1996 Suzuki King Quad 300 - Resurrection, help needed..

Recommended Posts

I bought a semi-running 96 king quad 300, it had multiple fuel issues. It's beat up, dirty, and old, but that doesn't matter since it's only going to be dragging dead snowmobiles from trailers to my shop to repair them and put up trail signs for the club.

When I bought it, it would run for about 15 or 20 seconds then quit, no matter what was done to keep it alive. A quick look at the guy's house showed that the choke had come off of the carb, all the vacuum and breather lines were off of it, and the original mechanical fuel pump had been replaced with an electric one that was activated by a switch so you had to turn it on and off.

At home, I discovered that the cob job wiring for the fuel pump was not connecting to the battery any longer, and the switch wasn't actually turning the pump on. Reconnecting the wire to the harness, it would now run and stay running, albeit poorly because of the choke and vacuum lines being off.

Go buy the parts, lube up the frozen choke cable, install the choke, and give the carb a quick cleaning.

Guess where all the hoses go, since they weren't connected and I cannot find a manual for it. Ok at this point I figure I can make educated guesses since I know the difference between the vacuum ports and bowl vents. (i've been wrenching on stuff since I was a kid, but never owned a quad)

Try several different combination, some will rev through all ranges but quickly flood the engine at low rpm, others will give it a good idle but have a horrendous bog getting out of the low RPM range.

I found a 99 manual, but it doesn't give hose routing. It said the turn the air jet 2 5/8 turns out, and i found that the carb is at 5 turns out.

Turn that in to the spec, and it now runs like total crap.

Oh, and along the way I found that the petcock is leaking so that hose is now attached to the bowl vent.

I grabbed a fuel pump from my sled, and hooked that up to replace the electric one that was butchered on there, and used the small white vacuum port from the carb as a pulse line. That works just fine I have plenty of fuel.

It seems to run best with the other vacuum line wide open.

Thoughts?

Does someone know of a place I can download a manual or have a hose routing diagram they can upload and correct carb specs for the year?

Thanks,

I looked and I only have a newer king quad manual. You might just want to find a suzuki atv dealer and see if they can fax/print you a vacuum diagram. I'm not sure if the clymer manual has a vacuum diagram:

Clymer Suzuki LT-4WD, LT-F4WDX and LT-F250 1987-1998

Here's another to try, but who knows on this..

Suzuki Quad Runner 250 / King Quad 280 service manual repair 1987-1998 - Download Technical

That's a tough one, but a nice quad. I'm assuming it has those fancy shift levers...

The manual offered above wasn't correct, so I'm still on the hunt.

yes and i'm very sorry about the mix up, i thought i had it and it was the 300 bayou for that year. that king quad manual has got to be the hardest one to find on the net, but i'm not giving up !!!

I have a 2004 Polaris Trail Boss 330 and I want to eventually fix it up if possible, but the thing is the transmission or Gearbox that allows you to shift into forward and reverse and such isn't connect to the engine at all, it isn't even bolted into the frame. Anyways the Secondary Driven clutch is missing. The ignition was busted so I switched it out and tried to hook up power to it and the lights wouldn't light up and it wouldn't try to let me start it with the electric starter.

So I bridged the connectors on the starter solenoid and it cranks the motor. I was wondering if anyone knew why the dash lights don't work or any of the buttons. I did find a cable disconnected I have a picture of maybe someone can tell me what it's supposed to be connected to. It has 3 wires going to the connect Green Purple Red. I'll enclose a picture of it and where it is connected on the wiring harness.

Unfortunately this weekend we waived goodbye to the 99 400ex.  Ported and polished head, DMC Alien exhaust with dual header, an absolute unit that would run 70 on the top end.  Fortunately though the 400ex left in exchange for a fairly cherry 98 Honda 300..the holy grail of reliability in a mud and water toy.  Previous owner added the snorkels and it was a decent job.  Put some 25" swamp witches on it, now it just needs 1" spacers, 2" bracket lift, couple of pinion seals and a pound or two of dielectric grease.  Hate to let the 400ex go as it was a gem, but it's hard to pass on a cherry 300.  These things are just so dang reliable and easy to work on.

1987 YFM350FWTB 350 4x4 Big Bear when going uphill will sometimes act like the clutch realeases then re-engauge all at once.
Seems to maybe be little more often if the engine is at about 1/2 throttle instead of at lower rpms.
I have the Factory Service manual and checked the external clutch adjustment screw as ok and the H/L/reverse shifter lever linkage as adjusted correctly. It appears to be maybe a internal (inside the case) clutch issue or ??
This is the type Big Bear that has the manual shift lever on the left front fender and has the manual foot shifter lever with 5 speeds forward.
Can someone tell me how the primary and secondary clutch operates?
I assume one is mechanical and one is centrifugal. (what I'm asking is one clutch for the higher rpms and one for the lower rpms or ???. (the clutch appears to only momentarily release at the higher rpms is why I ask. The cycle has about 3000 miles of low speed through the brush hunting and has been well maintained, oil changed, etc and no deep water or mud useage.
Anyone been into a similar issue with the big Bear ATV????

Hi, I’m a 16 year old that is wanting to get more into vehicle and mechanic repair. My dad has an old ‘96 Timberwolf that he doesn’t remember running since I was born. I want to get it running again as a memory for him and to help us be able to hunt together, and of course so I can learn how engines work more than the little information I know now. I’ve pulled the carburetor and gas tank off of it, and the carburetor is getting cleaned by a friend. I can post photos of the condition it’s in later, I’m just curious where I should start in my journey to get it running again. The power switch is broken off of the handlebar, so I am looking into fixing it, along with the pull cord. I’m afraid the engine is seized up, and I’m curious to hear any input anyone has. Thank you all.

Hi, i'm looking for some help and advice with my arctic cat quad, its the first of the arctic cat quads as far as i know, manufactured in 1996 the bearcat 454. i have owned the quad for about 10 years now but just recently it has developed a problem with reverse gear, reverse wont engage any more like it used to 😕 the cable and handle is free but there is no movement the gearbox end, can anyone give me a heads up of what is involved to fix this? 🤔
If anyone has a service/repair manual available for it as well that would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

Feul pump went out. Replaced. At times quad cuts out like its not getting gas. Saw article on new pump needs to be calibrated. Told how to go into a service mode. Does not tell how to calibrate after going into mode. Can anyone shed light on this procedure.
