    Cleaning a Nikasil Plated Cylinder

In this video, Jonathan describes how he cleaned a Nikasil plated cylinder. Aluminum cylinders are often coated with a harder material such as Nikasil (Nickel Silicon Carbide). Over time, the softer aluminum of the pistons can rub off onto the cylinder. When rebuilding the top-end, this should be cleaned off. This can be done using hydrochloric acid which reacts with aluminum to produce hydrogen gas and aluminum chloride, which washed off with water. Since Nikasil is resistant to corrosion, it is undamaged and protects the cylinder during this process. Here is the chemical reaction: 2 Al (s) + 6 HCl (aq) → 2 AlCl3 (aq) + 3 H2 (g) Resurgence Small Engine Inc. ATV, Snowmachine, Motorcycle, & Outdoor Power Equipment
  4. Something to think about if you have cooling coming out of that hole in the bottom of your engine! One of the damaged components on this engine was pitting on the water pump impeller shaft. This would have caused the coolant to leak out of the engine crankcase and probably was the root cause of its failure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cacO8F5wLRg
  5. In this video, Jonathan looks at a crashed ATV with a throttle position sensor (TPS) error. Watch to see the importance of the sensor position. This Polaris 2009 Sportsman XP 550 was brought to the shop because the engine did not sound right after it was crashed. It arrived with error code 520194 - 3, which corresponds to abnormally high voltage values from the throttle position sensor. Upon inspection, the sensor is working correctly, but had been jarred out of position in the impact. Watch this video to see Jonathan demonstrate how to align the throttle position sensor and to see what happens when it is not quite where it is supposed to be.
  6. Here is an issue we see often at the shop! In this video, Robyn explains how to confirm the year of an ATV using the VIN. It is important to confirm the ATV model year as this is a commonly mistaken characteristic that is often essential to order the correct part. Each VIN consists of 17 characters. The 10th character will help you identify the machine year. To do so, compare it with the chart available on our website: https://resurgencesmallengine.com/machine-identification
