So I got a 2003 arctic cat 400 in a trade it was sputtering a little so I drained gas and cleaned the carb. Ran good for about a day then started back. I took the carb off again and cleaned it, it had dirt in it again. While I had it off I soaked the air filter in gas and then blew it out and cleaned the intake. While I was waiting for stuff to dry I have seen where people run there snorkels straight from the carb and tun the air filter off the top of snorkel so out of curiosity I ran it like that and I made a mistake of not checking to see if my pipes had dirt in them well I ran it and after a minute or two it started smoking from the intake so I shut it off and there was sand around the inside of the intake and now it won't start back up I'm wondering what I could have messed up and what I can do to fix. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I was plowing with my my quad last night and the thing just started sputtering and died. It will start and idle but if I put it in gear or try to give it gas while in neutral it stalls. If I feather the gas it will rev but then winds down stalls and then pops. I removed the carb and cleaned it, still doing it. I drained the fuel and put new fuel with sea foam, still doing it. I pulled the fuel line and started the engine and there is plenty of gas flowing out. Maybe the electric choke? But I don't smell it flooding. I guess I will try the plug next, but it doesn't seem like a plug issue, it's acting like a fuel thing. But the carb is super clean and the fuel is new. Anyone have anything ideas?

Need some advice... The exhaust coming out of the engine glows red hot when running for a few minutes. I have been told it is running too lean. How do I fix this? is there an adjustment on the carb? if so, where is it located? Thanks!

Hello, I have aquired this 4 wheeler from my Dad who is moving to a town home. I will be mostly using if for plowing snow but there will be an occational trip though the woods with the kids. When plowing a pass and stoping the 4 wheeler will kill. It will start up and keep going if I keep my thumb on the throttle a little. My next issue is the other day I took my daughter for a ride on level ground. When I turned around the 4 wheeler sputtered so I gave it more gas, when I looked behind me there was a big cloud of white thick smoke. Not sure where this came from. I would like to try and fix this myself since the repair cost at a shop I'm guessing would be expensive. This is a manual transmission with a foot pedal shift. Would it matter if I started in 2nd gear? Any help anyone can give is appreciated. I'm not affraid to take it apart and put it back together I just need to know where I should start. Thanks, DB

Several months ago I repaired the carb to my sons 98 300 2x4... My mechanic cleaned the carb and replaced a needle seat... $6 part... My question... Is there anyway to prime the darn thing? The high idle gas setting does not do a good job priming the carb for cold starting... If you let the thing sit for a month or so it is the coldest natured engine I have ever owned... Ever... I understand that the newer carbed models came with a primer bulb... Is there a fix for this issue other than ponying up for a newer carb??? BTW, I filled up the tank with gas and utilized ethanol treatment... Many thanks for any replies...

First a potentially important note - my electric start has not worked since I got the quad. I have not yet tried to track down what is wrong, because I bought this when it was warm outside and it always started up on the first or second pull. I never even have to choke or prime it, it just starts. Now that it's getting colder outside, I'm having a much harder time getting it to start. If I pull until I'm sweating, I can usually get it going. If I have one of my kids hold the throttle down a little it seems to help, but I can't do that and pull at the same time. I have tried combinations of choke and priming it, but they don't seem to make any difference. This leads me to a few questions: 1. Is there a recommended cold-start procedure? Choke and prime? 2. I notice that when I prime, some gas sprays out onto the engine. If I prime once I don't notice it, but if I prime 2 or 3 times I see it spray out. Maybe there is too much fuel in the carb? 3. It pulls pretty hard. Is there any kind of decompression switch that I am not seeing? The pull rope is probably original, but I have snapped it off twice at the handle in the last few months because it pulls so hard. Once it is warmed up, then it starts on the first pull every time with no problems at all. If I had a heated garage I'd just stick it in, but not going to heat an area just to keep this thing happy Thanks in advance!

I got a branch stuck up under my back axle on the right side and it sheared the boot closet to the tire off. The guy at the atv place said I'd have to take the boot off on the inside too, because that's the way they designed it. I'm hoping this is bull crap, and I only have to fix the one. Either way, I bought new boots and bands for each on the back right side. I need to buy a banding tool with a cutter next, to complete the ensemble. My question is, how hard of a fix is this? I was going to ask my uncle if he could do it. I know it'll be a greasy mess, but is it simple? I don't want it to get torn apart just to end up being hauled over to the garage. I want to get some use out of it this summer, since I spent a good penny on new front tires for it this spring, along with brand new oil/filter, and spark plug. It does me no good sitting in the barn looking dejected and forlorn.

Been having trouble getting this quad to run. when its in neutral the reverse light is on too and will only start if you hold the reverse overide button and will run but only if you hold the starter button on while running soon as you let off either button it dies, and to start again you have to turn the ignition off and then back on. Also, wont have spark unless its in that gear but when it fires up it creeps backwards. if you jiggle the shifter (auto) and get the neutral light on it wont have spark only if the reverse and neutral light is on and you hold the override button down will it pop off. Any ideas anyone this is driving me crazy!

Hello! I have a junk Arctic cat 1998 250 2x4 I'm parting out, and I'm wondering if the parts are worth selling, (I.E. worth time to mess with). Iv got part of the Engine and the Jug with Piston, no Head/Valves. I'm thinking of putting the parts on Ebay if there is any demand. Any help or question/ Comments welcome! Thanks, Mike

hello. i just got a 2000 artic cat 500 4x4. I've got tons of questions. the prior owner was unsure. it wont run. i removed the tank strainer and carb. both are gummud up solid:) I'm working on that now. I'll let you know. It was really easy to remove both:). - How can i tell what year the machine is for sure? - should it have a dip stick on the oil filler cap, or do I fill the oil to the top of the fill hole? - where is a good place to get online parts? - what year did these bikes go to independent rear suspension? thanks for letting me join the forum. dale

I purchased a 400i 3 days ago, past owner was a family friend. Pick it up and seemed to run OK but did hesitate know and then. I got the machine home and the hesitation was very predictable. seems like after a run through the gears, slow down to turn around and it would have a large dead spot in the throttle, miss and then go fine. i have 2 quads and me and a buddy went out near to my property. a little off road and I needed full choke just to get home! carb was cleaned after initial hesitation was found. new intake tube was ordered due to cracks in it, i wrapped it in gorilla tape to see if it would help, no change. please helpl

I have a 06 Arctic Cat 500. The battery keeps dying on me and never seems to charge no matter how long or hard I run it. The battery shows 6.33 volts on my handy dandy voltmeter. With the battery unhooked I can pull start it and it runs fine even with the lights on. When I check the voltage on the unhooked battery wires it shows around 2 volts. Any ideas?
