I have a 2004 Polaris Trail Boss 330 and I want to eventually fix it up if possible, but the thing is the transmission or Gearbox that allows you to shift into forward and reverse and such isn't connect to the engine at all, it isn't even bolted into the frame. Anyways the Secondary Driven clutch is missing. The ignition was busted so I switched it out and tried to hook up power to it and the lights wouldn't light up and it wouldn't try to let me start it with the electric starter. So I bridged the connectors on the starter solenoid and it cranks the motor. I was wondering if anyone knew why the dash lights don't work or any of the buttons. I did find a cable disconnected I have a picture of maybe someone can tell me what it's supposed to be connected to. It has 3 wires going to the connect Green Purple Red. I'll enclose a picture of it and where it is connected on the wiring harness.1 point

@Hondasher that's a great approach. Definitely keep us posted on the fixes as they happen or if you get stuck.1 point

Wow its in pretty good shape for a 94. That was a simple atv. Just look under the front end, theres nothing to it. Simple and effective design. Same thing goes for the engine. If your mechanically inclined you should be able to pull the motor and split it open. BUT before all that have you drained the oil and looked for pieces of gear that may have broke off In the drain pan? How does the shifter feel when you shift up? Do some simple checking first before anything crazy and make sure of what's going on. But this all depends on how handy you are.1 point

as to riding atvs up rams into the bed of a pickup, i do this too although we usually trailer my bikes places. three things never to do when loading an atv with ramps is: never go to fast up the ramps (you wont have a rear window in your truck) never stop on the ramps and then try to start off again (the ramps will no longer be under your atv and we all know how gravity works) never miss the ramps (no duh but way to many of us dont know how to aim soooo) its important to know your quad inside and out as loading with ramps is a more involved activity and its important to keep a even throttle to avoid busting your butt and ruining your bike. so i would agree for beginners, either go buy a trailer or make sure you video it so when you screw up the rest of those beginners out there might be able to learn from your stupidity1 point

Fantastic. The community is here to help. Several of us have had a LOT of 220's over the years so there's quite a bit of knowledge available should you need assistance.1 point

Yes. I replaced every gasket from the base cylinder gasket all the way to the top. The oring around the cam cover was also crushed like that...so just crap seals. Sold it last night though so the haunted Kodiak is someone else's issue now. Once the 300 is back together i have a 300 2wd Bayou bought that will be next in line. It just needs basic maintenance and clean up. bought it cheap and should be a good little utility ATV. The Bayou is one of my favorites to flip because they are simple, cheap and reliable.1 point

These are actually some very good four wheelers. I just finished reviving another one yesterday. One of the most reliable engines on any Polaris. The fact that the gearbox is off makes me think the gearbox was broken. Typically it’s not the engine that puts these in their grave, it’s that gear box. If you have free time, it’s certainly worth trying to get back to running/driving form. Good luck!1 point

@Frank Angerano@Frank AngeranoThank you, I will provide more pictures when I am able, I am currently working. Anyways that was my initial thinking, for the Gearbox being unbolted is they either wrecked it, or it's a replacement they were going to put on. I want to first make sure the engine is viable by trying to get it to start once I figure out why the power won't work. Then if the engine is good and runs, then I can buy the parts I need to make it back into a good running quad.1 point

@Hondasher welcome to Quadcrazy. Sounds like you have an ambitious project on your hands. Can you post a few more pictures of that area of the plug? I will check the wiring when i get a minute but before you get into all that the fact that the drive train is unbolted is where i would start first. Either it was blown and someone was going to pull it out for repair OR someone needed it and never get it off the atv. I would proceed with caution at first and check the big stuff out first.1 point

I worked at a Honda dealer in Vero Beach Fl. when they introduced the atc 90. We set the first two up as demos and spent every weekend at Hobart Park (about 2 square miles of sand dunes and a few wooded trails) where we first learned what they would and would not do, then made every effort to instruct customers on what we learned. Some learned and some did not. It was a sad day for me when those who would not or could not learn brought about the end of the 3 wheeler. Quads are far more stable and versatile. They should have been an addition instead of a replacement. Having learned to ride on a 3 wheeler I will always miss them. My advice to any new rider; the biggest safety issue with any machine is the operator, know the limitations (yours and the machines) and last you will never be it's master treat it with respect or it will bite you. Ride safe and never stop learning.1 point
