need help decidin to get a 400 or 450

I've rode a honda 250ex for about 3 years, and am now ready to upgrade, but cant decide if i want a 400 or 450 - i want a 400 because it has reverse, but want the 450 because from what i've been told 450's in general are just built better, like better suspension, wont tip over in turns as much cuz they are wider and not as tall (correct me if im wrong - this is all stuff i've been told) and other stuff. i dont drag race, so im not to concerned about speed, i just like to ride in the woods, climbin hills, and jumpin. Another reason im leanin toward a 450 is because i want to have a recluse clutch and i dont think they make recluse clutches for 400's nemore. i would really appreciate ne opinions on what i should choose, thanks :)

i think you should see if maybe u could find someone that owns what u are looking for and see if they would let u take it for a spin to see if that model is right for you,the reverse is nice,but so is the suspension,or get the bike with reverse and upgrade the suspension....it looks like u are kind or pron to hondas,but i also think that a raptor may be more along the lines of what u are looking for...good luck with ur choice

definitely try to do what mike said and try to test ride what you want. But choosing between a 400 or a 450 is a tough choice. One thing to consider is most of the 450s are now fuel injected except for the honda. This way if you change in elevation you don't have to mess with the carb just hop on and ride. The kawie 450 does have reverse and is known as a good trail/woods quad and I am not saying that just cause I own one. But if you decide to put the big 3 (pipe, intake, and fuel controller) on it you most likely need to take it to a dyno to get it mapped to make it run at its full potential instead of just changing a jet in the carb. The Honda 400ex is still consider one of the best trail sport quads and even with the new body style on the honda the engine and tranny on those have not changed through out the years, and you can find an abundant of aftermarket parts for them.

EFI is just a pain in the but. plus Carb's perform better.

Definitely test ride. I know that when I rode a 400 I was always wanting more speed.

If your looking for the best durable quad 400ex is the ticket:yes: 450`s are alittle more maintance involved to keep them running and $$$$

If power is not a issue go with teh Honda 400ex it is proven to be a great quad and very reliable but if you want a little more power go with a 450 the Kwai KFX450 has reverse also.

I think the Kawi 450 would be a good choice, it is a good trail machine, and it has reverse like you want. Don't be afraid of the FI too much, it isn't a pain in the butt unless something goes wrong with it. I think Bot is just jealous because he still has to re-jet.:wink: My LT-R's FI system has been running trouble free for over 3 years now, however, if something were to go wrong with it, it can be difficult to figure out, and more expensive to fix than a carb. One machine that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is the LTZ 400, it is a little bit more modern and better performing than the 400EX IMO, more powerful motor, better suspension. It is a good machine too. The KFX 400 and Artic cat DVX 400 are clones of the LTZ and also would be worth looking at. I think one of the most important things to consider when you buy a new machine is how comfortable you are on it. BTW, did how is the arm doing?, I assume you have that cast off by now.

I found a great deal on a kfx 450, goin to look at it 2mrw Thanks everyone

The only thing that I would say to be aware of with the kawie 450 is the stock ecu is junk and unless stored in neutral the battery will drain and have starting issues. You'll just be sitting there cranking a while. Save up the $300 and get a ProCom ecu that way you'll solve the starting and battery issue. Plus if you decide to add a pipe or intake later all you do is turn the dial on it and away you go no need for the dyno.

      So just as a general FYI, it might be good to check replacement parts before installing.  If possible, check clearances with a micrometer before going through the trouble of assembly.  I say this as I bought a new driveshaft yoke for a Kodiak because the ujoint dropped a cap and got the yoke in a bind...blowing the yoke and middle drive gear to shreds.  So I replaced the middle drive gear and bought a new yoke and ujoint kit from Caltric.  Caltric is usually pretty solid replacement parts.  The new yoke however was a good 4mm too narrow for inside lock ujoint caps.  Disappointing since it came as a kit from Caltric.
      Ended up taking an angle grinder to the new yoke and thinning material off to get it to the needed 41.25mm opening size.  Sucks having to disassemble everything again and start over but my fault for trusting replacement parts.  Nearly 40 years of turning wrenches and I made a rookie mistake.

