2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 4x4 Coolant Leaking from the Exhaust

Recommended Posts

Have a 2001 polaris sportsman 500 4x4 atv and when I put coolant in the radiator it starts leaking from the exhaust. The valves are sealed but it stopped making compression. Do I need to just replace the head? I just rebuilt the hole top end and this is the only thing +valves that I have not replaced and was wondering if that is why it's not starting up. Need answers please.

Sounds like a massive head gasket leak or cracked head if you have coolant leaking. Does it run? Its not just condensation, right? Normally if you have a bad head gasket and coolant gets into the combustion chamber, you'll get white smoke. But coolant leaking out is a first for me..its just dripping out of the muffler?

theres no way it could be leaking coolant from the exhaust because in order to fill the manifold and pipe to the point where the coolant reaches the exhaust, the motor would have to be hydro locked with coolant

you said it didnt have compression whats it making?  and are you sure its coolant coming out and not condensation or gas?

It had compression before it started to leak but now it's leaking it doesn't have any. And yes I'm sure its coolant and not gas or condensation. I know this because when first started to fill the radiator up with coolant it would take a long time for it to fill up so a thought there was a problem or it was leaking from somewhere so I heard a leaking noise and it was coming from the front of the motor out of the exhaust port on the top end. And I know the gaskets aren't bad because there brand new and I didn't see any leakage from the head where the head gasket was anywhere.

if its leaking cooland its the head gasket or (very rarely) a cracked head.  if its leaking air into the exhaust its a valve.  did you torque your head bolts to spec and did you thoroughly clean the old head gasket off before rebuilding?  it could mayb be a warped head but if its an internal leak its most likely the head gasket

Yes there torqued to spec. I have an torque wrench to do it with and also the head gasket that was on it is metal so there didn't seem like I had to clean anything. This is the new oem one I just ordered to and just ordered a new head for it to.Screenshot_20200914-151856_eBay.thumb.jpg.6ab2f3790e643b3203801ca0b1d2b548.jpg

Hey so i sold my 04 rubicon and wanted something new so i went to NC and bought a '13 scrambler 850XP LE EPS.  love it the only issues with it when i bought it were a leak in the front tire and the mice had chewed through one of the spark plug wires.  currently have a substitute hooking the chewed end to the ignition coil so itll run on both cylinders however im having an issue finding a replacement coil wire for it and was wondering if yall had any advice.  i need the longer of the two coil wires and i can only find the shorter one online.  will throw up some pics of it when i can

I recently purchased a 2000 polaris xplorer 400 4x4.  When I bought it the starter was bad, speedometer didn't work,  and it had been sitting for 5 years. I replaced the battery, and starter. Changed all fluids, and got it running correctly.  Then replaced the speedometer in an attempt to make sure the awd would be available when needed.  And took it out for a couple hour ride with a buddy.
It ran great that ride with no serious problems just a little carb issues which I was able to take care of on the trails.  Then a couple days later I decided to take it out for a ride by myself,  again ran great no issues other than a couple times it seemed to cough and then take off again.  That day when I was loading it I noticed coolant dripping onto the trailer and the overflow bottle was empty.
Got home and decided to drain the counter balancer, when I did that I got about 3 cups of coolant. Im guessing that it needs new seals and all for the water pump.
My question is how difficult is it to do the water pump and should I attempt it or should I send it down the road to the polaris dealership to get it done?

Well its finally happened, its time to replace the belt on my 2011 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O.   Is there anything specific i need to know before getting into it? Is there one brand of belt i should get over another?   I'm still on my first Polaris and plan to keep it at least another 8 years.

I have a 2000 Polaris Sportsman 500. The Speedometer got water inside of it and it sat for a long time. So now that speedometer is trashed to say the least and i need to find a replacement. I don't want to put up the cash for an oem one so i was wondering if anyone knew any good speedometers out there i could use. I've found many speedometers i like but don't know how i'd wire it up without the same connection points. Thanks, any input is appreciated

I've already posted here once about this ATV. Lots of people suggested i check the cam and after a couple months i finally got around to attacking it. I got it all apart and got the cam/rockers out. I'm almost positive they need to be replaced, they're pretty scored up and don't look too hot. Just wanted some final opinions before i drop the money on it. I'll also take feedback on the new cam i've chosen.

Has anyone had any luck putting a different gauge on this machine. Would you happen to have the wiring diagram?
