1990 Yamaha Big Bear - Rear Diff Top Up Fix

Recommended Posts

Rear axle top up threaded housing broke today; please see pic.

Quad still usable until today but no value in it for costly replacement.

Would welcome any thoughts on "how can I keep it running" can the housing be repaired ???

Thanks oxidized_black

I have never used either heli coil or jb weld but have taken the time to look at youtube for both product usage.

Is there any added advice on the job for the 'Big Bear' broken thread that you can point me to.

Some questions I have to start with:

Do I need to strip out the casing to drill the hole to insert the coil

Do I use the original Big Bear (top up oil) bolt head in the new coil

Do I put the coil in before I start using and building up with the jb weld

Hope you don't mind these questions.

i think you can get a heli coil for the existing thread and another plug bolt that will fit in that new thread ...

once you have the heli coil in, i would start the build up from there ... just make sure the area is squeaky clean ... maybe use some brake cleaner spray all around that area

Yes I just got a 1998 polaris xplorer 400 4x4. Ran fine after hauling then died. Cleaned carb and put new fuel filter, hose, and new battery in. Starts 3 out of 10 times but will only run for a short time. Any suggestions?

Fixing up a 1998 King Quad 300. The rear brake was locked up, and the owner tried to force it free and snapped the axle.

I disconnected the brake cable, and tapped on the backing plate with a soft mallet to get the brake freed up. When I pulled off the brake drum a bunch of nasty rust water came out.

Once I had the axle out, I popped the boot off so I could see the inner u joint so I could phase/synchronize it with the outer. There was a flat steel disc floating around in the boot, looks like it used to be pressed into the end of the axle. Glad I got that out of there before it munched up the joint.

The book says the yokes should be aligned, I couldn't get mine aligned. They were always 7 degrees off from each other. A bit frustrating, maybe that's within the tolerance limits?

But I got it all back together and it runs great.

Does anybody know how to determine which of the 2 key blanks fits my ATV. I have called several dealers, and Polaris and nobody seems to know which key fits which ATV. I thought with the ViN number they could look it up, but apparently not. I hate to spend the money at Polaris for a key blank and then pay a locksmith to cut it, but the locksmiths around me don't have the Polaris keys in stock. I find them on Amazon and places, but I can't tell which key blank is right for my ATV. Any help would be appreciated.

Haven't got a service manual for this yet so I'm flying by the seat of my pants I made myself a shifter extension to go up by the gas tank took my foot shifter off to weld it and now when I put it back on I don't seem to be able to find neutral. Is there some asinine reason that you have to do something internally when you change or remove the foot shifter? It was a simple take off weld put back on and dog bite my pecker it's not working. I hope this is something simple I've done and that's something I need brain surgery for. Cheers fellas I know y'all will have the right answers
