1997 Yamaha Warrior reverse no longer working??

Recommended Posts

I just got another head. I had it running like a charm. It was idling then I heard a LOUD PING then it died. I forgot to tighten the timing sprocket cam bolt. The pin came out and it broke the end of the cam. I replaced the cam put the head back on. No compression. I took it back off to find the intake valve got bent. Had that replaced. Put it back together and running. I had to take the metal from the cam out of the motor. I took the cover off and retrieved the metal pieces. NOW my reverse no longer works. It almost seems electrical. I don't think I moved or touched anything when i took the metal out of the motor????:aargh:

Thank you! Could this be mechanical and not electrical? It sems more electrical because as soon as I start to move it into reverse it dies like I shut off the quad.??? It used to work before I replaced the head and pulled out the metal from the broken cam.

Thanks for everything.

Sounds electrical to me, could have something to do with the rev limiter malfuntioning, or it could be a switch like Ajmboy said. Check the wiring too, you could have damaged the insulation on a wire and you may have a short somewhere.

Your Reverse switch (located on the reverse hand shifter ) is bad or disconnected. i.ve fixed lots of these. This happens to many ,many warriors.Try disconnecting the wires coming from the reverse switch (l/h lower side)and the wire coming from the reverse lever switch (r/h upper) and grounding them to the frame. this will ensure the start cut out relay is working or just put the relay in your hand and feel it activate as the motor is cranking.

I posted earlier looking for a wiring diagram, but maybe someone can help me with the problem if they’ve had it before.

The quad Will start and idle ok, when I open the throttle it will rev all the way up until WOT and then it dies back down to idle, and if I keep the throttle wide open it will rev back up. It will do this over and over and over.

I replaced the carb, (twice), Rectifier, battery, and spark plug.  The Stator ohmed out to the proper specs from dinli.  The other issue i can see is I’m not getting 12v on the choke circuit. The lights don’t work either.

possible bad key switch? Maybe the new rectifier is bad? All the contacts on the key switch also ohm out properly
comprsssion is up to 125 psi and spark is there.

      Reed valves look great.....

im at a loss. Any trouble shooting advice would be appreciated.

Neighbor dropped off his 2010 Ranger 400 HO. Said it was missing and backfiring. I replaced the plug as it was carboned up (kids use the side x side for chores and it is only idled around yard) Unit ran great, sent back home and it ran great for about 5 hours of run time and then it wouldn't start. He brought it back and I changed the plug again and it would start but would not run great. Pull plug and it was really wet. I suspect the carb needs cleaning and that is the direction I plan on going unless someone else knows anything about these units. ( I have never worked on one of these).
If you know of something else I should check let me know.
Also I am looking for a service manual for this unit.
      Thanks

I had to adjust the valves on this 500 (and  few other things) and I'm trying to get the cam timing right, and something is really out-of-whack here. It seems anyway. When I line up the dots like the service manual describes, the lobes on the 2 cams are in almost in the same position. According to the manual (and a youtube vid or 2) the lobes should be at aproximatley 10 oclock on the int and 2 oclock on the exhaust. These are nowhere near that. There must be a woodruff type key on the sprockets. I wonder if those are sheared off? Thanks for any input!

Hi everyone! I'm from New Zealand, and doing up a Suzuki Lt50 for the kids. This is the first bike I've ever worked on, and it's currently not running. Hoping that both Google and this forum will get me through! Haha

I have recently rebuilt my Yamaha warrior 350 engine and when I got it all back together with no “spare parts” i went to start it and realized it’s in reverse. I went to put it in drive and the shifter won’t budge, I took the linkage off and tried to use vise grips but it won’t budge at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m hoping it’s not something internal!
