So you found them inside the stator cover and also in the oil when you drained ?

Yes, exactly. That round pc was stuck on the drain plug. 

What kind of seals are in this engine? It doesn't have crank seals like a 2 stroke does it? Water pump seals come to mind, but, there's no water in the oil or oil inthe water. It hasn't leaked any oil either.

I’m thinking possibly a compression relief spring ? Not sure if the engine has that. But based on the short history of the cam replacement and top end work  that would be my guess. 

See that small spring on the cam ? It’s possible that it has come off prior to the last owner rebuilding the top end.

Most 4 strokes have a compression releif mechanism on the exhaust cam right? This doesn't have anything on the ex cam. Nothing. It looks exactly the same as the IN cam. ANd if there was a spring on the ex cam, how would it get to the stator? IDK. I'm about to light this thing on fire!  LOL

Lol take a deep breath and maybe a step back. To much time at it will make you crazy. My feeling is that spring is exactly what I think it is. But I could be wrong.   If it fell down Into the cylinder it could have easily been mangled up in the cam chain into pieces and basically been pumped through the engine.  I’m thinking along these lines like I said earlier based on the top end work.  I would change the oil a few more times with cheap oil to make sure you get it all out.  You can use paint strainers to catch any debris as you drain the oil and re use the oil over to keep flushing the system.   Once it’s all clear put a better grade oil in. 

If it’s just the small spring chances are it’s not going to do much.   Go through all the gears to make sure it’s shifting, you can do that just by rocking the bike back and forth and go through the gears.  

Stick with the timing to make sure it’s correct  and get it fired and listen to it run. Take it from there.   That pic I sent you is a cam  that’s for your machine.  

The only other option is to pull the engine off the frame and set it on a bench and tare it down.   Not sure how far you want to go but it is what it is. 

Lastly is the previous owner: did he or she give you any background on this machine ? It seems like you don’t have much background history with it as to what was done etc?

Reading this  thread rang a bell  for  me.  In page one Hewas mentioned the  keyways are  opposite of what the videos show when the  marks are all  lined up...  I  suspect the  previous owner lined the  marks up   as per Frank's diagram , but instead of  using the  exhaust  cam to  start  (  #1 lined up  with head gasket ) he  used the intake cam. All  3  would be lined up as illustrated ,  but 180 degrees out of time .

So, the update.... The camshafts are old Stage 2 HotCams. I sent them off to H.C and they are going to put some marks on them so I can time them properly. In the old days. H.C's put paint marks on the camshafts for timing purposes. They wear off over time. They're doing this at no charge. Just shipping. I think it's $15 total. ANyway, the pcs of metal debris that came out of the engine is the starter sprague or starter  clutch. Ya.Came out in many many pcs. Not good. However, I have removed the head and the valves look good and piston and cylinder look great.

Wow that’s a lot of parts.  Great work on the research! Happy to hear the top end is in good shape. Hopefully all else is well and you can slam that thing back together when you get the cams back.

      Hey everyone, hoping to get some help here... my kids 03 KTF 50 Quad has always ran great... they were riding it a couple of hours a few days ago and it died a couple of times (not normal) but started right back up. A few days later my 5 year old wanted to take it for a spin so I started it (2 pulls) and he took off.. he made it a couple hundred yards and it died and we havnt been able to start it since. I have new gas, good spark and 120 psi compression.. it will not start with starter fluid in the intake or even in the cylinder.. the fuel bowl has fuel at the carb... what am I missing? It’s driving me crazy!!

      So I got this '96 Jeep Cherokee XJ that cranks but doesn't start.  It's got around 180k on her but I keep everything in good shape.  Batt seemed strong.

      I used to drive it everyday but this past year I've driven it only about twice a week.  It's been just slightly slower to start in the last couple of months, but just barely slower.  Was guessing it had something to do with aging plugs or something.

      Drove it yesterday and everything was normal like always, sat overnight and today it cranked but didn't catch.

      Any ideas on where to start?

      Hi all new to the forum I have a Yamaha Moto 4 champ (100cc?) (YFM100) so I've been trying to get this thing to start for awhile honestly I'm running out of ideas so I'll start with the things Ive replaced and done first it was not trying at all and then I put a brand new battery then the terminals broke so I bought some nice copper ones fixed that up so now battery is got good voltage and all that I have checked all the plugs cleaned everything off so anyway it still wasn't trying but I couldn't get the crank case off and I didn't think using fire was a good idea lol so I busted the crank case off on the left side(if you are sitting on it) wierdly enough the flywheel started spinning I thought it was odd but went with it then I replaced the spark plug still wasn't getting spark so I replaced the ignition coil then it was getting spark next the carburetor was really gross I cleaned it out still wasn't working so I in turn decided just to replace it with a new one so I did (PS I never figured out how the fuel lines hook up if someone wants to help with that to lol) also for good measure put a new air filter so then I pressing the button Everytime I replace something and nothing so then I think what if it's the stator so I have no idea what a good or bad stator looks like but me being to rough I broke the wires on the thing but still no changes the fly wheel spins gets compression (I think) getting spark from spark plug idk other tidbits that might be useful I don't have a clutch line so idk if that has something to do with it I do have the break zip tied in to bypass the safety feature also the throttle cable is in fact broken and I'm working on buying a new petcock for my gas tank because my current one is broke I have very limited money this is supposed to be a project before I go to school for welding and automotive tech so I don't have any money to get a mechanic lol but I'm pretty confident in my ability to do anything u suggest any suggestions are welcome I'll edit and submit pics
