I'm working on my brothers' 2002 Suzuki Vinson 500 . It sat for a few years before I got into it. I'm concentrating on the carb - I replaced orings, needle, etc. and soaked jets, bowl and anything that I could get off the carb that the solution wouldn't eat. I also removed the tank and flushed it with hot water - it's clean. The gas cap innards rusted away and the tank had a lot of rust and water in it before I cleaned it. I replaced the gas cap and installed a new fuel valve because the screens were broken in the old one. The bike will run but spits and sputters and backfires. If you "open it up" it falls on its face and stalls - but starts right up. Can anyone point me in the direction of the problem? It may still be a "clean carb parts issue" . My problem is that the parts list doesn't identify the parts to a degree that I understand. If you said" look at the pilot jet", I'm not sure which jet that would be....See what I mean? It'll run very good if I remove the air filter and cover the opening with my hand and part my fingers a little for the air to get in. Any help is greatly appreciated.

got 7 atvs off CL recently for a good price. one of which is a yamaha warrior. anyone know where the vin is printed on this bike? Haha good place to start as I do not know year or size yet. The former owner says needs exhaust ans and clutch work. he said it ran fine until the clutch cable broke and then I couldn't get the new cable adjusted right and it would grind gears. things I see: clutch cable locked up again, no brakes, carb leaking (green with algae around the bowl and has gelled gas stalagtights on it), aftermarket exhaust melted the airbox so I need something different and a new air box. I would like the use the current exhaust if I can but I have a feeling its a redneck fix as it looks like there is an ace bandage holding it to the exhaust pipe (its an aftermarket slip-on exhaust), so I'm not sure about that- lets get the bike running first. also, battery (looks brand new, what a shame) is dead, 0 volts. Otherwise, bike looks to have not been wrecked, and plastics are ok (it sat outside under a 'tarp' for 3+ years since it was run last). any tips and advise on where to start first would be awesome as this is my first clutched bike (manual).
the clutch is my main concern- I've never rode a clutched bike so I dont even know what its supposed to feel like. lol I'm spoiled on my automatic polaris
Hey guys, figure you guys would have some helpful direction or answers.
So, 05 Sportsman 700 carb, new carb, fuel pump, new plugs, new air filter, new everything I can think of that is usually the running issues. Starts up fine, seems to run fine, but if under load, two people, or even one person, up a hill, or pulling a drag chain for the driveway, it starts to cut out and sputters and loses all power, until I back off on the throttle and just barely try to let itself catch itself and then I can take off again.
I am going crazy trying to figure this thing out. Other than that, the quad runs great. Parents bought bran new, just used around the property, 5000 miles on it. Any ideas???

I'm new to the site. My son and I have decided to bring back our old quad from the dead. Does anyone know where we can purchase a cylinder kit for it. I think it's a 1986, but will have to check the VIN to be sure.
The last time it ran, it was tapping and smoking pretty bad.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey all, I just want to start by saying I am brand spanking new to the wide world of ATV's. I had one as a kid, then didnt step foot on one again till yesterday. And that brings me to this site. I just got a used Timberwolf 2wd of Craigslist. I am a very excited new quad owner. Its not perfect, it smokes and if you dont stay on the gas it turnes off most of the time. Also there is no battery atm so I am using the pull start. So heres my deal. I got it right around sun down. Rode it around for about 10 minutes, bought it. Rode it around again for another maybe 20 minutes as the sun was fully set. (It needs a battery before the lights will work I am told). So I park it. Next morning. I go outside, pull the choke. And she fires right up. Rode her around for about 30 - 45 minutes. I got home from that ride and was going to go park it. I down shifted into neutral so as to put it in reverse, and before I could get it in gear it died. And I hanvt been able to get it started again. Choke in choke out nothing. I have a couple ideas, let me know what you all think.
1. Clean the very very filthy air filter, not sure though it would make it die and not start.
2. Clean the carb. I am very confused though because it worked and worked then all the sudden nothing.
3. Get a battery. I am hoping that in getting a battery it will work with the electronic start.
4.Change the gas. The gas that came with it is discolored and looks old. Still, it got me 10 miles at least no problem.
I kinda think maybe the fact that it cant hold an idle withoout being on the gas may have something to do with why it now wont start.
Other than that, all I can think is to take it to a shop. But I am a broke ass so I really dont want to have to do that. Any questions or suggestions would be great.
I have a 1996 kawasaki bayou 300 that i cant seem to get running for more then about 10 seconds i think i need it to spin a little faster. i had it giving it to me and havent ever worked on a four wheeler yet. i have already cleaned the carb and did all the maintainance things i could think of. and am hoping for a good starting point Thanks Guys!!
It just started a few days ago, when you start it up it idles perfect but as soon as you give it throttle it starts popping and cracking like its flooding out...I thought it was the carb. boot bc it had a hole on both sides of it. Replaced it nd it still does no better. Checked spark plug, valve clearance, air cleaner nd made sure no water in fuel. It sounds like a vacume leak or water in the fuel. Or like the timing is retard. I only have a maintenance manual. I would b much abliged if someone could give me an idea? THANK YOU!
