  1. Yep inspection cap for inspecting/adjusting the clearance of your valves. Just don't over tighten it when putting it back on. They are only cast alum. and I busted one because I over tightened and couldn't get it loose.
  2. It is your voltage regulator. Just had to replace the one on my Arctic Cat 250 2003 again. When the voltage regulator goes it fries the battery and nothing will work. So if you got a new battery without checking the voltage regulator and tried to pull start it you probably fried the new battery too.

  4. Hey all, I have an Arctic Cat 250 and have had it for 13 years now. We do most of our riding in the mountains and she pretty much goes where the 300 and 500 go. I have to keep an eye on my ground clearance but wouldn't trade her for nothing else.
  5. Hello, well back to where I was last year with this carb. Took my 250 to the mountains for the first time this year and blue smoke, too much gas again. I can't believe that this carb gives me this much trouble. Seems like the choke is stuck but the cable moves freely. Anyone else ever experience this issue? Do you think a new choke cable would maybe resolve this?http://www.quadcrazy.com/atvforum/images/smilies/arghh.gif OK it was the choke. Put on all new cable and plunger and she is running 100% again. So now the question is, is the carb getting worn out where the plunger needle goes in the small hole and when I use the choke the needle end doesn't get lined back up with the hole?? We'll see how it runs and now that I know what the issue is I can always pull the choke plunger out and reinstall if I start having this issue again.
  6. Ok, got the right jets for the carb and adjusted the valves. Smoke is gone and running great. Final test will be taking it to the mountains this weekend and see how it runs up there.
  7. Ebay but be careful because most of them are for California altitude.
  8. Ebay, but the kit was for CA and not CO so the jets were wrong. So now that we have the correct jets and adjusted the valves I think we have the 250 running again.
  9. You don't think the flooding of the carb could be washing the oil off the cylinder and burning it?????????////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
  10. Smoke is blue, gas flooding is the symptom. Cylinder specd out great all the way. Cylinder walls were as smooth as can be and ran the hone down it one time. Never checked the crankcase vent line. Will do that. Found out that the jets are not correct. Dealer mechanic didn't think to check that until I said something. So we are going for correct jets and see what that does. I'll ask them to check the crankcase vent also. Thanks for your help.
  11. I am about at my wits end. Took the 250 back to the dealer repair shop AGAIN. Had it in there two months ago for a bad smoking issue. I thought it was to much fuel and washing the oil off the cylinder and burning it. They said it was the head. So I purchased new valves, valve guides, oil seals and had the head professionally done. So $225 later I had a great looking head. Well while I had the ATV apart this far I also got new rings for the piston. Mic'd everything out and everything was in spec. Put it back together and seemed like it smoked a little at the house (5000 feet above sea level). Took it to the mountains (9000 feet above seal level) for Sept. bear hunting and couldn't use it. Smoked worse than before and couldn't run it past half throttle or it would flood itself out. So brought it back home and it is back at the shop again. I say it is something in the carb that isn't set right or wrong jet????????? Anyone have any other ideas that it could be?
  12. Still running great. Just wanted to let everyone know.
  13. Go to Walmart and get a battery. Go to NAPA, Auto Zone or O'Rilleys for the spartk plug and plug wire and fuel line. I get my brakes off ebay, about 1/3 the price of buying from Arctic Cat. I do buy some parts from Cat but when I can save money I will. Hope this helps and good luck with getting it running.
  14. Ok put the carb kit in and it got a little better but still leaking gas into the cylinder sporatically. Found out that the diaphram in the carb also needed replaced. Carb issues resolved but not the voltage regulator/rectifier went out. Get that replaced and it aught to be good for another 8000 miles.
  15. Check your voltage regulator/rectifier. If it is bad it will drain your battery in about two days.
  16. Ok, going to try a whole new carb rebuild kit and see if that helps. Wish me luck.
  17. Help, The carb started leaking gas out of my 2000 300 so I shut the gas off. 6 months later I get a chance to check into it and the needle is stuck in the brass seat. New needle and cleaned the carb good and now the gas won't shut off. Fills the air box/cylinder with gas. I had it apart 3 times and nothing I did seems to solve the continual gas flow. I really don't want to spend $379 for a new carb. Any suggestions? I did notice the tangs, arm that hold the float pin are really wore out, lots of slop for the float pin. Put a piece of hose on the gas inlet, blew through the hose and lifted the float and it will shut off air being blown. But, hook the gas line up to carb and gas just keeps running out of it.
  18. Hello all, hope someone can help me out. Just did an overhaul on this 500 TIS and I still have a carb issue. This is one of those carbs with two additional rubber diaphs in it. When ridding in H it seems to be starving for gas and quits all the time. When ridding in L it works better until you really need some power then same thing, starving for gas. I have all the settings per the manual. Can anyone give me a clue as to where I may need to make an adjustment?
  19. Just an update, waiting for the wet clutch and shaft to get here. They have been on backorder. I did some more checking and one of the piston rings was wore in an oval patern. Mic'd the cylinder and it was all good. So put a new set of rings in. Now just waiting for the rest of the parts to get in so it can go back together. The coil tested good so I am hoping that the piston ring may have had something to do with it failing after getting hot????
  20. OK, update on the 500. Found the wet clutch Nut to be less than finger tight. I believe that is where the clattering noise is coming from. So on to the problem of it dying. It doesn't just die it slowly gets weak and if you let off the throttle then it dies and won't start. Does anyone think a plugged oil pump screen would cause this? So you think I should test the coil? I will try that and see what it says. Thanks in advance for any help.
  21. I had the same problem with our 2000 300 and it was the valves. Had to order new valves because the old intake ones ended up inside the head as the face wore down. While I was on a roll I tore the 2003 250 apart and it was just about to the same point. Redid the valves on that one too. Good luck.
  22. Ok, it was the choke inside the carb. Was gummy and sticking. So both the 250 and the 300 are up and running great. Can't wait to get to the mountains with them. It is antler hunting season. Thanks again for all the help.
  23. Hello, my 500 makes this clattering noise when started and when it warms up (15 min riding or going up a hill) it dies and you can't get it started until it cools off. Usually let it sit for 15 min and it will start back up again. I have torn it apart expecting to see a bad piston/rings/wrist pin etc. but nothing is bad. I did not check the valve clearance before tearing it apart figured that valve clearance wouldn't keep it from starting once warm. Anyway, have taken off both side covers and the clutches. Nothing seems to be worn or obvious. Anyone have any suggestions on what to look for? Would a bad waterpump cause this?
  24. OK the 250 is back together and running. I still have a carb issue on this one. It will run fine for a while then it acts like the choke is on. I have cleaned the carb twice now. Any suggestions?
  25. Hey everyone thanks for all the advice. The machine is running great now. Even took it up to the mountains and put 28 miles on it ridding double through mud and snow. Just can't keep a good Cat down. Now it is the 250's turn for a valve job. Got the head back on Wednesday and will go in tomorrow. Man I can't believe that they put such crappy intake valves in these motors. Well at least we should be good for another 5000 miles on these two. Happy ridding to everyone.
