Suzuki LT80 Quadsport ISSUES

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. New to the forum!

Hers is my issue.

I have a Suzuki LT80 (Not sure what year-I think it is 2002) and it will not start. I was told the starter is new and it has a new battery. I checked the battery and it reads 12.5V. When I hit the start button all I get is a click in the black 4 prong relay. I also unplugged it and jumped the 2 big wires but all it does is spark and get hot. It also gets hot if I keep pushing the start button. I also unplugged the white plug by the gas tank, hooked a wire to it and tried a battery charger...same thing...wires get hot. Then I removed the starter and used the battery charger on it. I hooked the black to the starter casing and the red to the hot lead on the starter...all it did was spark and make the battery charger hum louder. Is the starter bad? Do I need a relay? Both? I also know about the red button under the plastic. It wasn't even tripping so I bypassed it just to try what I could. I'm at a loss. I just want it to run for my son to ride. If anyone can help please do so. Thanks in advance!

Best way to check the starter is to jump it straight from a charged battery. By what you described so far it does seem like a bad starter. There are rebuild gets for them.

How does the pull start work?

Is the pull start broken or was it not equipped with the option?

Yes, can be frustrating. Be methodical. If your starter does check good by battery jump, then the relay is the next suspect. After that, wiring.

It has never had a pull start...was the battery charger too much to check it with? Could I clamp the black clamp on the stater housing and the red on where the wire hooks and use the setting "12V maintainer" I think I may have use the 12v 200amp engine start setting when testing it...I may have messed it up myself somehow. Thanks for the info so far!

Direct jump from a charged battery is best. Chargers limit amperage to deliver a trickle feed. Better to use the components the system was designed for.

put in in gear and try to push start it down a hill

There are no gears, CVT drive. Plus it's a centrifugal clutch.

If you can do that, you have more trouble than a starter.

I dont thing you did any thing too it. Looks like an old burnt out starter to me.

I ended up needing a starter. I got it to run and my son can ride but I have to jump the red wires in the plug where the relay goes to get it to turn over. I even bought a brand new relay...plug it up...hit the start button and nothing! I keeping having to jump the wires to get it to start. It should start with the realy plugged in right? What would cause it to not work...since the relay is BRAND NEW???

The start switch/button has been known to go bad.

Tell me if Im thinking right::: You are holding the start button then touching the wires together to make the starter turn?

"I ended up needing a starter"....... LOL...Ray Charles seen that the old starter was bad. :D :D

Now i was driving it down the road today and all sudden it shut down i thought it ran out of gas but it didnt. After it shut downi pushed it to the side of the road and tried to crank it over but it wont crank over. It is a electric start none of the lights or anything work So what i was thinking its in the wiring somewhere right? Does any one have a website that has a wiring diagram for this 4 wheeler or does any one know what else it can be? If anyone has any idea please let me know everything willprobley help thanks guys!!!

Just now rolling over 100k miles. Been feeling some steering weirdness so I get one front wheel up in the air and push at 3 and 9 and sure enough there's some wobble. Pushing at 12 and 6 gives no play at all.
Although I'll probably be replacing the worn part myself I need some help diagnosing what all might need to be replaced. And since I need an alignment anyway I've made a deal w/ my local Goodyear tire shop to do a pre alignment inspection and identify my bad part(s) so I can replace them before they do the job.
When I drop the car off what specific parts should I ask them to look at? I'm sure tie rod ends but what other kind of worn parts could be causing movement on the 3-9 push test?

I have two 2003 Suzuki Ozark 250s, both 2-wheel drive.  Last time we rode them about a year ago, the red one was not running well, didn't want to idle, backfired a lot.  The green one ran fine.
Fast forward...I ordered a carb kit for both of them, thinking the red one has some trash in a jet.  Both of these ATVs have had little use and I've always ran the gas out after use (put an inline cutoff valve in gas line).  I pull started the red one to verify it was still running bad.  It will start and idle, but as soon as you give it any throttle, it dies instantly.  Give it a little choke, dies instantly.  Took the carb apart and it was spotless.  Went ahead and cleaned all the holes with carb cleaner and blew everything out with compressed air.  All new jets, main jet holder, and needles.  Put it back on and nothing changed.  Starts, idles (not for a long time), but dies as soon as you give it gas.  Same happens when you put the choke on.  It does the same thing when I try to run it turned to prime on the petcock as it does in the on position.
Not an air filter issue.  It is clean and it does the same exact thing with no filter on it.
Thought maybe there was a float issue or maybe a damaged diaphragm, so I took the carb off the green Ozark and put it on red.  Started up and initially ran normal and revved for about 10 seconds and then started doing the same exact thing.  Starts, idles (not for a long time), but dies as soon as you give it gas.  Same happens when you put the choke on.
      So...not the carb
Thought maybe vacuum petcock was bad, but there's no gas in the vacuum line going from petcock to carb and gas flows freely when on prime.  I even plugged the vacuum line at both the petcock and carb end and tried to run it with valve set to prime.  Gas flows freely, but does exactly the same thing.  I unscrewed the screw at the bottom of the bowl and gas flows thru carb and out bowl drain line when petcock is set to prime.
So, I'm assuming petcock is good?
Checked spark plug and it wasn't fouled.  Reset gap, didn't help.  Will swap plugs between Ozarks tomorrow but I don't think that is it.
Anyway, that he history and now you're all caught up.  Scratching my head.  Valves? These were bought at same time and have had little use.  Suggestions?
      Thanks!

I just bought two 1985 TRX250's from my father-in-law. One runs great, the other not so much. The one is having issues with the shifter. The shifter seems to be resting lower than normal. When I press the shifter downward, it just pops back up. Any thougjts as to what the issue might be?

Hi everyone! I have a 1986 yamaha moto4 200 that's been sitting for a while! Cleaned the carb, replaced engine oil, put fresh gas in it. Got it running and went for a ride! It was running great just a little backfire once in a while! I barely made it home on the way back and now the bike won't run at all since then! It will start if I give a little bit of throttle but dies instantly as soon as I let go off the throttle! And even if I try to rev it up it'll sound like its not getting enough gas.. it revs up a couple hundred rpm's and backfires through the carb.. it almost sounds as if I was trying to take off from zero in 5th gear! Nothing is seized though! I dissasembled the head and the piston and cylinder are fine! Rebuilt the carb, replaced the ignition source coil.. I don't know what to do anymore.. compression test shows 90 psi Specs are 128 psi but i'm not sure if I trust my compression tester.. any ideas? Thanks!!