New memeber here..like most came looking for some help..other forums i have tried have not gotten any responses..so here goes
2001 wolverine..when problems started i went for a ride and 10 minutes into it, bike shut off..i could use push button and fire it back up..few mintues later shut off again this time i had to pull start it..drove it home and parked it..from then on i could not use push button or pull start.when i pushed start button no clicks or anyting, neutral light and oil light came on but that's it..so i inspected kill switch..it was bad..so i rewired to bypass kill switch (i think i got it right)..after this when i pushed start button i got a single click at the start circuit cut off relay (little white relay beside starter solenoid)..still could not pull start nor could i jump accross the solenoid to start (wasn't getting spark either way..so i replaced ignition coil (spark plug is new, i tried old plug as well)..still no changes..then i took off the start circuit cut off relay, using two jumper wires i completed that circuit with the relay out..kinda by accident i had unplugged the small red wire coming off the battery/fuse, at the bullet connector..now with the red wire disconnected, and kill switch bypassed, i could get it to crank at push button, but still no spark..but got it to start with pull cord..rode for 5 min, then it backfired, and the bike cut off on me, then it would start back up on its own (i guess because i was rolling pretty good).go for 10 yards, cut off, start back up on its own, 10 more yards cut off again.(by this time my speed was way down)...this time it just died and didn't start back up..let it sit a couple of minutes and finally got it to start with pull start..got it back home...after it cools down i can pull start it every time as long as that little red wire is disconnected, but it won't run for long, ( it will idle forever, but when i drive it and put a load on it, it will not run very long and it will cut off again..when i hook the red wire back up to use push button, i get no spark, but with that relay bypassed it will turn the starter, but no spark...i had inspected/cleaned all connectors, inspected all wiring i could( i pulled all tape off wiring harness and went over it)..i have been at this for a couple of weeks and am stumped at this point..i am gonna test my pick up coil later today ( i think i already tested it but i'm gonna test it again to be sure) and see if it is within spec..but i looked at the previous owners service records and in January of 2012 (one year and 9 months ago) he had the stator replaced at the dealer..so i'm thinking my stator is probably good, as well as the pick up coil, but you never know.. but i just don't know what else it could be..if my cdi was going bad, would i be able to pull start it and drive at all??.i read that when they go bad, they usually completely die. .disconnecting that red wire is the only way i can pull start it, hook red wire back up, and i get no spark either way (button or pull start)
can anyone give me some advice/guidance on what to check next??..i'm starting to believe it is a wiring issue, but i have looked and looked and cannot find any bad/loose connections or bare wire/wires, not to say i haven't overlooked something..someone told me it could be the voltage regulator/rectifier but i dont think that's it..i'm leaning towards stator/pick up coil.
battery is at 13v when i charge it, then it will go down to 12.4 or so after i try turning the engine over..haven't tested under load..replacement battery is on the way in any case
spark plug is new (also tried old plug which was still good)
replaced ignition coil
start circuit relay is bad, will replace asap, but can get starter to turn with relay bypassed with jumper wires and red wire coming off battery disconnected
can pull start with red wire disconnected, relay bypassed, but will not run long, as soon as it gets warm it will start shutting off..will idle fine..just when i put the engine under load is it shutting off)
also when i pull start, the neutral light is very faint (becuase red wire is disconnected)..but when i rev the engine, light gets even fainter
headlights also flicker/dim when i rev it up (again with red wire disconnected)
i believe i have kill switch bypassed properly..can't remember what wires connected, think it was a black/yellow stripe and red/white stripe)
I also have my parking brake safety/rev limiter out of the circuit..( i unplugged them then plugged the black wire into back/white wire at bullet connectors and disconnected the white plug coming off the parking brake if i rememeber correctly)
The only grounds i can find is the one coming off negative battery terminal, cleaned it, and the gound (black wire i believe) going onto the ignition coil, along with the orange wire..that ground appears to be good and is nice and tight
I pulled wiring harness and inspected every inch, found no issues
Any ideas, questions, concerns, or comments??
I have a multi meter so i can perform tests on wiring/electrical components..i also have an ammeter if needed..i just need some help on this
I have a chinese (Jainshe puma 250) quad that is a yamaha beartracker knockoff. I think the problem I am having is a generic (to other brands/cycles) one. Here goes:
It won't start with the electric start, cranks good but won't fire. A quick pull on the rope and it kicks right off.... Idles fine and revs decent. After it is warm it will sometimes start with the starter but usually not. Always starts right up with the rope.
This just started after I ran it without oil and almost siezed the motor..... Things got pretty warm down there...... (has new cyl, head and gasket, piston, and rings now with 12 bar (175 psi) compression)
The way it's acting is there just isn't enough power to fire the plug when the starter is turning. Also, when you ride it, it goes along just fine to about half throttle then looses power after..... Carb is fine, has been cleaned and adjusted..... Even put a carb off the same one that was/is running fine with the same results.......
Any idea where I should look? As far as I can see, there only 4 parts to the ignition. The CDI box, the stator, the coil, and the sparkplug. The part exposed to the heat was the stator, but could it be causing the problem I'm having?
Or can someone point me to an active/helpful forum for quads in the UK. American ones don't get a lot of action that I see and the german ones don't have a lot of "fixers" and the language barrier don't help much.
