1996 Yamaha Warrior 350 will not shift

Recommended Posts

 I was riding the other day. Got stuck in a mud hole. Now it won't move when shifted into gears. It will move slow in reverse, very slow. Any thoughts to this problem. Runs good just won't go when put into gear.

I checked my cable and it is fine. When it is not started it will stay in gear. Just when running it will not go. I can pull the clutch in and it will roll. But with it running it will not go forward but the reverse does engage and it will go backwards

than , it sounds like that reverse linkage has gotten bent , so it"s not going far enough to let that little fork inside the trans. move. if you disconnect that linkage close to the trans. to see if that part that goes into the trans can be moved a little farther . keep me posted mike

I have taken the clutch case off and every thing looks fine. but it does sound like you are right Mike. I am gonna try that in the morning. its to dark and I keep burning my finger on the exhaust.

With the engine off and the machine in gear, will it roll at all? Is there any noise when you put it in gear and let out the clutch with the engine running? When it is in reverse, you say in moves but slowly, does it seem like the clutch is slipping? A slipping clutch is what I first thought. It could be the clutch push rod haning up, the engagement lever could be bent or damaged.

With the engine is off I have to hold the clutch in to move it. It will go in reverse perfect, moves fast in reverse. it just moves like it is stuck in idle when it is in gear. I can put the rpms up and it still just goes like I am in an idle. I took the clutch case off. every thing looks fine. Changed the oil. It started doing this after I got stuck in the mudd. I am going to try to adjust the reverse rod to see if some thing happened with that. I do not know what else it could be.

I tried the reverse rod. Took it off, moved it as far back as possible and it still moves like it is in an idle. But reverse is fine. I can be like a clown and ride backwards. I am confused.

My best guess is that you have a stripped gear on one of the gear shafts. If so, you will need to split the cases to fix it.

with engine runing did you try all the gears or just first ? try it in second ant third to see what you get.

if it still does it in the higher gears, it sounds like you may have sheared a little key that lets that reverse gear slide back and forth between foreward and reverse. what your feeling when you have to pull the clutch in to push it [engine not running] is, it must still in reverse, that slider gear is not moving, even though you think is , when that key gets sheared off ,it leaves a bur ,or lets say it is just bent or deformed in some way, you may still be able to move the linkage but the gear is stuck. i think i would still look for an easier solution, but may try to move that little gear from the outside some how , before get into a complete teardown. good luck , let me hear from you................mike,pontiacjim

 Ok, I am not sure if this is the problem. I took my clutch out and went to the atv shop and told them what was going on. After looking at the plates one of them had no grit stuff on them. While taking them out I broke one of the threaded things on the main preasure plate, nice $41.31 spent for that. Then I ended up breaking one of the fins off the primary Drive gear, $93.16 wasted on that. but I did only spend $127.70 on the rest of the clutch kit. Boy I hope this does the trick.

I would like to thank everyone that has posted with help. I am putting it in the shop for new valves and I am also going to have a new piston and rings put in it. After that is all done and the frame gets powder coated this thing is going to go up for sale with my Jeep. Thanks again for all the advice:wink:

after all the gear searching I came to the conclusion to put a new clutch in. It is back in the Mud. Thanks for all the pointers. It totally feels much better with the new clutch.

Good to hear, a bit strange though that it wouldn't slip in reverse, just forward gears. Anyway, have fun while you still have it.

Hi Any thoughts on this issue with my 1996 350cc 4x4 Big Bear would be very much appreciated. The bike is stuck in reverse gear. No ammount of persuasion will free it. Its currently sat in the garage where I am hoping once its cooled down it may come free. I cannot get it back into neutral and really unsure where to begin looking to rectify.

Any thoughts guys?

Hi again - further to this issue ... I let the bike cool down for around 90 minutes went back out to it, and hey presto, she clicked into neutral like there had never been a problem. Still like to hear your thoughts as to what is going on though.

Hi, I’m a 16 year old that is wanting to get more into vehicle and mechanic repair. My dad has an old ‘96 Timberwolf that he doesn’t remember running since I was born. I want to get it running again as a memory for him and to help us be able to hunt together, and of course so I can learn how engines work more than the little information I know now. I’ve pulled the carburetor and gas tank off of it, and the carburetor is getting cleaned by a friend. I can post photos of the condition it’s in later, I’m just curious where I should start in my journey to get it running again. The power switch is broken off of the handlebar, so I am looking into fixing it, along with the pull cord. I’m afraid the engine is seized up, and I’m curious to hear any input anyone has. Thank you all.

Hi, i'm looking for some help and advice with my arctic cat quad, its the first of the arctic cat quads as far as i know, manufactured in 1996 the bearcat 454. i have owned the quad for about 10 years now but just recently it has developed a problem with reverse gear, reverse wont engage any more like it used to 😕 the cable and handle is free but there is no movement the gearbox end, can anyone give me a heads up of what is involved to fix this? 🤔
If anyone has a service/repair manual available for it as well that would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

The Hop-Up: You may be saying to yourself, “that’s a chick bike,” and you’re right. But honestly, it’s so much more than that. It’s one badass bike. http://www.quadmagazine.com/quad/features/article/0,24942,1587044,00.html

I just got a 1991 Yamaha Moto 4 for my son and I am looking for a service repair manual. I know that the timing chain needs replaced.
