How to fix my trike

Recommended Posts

So I got a old three wheeler, a 1986 Honda 350 atc, and it was sitting for a about 30 years. The first tging I did was clean the gas tank and now it looks brand new on the inside. Then I got new spark plugs and cleaned out the carb so it looks brand new. And now it won’t start. So does anyone have a answer as to what I should clean next. It has ran when I bump started it and then it just died, I have tried to mess with the air fuel mixture but that doesn’t seem to help at all.

Welcome to Quadcrazy @reddotshooter03

I had that same bike. Is it the Big Red?

I would pull the spark plug and test for spark. If spark is good then spray a drop of starting fluid into the air cleaner as your cranking it.  If it fires up then it’s a fuel problem. Maybe the carburetor  is not cleaned right (it happens) or the fuel line or valve (petcock) to the carburetor is not clear.

Start there.

Ok so while your cranking hit it with starting fluid and see if it fires up.   Spray it into the carburetor just a little.    If so then your float is stuck closed or the fuel port on the carb has a blockage.  I know you cleaned the carburetor but it happens.   The starting fluid will tell you that it’s obviously not getting fuel if it fires up.

Alr that what my buddy said and I know that it really can’t be anything else but I do know that it’s getting fuel because when I loosen the screw(the flat head without the needle on the bottom of the carb) gas will poor out of the float

I can look up the spec on the valves.  I will double check and get back to you.

So you have spark you said and you spray starting fluid into the carburetor and  still not firing up ? That does not add up.  Have you checked compression?

Valve lash should be a whisker less than zero so that its zero when oiled up. It just doesnt need to be too tight so that the valves stay open or so loose it chatters and ruins the rocker tip. It would have to be bad wrong to keep it from running.

I was riding my 400ex one day and when i shut it off to put it in the garage i tried to start it put again to drive it into the garge and it wouldnt start.I put a compression tester on it and its like 30 psi with out throttle and 0 psi WITH THROTTLE.
when i put my finger over the hole it fell likes its pulling my finger in more then its pushing it out

Has good spark. When i took it into the shop the said it had 1oz of oil in it and a tiny pit of metal shaving(TINY BIT LIKE 30 flakes)
When i try to pull start (push start/roll start) it made a not normal sound  and wouldnt stay running.
If my bottom end is blow why would it still turn over fine,
Are my valves siezed or not working properly
or is my timing off causeing valves to not open in correct order with fire
PLEASE HELP all help is appreciated

Hi guys.  First post, hope you can help.  As above 1991 Honda fourtrax.  Starting, running fine until a few weeks ago. Used primarily to put my ski boat in the garage (put 2" ball on front).  Any way, had just backed boat into garage, turned off to crank trailer wheel down, when I went to restart got nothing.
No neutral light, no headlights, no reverse light, would not turn over when start button pushed.  It would crank and run when I jumped the contacts on the start relay.  While running the neutral light will come on, although it is dim and flickers.  Reverse light on when running and in reverse.
What I have done to this point:
      1.  Used jumper cable to ground battery (-) terminal to engine block thinking ground wire from battery to engine may be bad.  No neutral light, no start.
      2. Applied 12 volts to start relay.  Got a loud click like it was making contact.  I didn't have the battery/starter cables connected to the relay, but I am assuming it would have cranked at that time.
      3. Disconnected neutral switch wire.  Grounded neutral switch wire with jumper wire. No neutral light, no electric start.
At this point I am thinking ignition switch vs broken wire in the harness going to the neutral switch (due to dimness and flickering when running).
Any and all suggestions to help track down this issue are appreciated.
      Thanks
