well its been awhile

as the title says, with school ending and summer begining things have been pretty hectic round here so imma fill yall in on my quad life.

the 400ex is for the most part done, ive pretty much got it the way i want it. the carrier bearings are going out on it so i think ill invest on a twin row carrier. now in about a year, we should have made our last payment on the 400. soon after that we will be selling the 400. idk if i will part out the big things or not, its still up in the air. after she is sold i will invest in a new ktm450xc, which at a ceratin dealership is selling for a smoking price at $6,300 otd before haggling...

all this is HOPEFUL. the 400 has been nice, but i finally figured out that the whole reason my motor blew at the begining of the year was because ive been riding pretty much balls to the wall, high revved. its really a shame to get rid of it after all the work i put into it, but hopefully the reward in the end will be well worth it.

heres a picture of how the 400 sits.

I'll bet you will be sad to see her go...:frown:

Going to a KTM will be something else. Why not go for a Yamaha Raptor or something.....

Have you ever sat on the KTM XC models? I have and it instantly made me change my mind about them. They have the most god awful seat I have ever sat on. Very uncomfortable ergonomics. The SX model feels way better. If they used the same seat it would be much better.

yea it will be a sad day :/

i want something race ready, if i dont go with a KTM ill be looking for a race ready yfz trx or ltr. im not a huge fan of raptors though.

i wish i could, the nearest dealer is 2 hours away with that awesome price.

im not really worried about the seat, im always standing or hanging off the seatup due to the fact i have no butt and sitting in even the plushest chair hurts. as long as its reliable, its what im looking for.

but i wonder if the sx and xc seats are interchangable.

I sat on a 525XC today and I didn't think it was bad at all. There are alot of things that are different between the MX and XC machines. Suspension, width, tire size, gearing, etc... The XC is designed for trail use and has reverse, while the MX machine is setup for the track and has no reverse. I ride a machine that was designed for the track, and while putting the larger tires on helps alot, there are plenty of other things that I wish were different. Don't get me wrong, I love my LTR, but I have only had it for a year, and the clutch is almost gone. That clutch was not made to be feathered alot, and when you are trying to squeeze a 49" wide quad through a 49 1/2" trail, you end up riding the clutch alot.

I hear ya about the gearing and all. I'm use to the feeling of the TRX, it sets you right in the middle and it is very easy to move around. The KTM made me feel like it was pushing me up over the bars. MHO, it is uncomfortable.

I would personally go with the SX and put bigger wheels/tires on it.

money is an issue, and the SX is 2k+ more than the XC model.

yea i know, the main reason im wanting the XC is cash, if i could pick any quad, it would be the 505SX for sure, but its high as a cats back. in the end, the only real mods ill have done to it is SX arms and a pipe since i love a wide quad.

I understand why you would feel uncomfortable on anything but the TRX. Every other sport quad on the market feels like you are sitting high and leaning over to the handle bars. My LTR and my TRX feel completely different, but it didn't take me long to adjust. The LTR is quite comfortable to me now, I just had to get used to it. The only quads that I don't like the feel of anymore are the Raptor 660 and 700, they are just too tall.

Dirtdemon, I think we have the exact same taste in machines. I can't stand the ergos on the 660 on 700s. I rode my buddies LTR for a short time. It is pretty comfortable. I understand that when riding hard im up over the bars a lot but I don't like to be forced there. I like the feel of the TRX and the old R's that almost feel like that back is squating. Like a pre runner truck. Higher up front and the rear nice and low.

This is what I mean

S0384500.jpg

Look how low my back end is. The things frickin' hugs corners like it's on rails.

I understand completely, even though my LTR is newer, wider and easier to ride; I am still more comfortable hauling ass through corners on the R, the ass end squats nice and low and even with the little 18" tires and alot more power, the it is easier to keep the ass end behind me. Too much throttle on the LTR, and the rear end comes right around front. I think the LTR could benefit from another inch or two in the swingarm. Anyway to stay on topic, Powermadd, if you pick up that KTM, I will trade you for my LTR, it is nice and wide just the way you like.:yes::biggrin:

Georgia isn't that far, I'll be there in about 4 1/2 hours in my new car, I just need a trailer with a really big spoiler.