      Well im at it again, took about an hour drive Saturday and made a deal on this old honda. 
      Might be restorable. Tires pretty dry rotted, mastercylinder broken glass and probably full of water. 
      Handed me the carb he rebuilt (oh no) He said ran about 6 months ago but when we pushed out of his
      field there was a tree growning through it. See pic.  Missing some parts, also missing the intake. Motor is not
      locked up, Has piece of plastic crammed in the head since no carb there for months. Brake cables bad, etc. Thats
      part of the fun. Im sure I will be posting some questions later for you all. Stay tuned Az.

      I likely just kissed $200 goodbye buying a Honda 250 this AM from Craiglist.  We'll see.
      - VIN number is off the front frame; one VIN site calls it a 2008 Honda 250 TRX - this baby ain't a 2008; other VIN sites list the VIN as invalid; might be that the owner (a shady dude from a shadier side of my home town) put a 2008 front end on it?  No idea.  
      - a HUGE hint (hint #1) would've been that there's no key to start the machine - gotta use a screwdriver.  I'll likely be visited by police sometime in the near future.
      - owner acquired from another man - owner showed me video of him riding it this summer on a major interstate while very drunk (hint #2) - the machine sounded good in the video
      - no front headlight; owner said machine has new carb - looks Chinese - he didn't have original carb; air intake box is wide open - no long plastic connection sleeve leading into air box like on my 99 king quad; no visible oil leaks; oil is dark; air filter clean; decent plastic; no front right brake apparatus; left brake handle very loose and rear brake doesn't work
      - battery at this point is good; manipulate the ignition switch w/ screw driver and the green neutral light shines (this has since stopped working)
      - it's a kick start machine: when I kicked it down (hint #3), the compression sounded normal, almost "tight"  but at the end of the cycle, there was some awful grinding noise coming from what sounded like either inside the engine or the starter area; I let it settle, kicked it again, same noise heard at the end of cycle; owner said it likely needs a new starter - I only hope it's this simple
      pictures attached - the throttle cable / zip tie pic is my favorite - but it works!  it was CRAZY dirty prior to pressure washing - and the water in air box is likely secondary to the power wash - no water was in it when purchased
      gotta few things to complete on the king quad - will be changing motor/gear oil in honda and getting new oil filter over time - talk soon - hope y'all had a great Christmas

      I have a 99 Kodiak 400 4X4 that I picked up for $300.  The previous owner had modified the foot shifter by welding a piece of rebar to it so he could hand shift while plowing.  As you can imagine, the allows for much more torque on the shifter than it was designed to have, and he broke the stopper off of the the shift mechanism.  No big deal, I ordered the part and put it back together, went through the carburetor and off we go, it runs pretty good.  
      The first thing I noticed is that when I put the shifter all the way down it goes into reverse, I'm supposed to twist a knob to get it to reverse but this seems to be disabled.  Also, once in reverse, it's a bugger to get back out.  I have to hold the shifter up, then quickly back down and up again to get it to come out.  All forward gears work fine, clutch is tight, no problems.
      The reverse cable and lever are in tact and seem to move freely.  
      My question is this:  What does one normally have to do to get this thing into reverse?  I assume put it in neutral, twist the knob, kick the shifter down.  Does the brake need to be applied?  I'm not sure what's going on here, I suspect it's been 'modified' as it goes into reverse without the proper precautions, just not sure if the mods were external on internal.

      When it is  cold outside, say 35 deg F and colder, it is very difficult to shift to Reverse from neutral.  Engine temp doesn't have an effect.  I apply the brakes hard with the hand lever and the foot pedal.  In another post I read that high idle can affect shifting when the engine temp is warm. 
      I will try it with lower idle speed once I find the screw.  In the interim, can you tell me if there is some sort of adjustment for the shifter?

      I was riding my 400ex one day and when i shut it off to put it in the garage i tried to start it put again to drive it into the garge and it wouldnt start.I put a compression tester on it and its like 30 psi with out throttle and 0 psi WITH THROTTLE.
      when i put my finger over the hole it fell likes its pulling my finger in more then its pushing it out 
       
      Has good spark.When i took it into the shop the said it had 1oz of oil in it and a tiny pit of metal shaving(TINY BIT LIKE 30 flakes)
      When i try to pull start (push start/roll start) it made a not normal sound  and wouldnt stay running.
      If my bottom end is blow why would it still turn over fine,
      Are my valves siezed or not working properly 
      or is my timing off causeing valves to not open in correct order with fire 
      PLEASE HELP all help is appreciated

      Some times I get spark some times not can ride then it just dies and wont get spark it has new cdi box and stator but I don't know if it has the pickup coil I'm at a loss
