1988 Yamaha 350 Big bear No spark

Fixing for a friend. Atv was at a different friends house to be fixed and he rebuilt the carb and had it running nice, then it shut off and no more. He replaced the key and the coil.

 

So he got busy, so I am helping, I checked the wiring from the stator to the cdi, and from the cdi to the coil. All is good. I checked resistance on the pickup coil, good, and on the source coil, open. I buy a new stator (China) and the 4 prong plug only has 3 wires in it while mine has all 4. I checked resistance in the source coil and it's in the 300's. I pulled one of the old pickup wires out of the old stator and wire it in the new one. Still no spark.

 

Why do the wires differ, I checked the VIN again and it's "J" for the year and I got a 1988 stator. Please help!

You checked the stator coil resistance? If so what was the reading? Have you checked the usual suspects like the kill switch, bad fuses and the secondary coil going to the spark plug ? Also have you looked at the regulator.

The 3 white wires? No

 

Haven't checked the regulator, how do you check that, I could search that if it's easy to find.

 

I haven't checked the kill switch wire. Will tonight.

 

I think I checked the fuse in the front of the atv, will double check.

 

I check the coil resistance, I have also been using a Ford coil on plug as well to rule out a bad coil as the new coil thumps a lot when you manually spark it.

Def check the stator coil resistance reading and see what you have. My feeling is the stator is bad.  Should be NO continuity from each wire to ground.   Then wire to wire should read close in numbers and within range of the spec.

Any idea why the new pickup coils only have 3 wires while the old one has 4?

The stator should have three wires.  The pick up usually has two.  Post some pics of the areas and plugs. It helps a lot.

Here are some diagrams to the bike. Get through these tests and if the stator fails I guess we have to see how one would wire the after market stator in.

The old pickup coil, 180

New pickup coil, 400!

New source coil, 280

 

Last night I pulled a prong from the old harness and wired it into the new pickup coil. The new on had them soldered together so I split it and made it 4 wires. It had no spark before and after.

 

I'm gonna check the kill wire, I did check the kill switch awhile ago.

Kill wire is good. I'm gonna send the new stator back, what do you recommend to get? I noticed the 1987 stator part has 4 wires, I'll try that one I guess.

I’ve always had luck with Caltric. I know a few ppl have said they weren’t happy. To date on starors only I’ve been happy. They always matched up and held up.   That’s the only aftermarket part that i would purchase. I only buy oem otherwise for all other parts.  They make it well but then again it's only a stator coil. It’s not rocket science building stators.

That's good to hear, I'm hoping that it's a 1988 bike with a 1987 engine in it or something like that.

Stator came today and I tossed it in real quick, no spark. Note I just have the cover on no bolts and only a little oil, I just turn it over a few times, does it need to crank a bit before spark?

 

I don't have any time tonight so I'll have to mess with it tomorrow. I'll have to recheck everything and all wires.

 

Does the voltage regulator affect spark?

 

Does the source coil color wires matter

 

Do the pickups matter, there's two can they need to be switched?

Double check it’s installed properly and the pick up coils are properly in place. Go through all the plugs and make sure they are tight.  Test the regulator and secondary coil. If all tests well then you have to think about swapping the cdi box.

      got a big bear I'm working on for a guy and it was flooding gas out into the air box, but still running.  I pulled the carb and its beat up just like his other bike I worked on for him (the bayou 220).  Its a weird carb tho:  the throttle comes in at two locations.  it has a plunger and a butterfly.  Is this necessary and could I just switch to a butterfly carb?  The problem with it is it has a broken float fork (the metal piece that holds the float pivot in place.  I'm assuming it is causing the flooding.  also the rest of the carb is well worn out and most of the screws are stripped telling me that it has been fiddled with too much by someone who didnt know what they were doing.  Also, the oil temp light is turns when key is turned and then goes off after a second- dont know if thats supposed to happen or not.

      hi folks - Today I installed a new starter for my 2001 big bear. 400  The old starter has been dead for several years but I'm just too old now to be yanking that pull cord any more.  
      Here's my issue:   When I pushed the start button the starter turned over ... and kept going - even after the start button was let go.  After 20 seconds or so the starter finally stopped .  I pushed the start again and the same thing happened ... In fact, it kept trying to start the machine even after I turned off the key!  (for about 10 seconds).  (I also noticed that the positive side of the battery got very hot to the touch.)
      Any ideas on what's happening?  thanks

      got 7 atvs off CL recently for a good price.  one of which is a yamaha warrior.  anyone know where the vin is printed on this bike?  Haha good place to start as I do not know year or size yet.  The former owner says needs exhaust ans and clutch work.  he said it ran fine until the clutch cable broke and then I couldn't get the new cable adjusted right and it would grind gears.  things I see:  clutch cable locked up again, no brakes, carb leaking (green with algae around the bowl and has gelled gas stalagtights on it), aftermarket exhaust melted the airbox so I need something different and a new air box.  I would like the use the current exhaust if I can but I have a feeling its a redneck fix as it looks like there is an ace bandage holding it to the exhaust pipe (its an aftermarket slip-on exhaust), so I'm not sure about that- lets get the bike running first.  also, battery (looks brand new, what a shame) is dead, 0 volts.  Otherwise, bike looks to have not been wrecked, and plastics are ok (it sat outside under a 'tarp' for 3+ years since it was run last).  any tips and advise on where to start first would be awesome as this is my first clutched bike (manual).
      the clutch is my main concern- I've never rode a clutched bike so I dont even know what its supposed to feel like.  lol I'm spoiled on my automatic polaris

      Have a 2002 Kawasaki 650 Prairie.Have just had carbs rebuilt($950 bill) & it still pops back through carbs.Mostly at 1/4-1/2 throttle.What can I tell mechanic to do when I take it back?(A Kawasaki dealer mechanic)

      My Rancher cranks right up and runs great for a while and then it will suddenly sputter out and die. It usually cranks right back up and again runs great for a while and then same thing. Yesterday it got to where it acted like it wasn't going to crank back up a few time but eventually did. Any suggestions??

      I just bought a Yamaha Big Bear 350 from 1992. The previous owner has run it on regular engine oil and I have problems with the clutch slipping. I think that's the reason.
      So what should I do?
      - Just change oil and it will be OK?
      - Clean engine/clutch + new oil?
      - Or do I need a new clutch?

      It is guessing the centrifugal clutch that slips. It has two clutches , it also has a "regular" clutch .
      Anyone who has any experience of using wrong type of oil?

      I have a 2002 yamaha bigbear 400 4x4 with a seized engine. I was able to free the piston with the old "fill cylinder with oil and let it soak" and it worked. So I bought a top cylinder rebuild kit , but now I have no idea the process to fix this . I need a service manual....

      I’m working on my dads 2002 Yamaha big bear 400 atv. He was having a hard time starting it for a while and then it quit running for good. It had no spark so u replaced spark plug and then cdi box. Didn’t help so tested stator which a part of it wasn’t working so replaced it. Nothing. I unplugged the rectifier cranked it and had a great spark. Got it in today cranked it and still won’t run but does still have spark. What’s going on? Any help is greatly appreciated
