failures.   

Unless it’s mechanical like valves and timing issues. But either way it’s limited to these above listed items for the most part.  Other than that with proper maintenance they will run for decades.

so i think im just gonna fix the tank/fuel pump issue, get an air filter on it and a choke cable and sell it- its super easy to kick start and runs great.  the tick i dont think im gonna worry about either because its adjusted right so no damage is being done to the cam or valves..  but yea thats one of the hardest parts of flipping anything is knowing where to stop..

so got the gas tank in and i think the fuel pump is bad- not sure because the bike just stopped running- acting like its flooded or not getting gas..  I still had the make-shift tank supplying the carb while i checked to see if the pump would work and it wouldnt start with the kick start..  so i jumped it with the warrior and it finally fired up but would only idle.  then i was gonna see if it would move and it choked out and wont start again.  just replaced the ig coil- i know the old one only fired half the time.. so i know it has spark, but gonna run out and check that, maybe replace the plug..  its the oem carb and i did nothing to it so far, was running great yesterday...

maybe somehow plugging up the pump caused the spark to trip or not get juice?

nope doesnt work that way you best check for spark then if have spark next is something in carb i say.

Absolutely agree w @scotty2hotty01 . Spark first then the carb.  You could have fouled the plug as well.  Check the spark with a new plug first. Go from there.

wasnt getting gas.  duh lol im stupid..  so im gonna order a pump.  could hear the old one making clicking noises but wasnt pumping anything.  also all rusty form water getting in it.  the tick is getting worse..  dont know if im ready to put another 100 into it for a rocker or not..

pretty darn quick for an old 4 speed quad tho...

Is a rocker for that bike that much ?  The bike looks good.  I would say go for it.  If you go to flip it then that tick is going to be a turn off to the buyer.

yeah thats what im thinking..  the tick seems to be getting worse too..  i'm gonna order a fuel pump first and see if that fixes the makeshift gas tank..

      i ordered a keihin carb for my 07 trx 90 and it fits nicely but the new cable they sent is way too long and i can't make it work.  the old honda cable cap [that fits on top of the carb] is too small to fit.  the keihin cap is approx 3/4 or 19mm.  honda cap is more like 1/2 in.  the keihin has a rubber boot on the cap where the throttle cable goes through . i don't know how to find the right length [most cites don't give the length].  i'm not sure how cables fit into that boot  and do i need to add the length of the boot to the cable?  the old honda cable is 28 inches total, but the cable movement is only approx 2'' which would not be enough to reach the actuator block on the keihin.  looking to find a throttle cable compatible with the keihin.  any help, please.

      I loosened the allen bolts on the carrier and when I went to put my driver in the alot to pull back and tighten the chain, I noticed the holes were facing the front of the bike. I tried to slide a driver in and tighten the chain but the thing would not budge. I nearly ripped the tip off the driver in the slot. Any suggestions?

      I've got a beater 84 honda trx that instantly starts smoking and gets really hot  from it looks like the exhaust pipe coming out of the motor on the right side of the machine. When I fire it up it starts getting hot. Any suggestions would be awesome! Thanks so much

      Hi guys.  First post, hope you can help.  As above 1991 Honda fourtrax.  Starting, running fine until a few weeks ago. Used primarily to put my ski boat in the garage (put 2" ball on front).  Any way, had just backed boat into garage, turned off to crank trailer wheel down, when I went to restart got nothing.  
      No neutral light, no headlights, no reverse light, would not turn over when start button pushed.  It would crank and run when I jumped the contacts on the start relay.  While running the neutral light will come on, although it is dim and flickers.  Reverse light on when running and in reverse.
      What I have done to this point:
      1.  Used jumper cable to ground battery (-) terminal to engine block thinking ground wire from battery to engine may be bad.  No neutral light, no start.
      2. Applied 12 volts to start relay.  Got a loud click like it was making contact.  I didn't have the battery/starter cables connected to the relay, but I am assuming it would have cranked at that time.  
      3. Disconnected neutral switch wire.  Grounded neutral switch wire with jumper wire. No neutral light, no electric start. 
      At this point I am thinking ignition switch vs broken wire in the harness going to the neutral switch (due to dimness and flickering when running).
      Any and all suggestions to help track down this issue are appreciated.
