Installing new inner boot on a Honda Foreman 500?

Once you have the axle out, cut the clamp off the larger side of the boot and pull back, or take the entire boot off by cutting it. Under the joint there is a clip that you need a special tool to get off, it's a "C" clip. Once that is off, you can use a brass hammer to knock off the joint.

Install the new boot and tap the joint back on with a new clip. Fill with grease and seal the boot.

Do I need to take out the whole axle? I have the boot off, but cannot see the "C" clip, must be up in the joint/ Thanks.

What year is the Foreman? From what I can tell looking at the diagram, the snap ring (#6) is inside the edge of the outer joint housing (#7). Once that snap ring is out, you should be able to remove the half shaft with the inner part of the joint. Once the halfshaft is removed, you should be able to see the circlip(#2) on the other end of the shaft. Once you remove the circlip the inner part of the joint should slide off the half shaft. I realize that the diagram only shows the exploded view of the inboard joint and you are working on the outboard joint, but I am sure they are relatively the same on both ends.

I think the special tool that AJM boy is talking about is a pair of circlip pliers, and if you have ever tried removing a circlip without the proper tool, it can be very frustrating and sometimes painful, a pair of needle nose pliers and a flat screwdriver will work, but I would spend the money on some circlip pliers, it makes things so much easier, they aren't very expensive, and you will most likely use them again in the future. Thanks Guys for the help finally got it. You cannot remove the CV joint at all from the wheel side, it all needs to slide off from the drive side.

Can you believe that the Moose replacement boot is too large. Now I had to go back to the dealer and spend $61.00 for a boot. Thta kills me.

Where did you buy the Moose replacement? Did you look for an OEM replacement from a site like BikeBandit.com?

      On Wednesday, September 18, our ATV was stolen from in front of our house after the locks were cut. This was around 2-3:15 AM.
      We realize the likelihood of ever finding the four-wheeler again is slim to none, but we had to try and put the word out there. We have put countless hours in to restoring this Banshee.       *Update* We received a tip last night that it was possibly posted on Facebook Marketplace around 8AM yesterday morning with only pictures of the front and of the back of the ATV. The description only said: PM for more details. This came up in someone’s FB Marketplace feed that has it set for a 50 mile radius from Hartwood, VA. She also has her feed set to automatically translate everything into Spanish, so It could also possibly be posted in Spanish.

      I thought I would make a quick "How-to" on setting wheel alignment since I was flipping my tie rod ends and I was going to have to re-align the wheels anyways.
      Here's some of the tools you will need...

      1.) Start with the ATV on a smooth and level surface, like a cement garage floor or driveway.

      2.)Center up (Eyeball It) the handle bars and lock them into place with 2 ratchet straps, one on each side of handle bars. This of course prevents them from moving when your adjusting the tie-rods.

      3.) Place two Jack Stands approximately 2 feet in front of the atv even with the outside edge of the two front wheels.

      4.) Wrap a length of string all the way around the ATV and Jack Stands, Start and end at the rear hitch. Make sure the string is the same height from the ground on all 4 wheels. I like to attach a few elastic bands to both ends of the string before attaching the string to the hitch. This makes it easier to adjust the strings when moving the Jack Stands.

      4.) Break lose the inner and outer tie-rod nuts. NOTE! Make sure you use 2 wrenches, one on the nut and one on the ball joint. Damage can occur by only using one wrench.

      5.) Adjust the string by moving the Jack Stands in or out untill the string just touches both of the side surfaces of the rear tires on each side of the ATV. This will take some time to get it right but it needs to be done!

      Check manufacturers wheel alignment specifications on your specific make and model before you adjust any components.
      For this wheel alignment I'm using the Polaris Specs which seems to be a common setting.
      Polaris - The recommended toe alignment is 1/8″ to 1/4″ toe out. This is a total amount, not per wheel.
      6.) On the front rim, measure the distance from the string to the rim at the front and rear edges of the rim. The rear measurement should be 1/16″ - 1/8″ (.2 to .3 cm) more than the front measurement.


      7.) If an adjustment is necessary, Turn the tie rod itself with a wrench or your hand in small increments. It doesn't take much to move the tire a long way, so go slow. Keep re-checking your measurement's until you have a 1/16″ - 1/8″ differance to the string.

      6.) Once your satisfied that you have the correct "Toe Out" measurements you can tighten up the inner and outter tie-rod nuts on both sides. AGAIN...make sure to use 2 wrenches.
      7.) Now take your ATV for a test drive to test your adjustments. If it still pulls one way or the other, just repeat the above steps to tweek the adjustments again utill your happy.
      The whole process only takes about 15-20 min.

      I have a 1999 Sportsman  500, it was running fine, than started to lose power in the winter, I adjusted the idle screw and away I went, than a few weeks ago it died, I have found that i am flooding the engine, compression was at 70PSI and due to the compression release mech. i assume i am good as it compared to the same PSI on a 2000 sportsman 500 i have. i cannot start the atv unless i go full throttle and it starts an runs for about 30 sec than dies, again it is flooded. i ordered a new carb off ebay as i could get one for around $40. put that in same issue, i have checked the timing, (good), valves out of adjustment i adjusted to .006 still same issue, i have found the exhaust lobe and rocker arm to have some wear, i have ordered new ones, but am looking for any other input in this area as well. would the exhaust cam and rocker arm cause the engine to flood? i have used a bore scope and the piston liner has good cross hatching still? any input would be great.
