How do I stop a clutch from dragging

I just bought a 2002 sportrax 400ex, it has a newer clutch from a dealer along with some new internal parts, as well as new lever and cable, When i got it it was hardly dragging, if you jacked it up then put it in gear the rear tires would slowly turn with the clutch pullled in. I tried to adjust the new cable both ways but now it is worse. It shifts hard and with the clutch pulled in with out it running you can hardly turn the rear tires with it in gear?

What adjustments can be made? What could be wrong with it?

There are a few things that can make your clutch act funny.

#1) Does your clutch have a difficult time disengaging?

It could be............

a) The clutch lever may be damaged.

b) The cable may need oiled. You can purchase a cable oiling kit from a bike shop.

c) The clutch basket may have "worn spots" on it where the clutch plates come in contact with it. A temporary fix for this is to remove the basket and file smooth the spots where the grooves are. This will only last a short while. you must replace the basket.

#2) Clutch grabs slightly at idle

a) Out of adjustment

b) Warped clutch plates.

c) Oil / trans fluid is to heavy.

#3) Clutch slips

a) Out of adjustment

b)Worn / damaged clutch plates

c) Weak clutch springs

It sounds to me like it's an adjustment issue like MWKE said. With something like that if nothng works, I would take it apart and reinstall making sure the parts are correct by taking a ride to the dealer and matching them up.

I took the clutch apart, the discs seem to be warped, I put them on a flat surface and I can place a feeler gauge under them so I ordered new plates for it. And hopefully that will do it.

if your slipping ,did u put the metal plates rough side towrds the motor? Is the basket grooved if so replace it, or sand it down if u sand down it wont last long so replace at once!! did u adjust the prussure plate bolt? the clutch arm on the motor should be facing the pointer on the motor casing above the sprocket . Push the clutch arm in with your hand untill it gets stiff if the arm faces the pointer it's good, if not adjust the bolt on the prussure plate untill it dose. Turn the bolt out to braing the arm in, turn the bolt in to braing the arm out. Make sure u leave a little slack in the clutch cable so the clutch fully disages.and dont froget if u buy a new set of clutch disks to put the clutch disks in oil 3or 4 hours before u use the clutch disks. well man do this and u will be riding again see u later.

      It will go into neutral, 1st, 2nd, and reverse but nothing after 2nd gear. The shifter moves freely going up completely nothing but when you shift down it works. I’m not sure if it’s tranny issue worth messing with or if I should just buy a new one.  Overall besides that the thing runs like new.

      I have a 1991 Big Bear 4x4   Shifter on top. Any one know if a  1994 Big Bear 4x4 Shifter on motor can be swapped

      I need some help y’all, I bought a 450r, 2005 and I was riding it and unfortunately got stuck, I had no clutch control at all, I put it in gear and release the clutch, it doesn’t go anywhere, I select through all gears and it won’t move, i can rev it out, I just bought a clutch kit, but I am sorta new to this whole scene of race quads, I always had a 4x4, so any help will be much appreciated thanks.

      Hello! This is my first bike with a cvt it's a 19 Outlander 850 xmr. I use the 30" cryptid tires that come with the bike during hunting season since I hunt in a louisiana swamp and I have some 27" interco reptiles during the summer trail rides. So this past hunting season I got stuck and squealed the belt do i looking at cluch kits /adjustments to help with the low end but I dont want to mess with my summer riding so I'm looking for advice

      I am trying to put a 1994 Suzuki 250 quadrunner back into service. I have it up and running like new but need to replace the plastics as they are brittle and crumbling due to age and sun exposure. I would like to purchase new parts either OEM or aftermarket but have had little luck in finding them. I would even consider used or salvaged parts in serviceable condition. Any help in locating these parts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

      1987 YFM350FWTB 350 4x4 Big Bear when going uphill will sometimes act like the clutch realeases then re-engauge all at once.
      Seems to maybe be little more often if the engine is at about 1/2 throttle instead of at lower rpms.
      I have the Factory Service manual and checked the external clutch adjustment screw as ok and the H/L/reverse shifter lever linkage as adjusted correctly. It appears to be maybe a internal (inside the case) clutch issue or ??
      This is the type Big Bear that has the manual shift lever on the left front fender and has the manual foot shifter lever with 5 speeds forward.
      Can someone tell me how the primary and secondary clutch operates? 
      I assume one is mechanical and one is centrifugal. (what I'm asking is one clutch for the higher rpms and one for the lower rpms or ???. (the clutch appears to only momentarily release at the higher rpms is why I ask. The cycle has about 3000 miles of low speed through the brush hunting and has been well maintained, oil changed, etc and no deep water or mud useage.
      Anyone been into a similar issue with the big Bear ATV????

      i have a 2001 suzuki quadmaster 500 4x4 that the primary cvt clutch is rusted on any ideas on how to get it off i want to try to reuse it if possible.

      Recently started shifting hard from neutral to first causing it to stall. I'm able to lift up on the shifter and throttle up and slowly let off the shifter, like driving a standard. That is the only way to get it In gear and stay running. Also if I come to a stop and keep it in gear it wants to continue moving, eventually stalling out. I don't have much experience with the bottom end or clutches. I just now replaced friction and steel plates and that made no difference. Don't know what to do now.

      I just bought a Yamaha Big Bear 350 from 1992. The previous owner has run it on regular engine oil and I have problems with the clutch slipping. I think that's the reason.
      So what should I do?
      - Just change oil and it will be OK?
      - Clean engine/clutch + new oil?
      - Or do I need a new clutch?

      It is guessing the centrifugal clutch that slips. It has two clutches , it also has a "regular" clutch .
      Anyone who has any experience of using wrong type of oil?
