Suzuki LT185 Adding a battery?

Hello everyone,

My Suzuki LT185 didn't come with a battery from the factory (no electric start). I was wondering if I would need to add a battery if I wanted to install some of those light bars/pods or should I just wire it in to the headlight switch? Will the generator be able to put out enough juice to run the light bar? Also, is it normal for the headlight to get dim at idle, then brighter when driving? Never had a quad before with just a generator.

The lights on older ATV's are fed directly from the stator using AC voltage whereas any other aftermarket lights and accessories (pretty much all LED these days) are DC.  So yes, you would need a battery.  It's fairly common for the lights to flicker or dim at idle on the older ones.  All of my old Honda 3 wheelers did that and got really bright at WOT.

That is a very valuable piece of info. I never knew about the stator putting out an AC voltage. Much appreciated. You saved me from burning up an LED bar. And thanks for confirming the headlight dimming. 

What about a converter for such an application? From AC to DC? Anybody make one?

I doubt the stator in the 185 would be able to handle several pods or a good size bar. They are just made to run the machine, not to charge a battery or power accessories. I imagine you could get away with a single LED cube, maybe two.. i'd have to grab the service manual for my '84 to see the output lol. However yes you would need a regulator/rectifier, ran to the A/C output side of the stator to get your dc voltage to the lights.

Thanks for the reply and video clip. Another valuable piece of info. Much appreciated. Seems like the easiest or quickest thing to do would be to just install a battery and run the lights off that. Would have to remember to put the trickle charger on it after riding though.

Is the consensus here that the stator would not be able to charge the battery?

The stator likely is insufficient.  You would also need a regultor/rectifier that is capable to both regulating the voltage so as not to burn the battery and rectify it to DC.  Might be more trouble than it's worth.

Ok thanks. Looks like I will just get a battery to run the led lights and then just charge it after we ride each time. I also have a question about a rear shock. I'll create a new thread for that. I would greatly appreciate all of your opinions.

      Headlights on my Outlander 570 are junk.  Would like to upgrade to a light bar.  What is the max size (wattage) that it can handle? 
      Can I just split into the high beam wire for an install.  I see YouTube videos of a separate switch that hooks up straight to the battery, but wouldn't that drain the battery if the machine is off and lights cold be left on by accident.
      I'd like to hang it from the front rack as I have a basket installed on the rack that I would like to keep there.  If anyone has done this, please send a picture!

      How are you doing guys I just joined I have a 1998 Suzuki King quad I’m having problems with high RPMs the ATV idols perfectly but soon as a throttle up it doesn’t stall but it just bogs down it has no power any suggestions thanks

      Looking for the rectifier.  Most bikes have near magneto.  It appears the KQ has it in front.
      Can someone tell me exactly where it is? 
      Bike not charging and magneto checks out ok

      Looking for advice on what to try next I bought this quad and it’s has spark and fuel but won’t stay running only fires when I hold the starter button in even when spraying gas into the carb it still dies right away oil was milky white so I was thinking it maybe went under water 150 psi compression so I might be wrong but not a head gasket I am stuck Cause it should stay running with the straight gas through the carb so what should I try

      Hello eeveryone,
      Just picked up an 86 Suzuki LT185 for my daughter, and she's complaining that it bounces so bad over bumps that it nearly throws her off the quad. I have the tire pressures some where around 3 psi. I really can't go any lower than that. I noticed that there isn't anything in the aftermarket world for shocks and springs for this quad. I am wondering what others are doing to soften up the ride. Also wondering if there's a way to fabricate a rear shock, since there isn't one.  I appreciate your feedback.

      Hey yo quadsters, I have a question regarding CCA in batteries. My ATV is cold natured and it will start with my generic battery that's in it, (don't ask me now what battery I have in it cuz I'm at work,) but when I hook up an external battery storage unit (Beatit 1200Amps QDSP 1200A Peak 16500mAh 12V Portable Car Lithium Jump Starter) for quick jumps it fires so much faster.  Which by the way is a bad ass accessory to have around. I keep the battery in the quad fully charged all the time. My question to the pros is how much difference does the CCA of a battery contribute to the quicker start?

      Installed new battery was told that’s what was wrong when hit start button I hear 1 click then nothing?  Can the battery just not have enough amps to crank the starter the first time ? I trickle charged it overnight thought it was enough!
