should i buy a $500 polaris predator 500?

some man that lives by me is selling an 03 polaris predator 500 that needs work he said it needs the carburator rebuilt , the ignition swich , and the stator cover is it worth it if hes asking $500 bucks for it i saw it today and is kinda rough seat is sun faded has some cracked fairings and missing one headlight should i buy and what should i look for when buying it how much is it going to take me to get it running?

i would not recommend it at all.. unless you are mechanically inclined... but thats a big if still...most likely the bike has bigger problems the guy is not telling you about....TO GOOD TO BE TRUE kind of comes into play here

thanks that is what i thought to he had the carb out of bike like if it was really the carb but thanks sir now my other question is someone has a 1992 suzuki 230 fourwheeler runs great but the brake master cylinder is broken is it a good buy?

depends how much he is asking for it...there are a couple people on here with 230 suzukis...they seem like great machines..look good to...brake master cylinder is not to bad you can probably find one on ebay

that pretty good...hmm any weird sounds or anything on it that seems out of place or look odd? Does it shift through gears fairly easily?

Thanks I also found another atv for sale 1990 plaris trailboss needs seat recovered front wheels don't hold air but it starts but didn't stay running he also said it has really old gas could this be an easy carb fix?

thats something that will be a headache....might be easy fix...but 9 times out of 10 its not going to be easy especially with it being a 1990...wouldnt recommend it unless you know someone who is good with engines so they can check it out...

If you are looking for a quad for $500 or less, most all you will find is basket cases like that or bikes without titles. It's not that there aren't bargains out there, but most of these machines will need work and $$$ to make them right. You need to take a good look at these machines to determine if it is worth the trouble. Look at the motor oil, check for evidence of broken internals like metal pieces and shavings and see if the oil has water in it. It is likely that many of these machines will not run when you buy them, but you will want to see how the motor turns, if it does not roll over freely, there are real problems inside. Wiggle the bike around and literally kick the tires to check the condition of the bearings throughout the machine. Will it need brakes, tires, cables? All of these things add up quick. Like Outlander said, if you aren't good with a wrench, you may want to pass on the basket cases and save your money until you can afford a decent machine. Tax time is right around the corner, maybe that will help you, I know I have most of mine already spent.:yes::wink::yes:

Welcome to QUADCRAZY! I agree with Outlander's comments and Dirt Demon...save your money and buy something that is not a basket case.

I guess most 14 year olds won't be getting a tax return, so maybe you should hit your parents up when they get theirs. Do some real serious brown nosing over the next couple weeks.:wink:

      Working on a bayou 220 that has been ran extremely hard it's whole life. Literally had almost an inch thick dirt/oil covering the motor. Yeah that bad. Surprisingly it runs though. I cleaned the carb and tank multiple times. They're clean enough to eat off of. Readjusted valve lash and set timing. Was about 3 teeth off. It cranks good and runs good only problem is I have to cover the carb intake basically choking the hell out of it for it to start. The com choke works fine. It does this each time I start it regardless of temperature both ambient or motor. Wth? Compression is at 115psi I get 130s if I put a little oil in the piston chamber. Please help. Thanks

      Hi, I'm new to ATV/UTV's and am looking for any advice that would help to repair my 2018 Ranger 500.  I got it from an insurance auction and have never owned one before.
      It looks like it was sunk deep.  Found rocks and sand in the roof, milky oil in the air filter box, water in the fuse box, etc.
      So far, I've cleaned the air box out, vacuumed most of the rocks and sand, checked the engine, trans and diff casings for cracks/leaks.
      The battery would not charge while connected so I know there is some short somewhere...probably the wet fuse box.
       
      I plan on drying out the fuse box and all connectors with a hairdryer tomorrow, check the fuses, remove/dry out the ECM and disassemble/clean the air intake.  Then install the battery and see if i can get it to key on and see what kind of lights I get.
      Need to know what to expect with the engine/trans...

      Good morning everybody 
      I’ll be looking to get a cover for my Polaris sportsman touring that can be used while I take my atv to the lake for ice fishing. 
      min using an open flat trailer and 
      I want to protect it from the road salt 
      I know Polaris makes a nice cover but it’s kind of on the expensive side. I’ve seen some covers on amazon and eBay but was wondering if anybody has any suggestions

      I've never done this before but after reading a few thread I decided to check my valves for the first time and to my surprise it was much easier than I thought.
      My bike is a 2005 Sp 500 HO.
      I first pulled the seat and the right side panel off, and that's it! It wasn't too bad to get at.
      Next I pulled the spark plug out and removed both the head cover ( 8-8mm bolts)

      then the side cam cover (5-8mm bolts).

      Also remove the plug in the recoil cover (14mm bolt) to see the timming marks.

      Next I turned the engine over with the pull cord untill it was at TDC of the compression stroke.
      The best was to tell that your at TDC of the compression stroke is to rotate the engine until the
      timing marks are parallel to rocker cover gasket surface.
      The cam sprocket locating pin will be facing upward directly in line with the crankshaft to camshaft center line.
      Now fine adjust by looking into the timing hole in the recoil cover and line up the upside down "T" on
      the flywheel into the center of the hole.

      Now using a feeler gauge, slide the .006" (.15mm)blade between the top of the valve and the bottom of the adjuster and adjust accordingly

      To adjust, Loosen the locknut (10mm) and check clearance with a feeler guage. Clearance should be .006" (.15mm) for both, intake and exhaust valves. Turn the adjuster with a stubby flat blade screwdriver untill the proper clearance is achieved then tighten the locknut (5.8-7.2 ft. lbs) while holding the adjuster in place with the screwdriver. Re-check the clearance with the feeler guage one last time and re-assemble the covers (72 in.lbs) and plugs.
      The only thing that i noticed was that I had to clean and silicone the side cam cover other than that I found the whole process rather simple.
      I'd give it a 4 out of 10 on the skill level scale.

      i have a 1993 timberwolf yamaha and the compression is good and lights work but for some reason the electricity is not going to the spark plug(s)! i got a friend to check it out and they said its no use but im not giving up! please help with this!

      I have a 1988 300 Honda FourTrax, All wheel drive.
      My brother and I were fixing up this quad. We put a brand new battery and fuses in and it was running fine until we put the quad into reverse. As soon as it was put into reverse all of the electrical cut out and power wasn't making it to the head unit anymore and both of the brand new fuses popped. We figured there might have been a short from the starter or solenoids, but they are all working properly. At this point we don't know where to start looking for where the short could be. I'm just wondering if anybody has had the same issue or knows of similar issues that could cause these electrical shorts?