Ok, so I bought this scream of a deal the other day - a 94 King Quad 300 for $40.00.  It's been sitting outside with no carburetor on it for about a year.  Its rusty, missing some parts, wiring is all cut up and spliced etc.  No seat, no racks but the plastic is all there minus the headlight housing.  Anyway, who can pass up a $40.00 quad right?  I get it home and looked at the sight glass for oil level, it's about 1/2 oil and 1/2 water.  I drain it, refill it and turn the motor by hand (recoil starter is missing) and it turns over just fine.  I worked on the wiring for about an hour and got it to turn over with the electric starter and got enough of it sorted out to get a spark.  Did a quick compression test, 70 lbs.  Wet test bumped it up to 90.  Ok, so rings and cylinder washed out with water for a year, not too surprised.  I thought 'what the hell' and sprayed some starting fluid in it and it ran for about 2 seconds - enough to show  it's got life.  Since then the compression has gotten worse, I can't get enough pressure to activate the carb diaphragm, therefore no fuel pump either.  The compression is now around 60.
Anyway, my question is....is it worth it to try to get this thing going?  I tore the top end down today and the cam and one of the rockers is pretty worn.  I figured a top end job would be about $100 or so, depending on the condition of the cylinder but I'll probably have to put a cam and rockers in it as well.  Doing some research on ebay I figure I'll have to spend about $500-$700 to make the whole machine right again.  Much less just to make it run and use as-is but I won't really like it until it's right.  I don't mind doing the work, I actually enjoy it but I'm concerned about what all that water did to the rest of the internals, I can't really test it all out until I can make it run.
I know it's a basket case but I'm not into it much at all, even if I do the top end and find something else wrong I'm still not out much.  I'm leaning toward ordering the top end parts and going from there unless you can convince me otherwise - any way to check the rest of the internals without tearing it down?  I plan on flushing the oil cooler before I do another oil change, I've drained it twice now and it gets milky almost immediately just turning the starter - I suspect the oil cooler is polluted badly.

I'll get some pictures today if anyone want to see them.

      thanks!

Do any of you fine folks happen to have a rear swing arm skid plate for a 400EX you would part with at a reasonable price?  New ones are between $60 and a Hundo and that seems a bit steep.  I've kicked around the idea of fabbing one but 2nd hand OEM would be preferable.  Thoughts?  I have a belly skid plate but missing the swing arm skid plate and really don't wanna taco the brake rotor.

Hello! I picked up a YFM400 and I would love to talk shop with knowledgeable co-owners, and I'd love input about the machine from anyone here who clearly knows more than I do! Cheers from NY

So here is the newest project in the garage, a '99 400EX.  Came with full belly pan, DMC Alien exhaust with dual header, few other little fun additions.  Only down side here really is the stupid Chinese carb, but it is what it is.  Only paid $800 for it and it runs like a scalded dog.  70MPH on the top end, verified with a truck behind it and you have to fight it to keep the front wheels down through 4th.

It's been awhile since my grandpa's death. Mostly over at his house cleaning out over 40 years of junk in that basement. No really we took out over 30 bags *the big black bags* of trash,2 dryer's, and 1 washer, and didnt even dent the basement.
So I'm busy to even get on here. just letting you guys know whats up.

Hey everyone, wow it has been a long time since I have been on here i know. Here are some pictures taken from July - August. Since the end of August I have been deployed in South America and now wont be riding much since i have warrant officer school right when i return in December, enjoy the pics. The pictures on my LTR were of me racing a tomahawk, WV where i got 2nd and Rausch Creek, PA where i got 7th after crashing twice. I was in 4th when i rolled my quad, damn things are heavy after racing for an hour. the pictures of my on the banshee were just some fun riding in the coal mines somewhere NE of Hazelton, PA. It is better to go to my gallery to view the images since there is a size limit to post them here. Great to be back. Tim
