Engines and transmissions are generally very reliable. As Gw says, wiring and electronics are probably the commonest breakdown fault. The biggest maintenance issues seem to be the drive line, steering, wheel bearings  and brakes. Universal joints, wheel bearings and brake pads/shoes I have probably worked on more than everything else, including the routine inspection and adjust stuff.

I've got a manual that says it does both models, the Bb and the kodiak.

It's best to get the full model designation, like Yfm400As..

Look here.. https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/atv/2004

There are always lots of differences.. Small differences but they become critical when you are working with the electricals in particular, or carbs..

I have that manual also, that does both, but it reality there are quite a few differences, a lot of the engine parts are interchangeable and both have basically the same engine but the Kodiak is water cooled, big bear is not, the Kodiaks wiring is a little different some of it is close but the CDIs are different.

Thanks,

I had that site bookmarked already with the nice exploded views of everything.

Well, so much for a quick look! I am wrong, it is air cooled with a oil cooler and a fan. It looked like a radiator and fan. This quad is covered in mud. It really needs a serious clean up.  I have not found the model decal yet. It also is a five speed with high, low, and reverse. Sorry about that.
