2005 Artic Cat 500 cooling fan question

Recommended Posts

I was running cat 500 at low speeds for about 25 minutes today, i mean very low 3-5mph then to zero back to 5 so on so on, and when I parked my radiator was bubblin over a bit and steaming with a little cooloant leaking from somewhere but not much. My question is about cooloing fan, i never hear it engage or running. My Honda you have to leave the key on for a few minutes to let the fan run before shutting down, but my Cat i cant find anything in owner man. except "keep it free of debris with hose". How do I know if cooling fan is operating properly, should i hear it after shutting down engine. Its a 2005 but i only have 252 miles on it. Any info would be of help and thank you to everyone for your help with carb and fuel overflow, there was dirt in carb, took apart and cleaned myself w/no prob now works great, even though i did not install in line fuel filter. Where do I get one? Thanks again!!

A dealer will be able to get you the fuel filter. As far as the cooling fan goes, it sounds to me like it isn't working and when you aren't riding fast enough to get a good breeze going over the radiator, it is going to overheat. Check the wiring, and any fuses. Sit there physically watch the fan while the machine is warm and running, see if it comes on at all. You may have a faulty temp. sensor or fan relay. You might try running power straight to the fan from the battery to make sure the fan itself works.

He is right, if you shut off the engine and then leave the key in the on position, the fan should still run until the temperature drops. Good possibility is some crud got in stopping the fan and blowing the fuse.

Don't forget to check your thermostat. It is easy to remove and place in hot water to see if it opens. You can also check the temp of your radiator (non contact thermometer). If the radiator is not getting hot the fan sensor will never tell the fan to come on.

Did you hook the fan up to 12v yet and see if it works? If the fan is broke you can get a replacement from any parts place for about $50.

2001 Honda foreman 450s manual shift. i can shift through the gears when the ATV is off, but when I turn it on, I can shift into first, but I cannot shift to second or even back to neutral. Same with reverse. I can get it into reverse but cannot shift out. If i turn it off it will shift back fine, any idea? I just bought this and fear I got screwed over.

I have a 98 Polaris Magnum 425. Runs GREAT for 10 minutes then starts to load up (sounds rich) and looses power. Final;ly just stalls out on idle. If it sits 20 minutes will run again.

replaced fuel, added fuel treatment (seafoam), Replaced plug (carbon fouled), plug wires, air and fuel filter, checked all fuel and vac hoses, REPLACED carb with new. Still no good. Just ordered a coil, not sure if that will help
Note: both the new and old carb only had the idel adjuster screw - cant find the jet adjustments or air/fuel mix screws so I cannot say how they are set.

Looking for ideas short of spending big $$ on Polaris service

Hello everyone, I’m new to this forum. I have a 98 king quad 300, I cannot get it to run right. It will start up and run for a little bit but then it starts sputtering when you give it throttle. It appears to me that it is getting to much fuel.
this is what I have done to it: new carburetor, new fuel filter, adjusted the valves.

Was using the quad the other day to shuttle wood from my pickup to my wood pile.  When the job was done I turned off the Quad and heard a bit of a racket from the front end.  When I got down underneath the sound seemed to be coming from the fan housing.  fan was moving in spurts and not quickly... much like a computer case fan that's had it's day.  What I know.
Temp sensor is ok, as the fan tries to activate fan is getting some voltage as it is attempting to spin.  When I first bought it used I tested the fan direct to battery and it was fine. The fan was working ok even not direct wired as I went on a couple of rides and when stopped and idling the fan did run Seems to be free spinning with my finger read up in the manual and they require me to drop the rad.  now I'm not opposed to that as the rad has some damaged areas I want to try and straighten out.  But if I can get the fan working without, I can leave the rad as it is until next year.
Fan assembly is about 300 bills, any work arounds or alternatives?  I even thought large computer case brushless fan.  smaller ones are about $7 larger ones better quality probably far below the 300.  They run standard 12v DC.
Anything I should be doing before dropping the rad... other than check for obstructions even though it seems to spin, and trying to hardwire it to the battery again for a test to see if it acts the same?
