  1. 2002 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO all stock. Was running ok. Up and down the street. Backfired a little. Took it out to play. While warming it up I forgot to turn on the fuel and it ran down and died. Turned on the fuel and fired it up. No real issues. Upon attempting to go uphill and then through light mud problems began. Became real sluggish and very little power. Started acting like it was starving for fuel. Then it died. During this time my battery was drained. Tried to pull start with no luck until moving/pushing the quad. Back at the shop I checked the fuel filter, fuel lines, carb bowl and all seemed fine. I loosened the fuel cap and it started right up. Let it run for a bit, then was throttling it. Up to 3/4 throttle all seemed fine. Above 3/4 multiple backfires and choking. Also backfired when letting throttle loose. Bike is idling rough. Closed choke and it immediately died. Would not start with choke closed. Took a few tries once choke was open again. Charging issue: Bike is draining battery during use. Battery recharges with battery charger very quickly. I would appreciate any and all help and advice. Thank you in advance for your time.
  2. :aargh:I need a little help figuring out a vavle tightening problem im having with the bike. I adjust the valves with a feeler gauge, start the bike and ride for about 10 minutes then its starts to run really rough, check the valves and their now too tight, so i adjust them again run the bike for about 5 minutes and the bike starts to bearly drives now, check the valves and their too tight again...Now this happens to both intake and exhaust at the same time and approx the same amount of change. Also sometimes i go to start the bike after it starts to run rough (adjusting the valves back out because now thier to tight) after a couple pulls and it doesnt start i go to check the vavles again and they are wayy too loose, causing the bike to not start..Some how the valve timing/gap keeps changing..Could this be a cam or timing chain problem??They both looked good after visual inspection.Cant figure it out and need some help, any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
  3. i have a 300 king quad im working on! it was brought to me for a carb cleaning! I have cleaned the carb it was plugged solid above the needle valve, as it was run out of gas. the fuel pump was also plugged and full of rust, so a new pump has been put on. after the carb cleaning it would only run with the choke on and pet cock on pre, now that the pet cock has been repaired and works properly, and I took the carb apart again and went over it. now it wants to flood the cylinder and plug. it also sprays a bit of gas out the intake side. it will start when the plug is dried out and the gas is burnt out of the cylinder, it will not rev out and only runs if you hold the throttle wide open! it has me baffled! also the vacuum at the top of the carb, should it go to the pump or petcock? if anyone has a downloadable manual for this bike it would also help! thanks in advance for an help
  4. I have a 1995 Magnum 425 4x4 which I purchased new. It has low mileage as it was used around farm until replaced by Ranger five years ago:biggrin: now my 11 year old son wants to upgrade from his Sportsman 90 and since the 425 is not used I let him have it as his since he puts many hours in the Ranger on the farm. Prior to parking it I was having issues with it going from reverse to forward. It will not fully engage and just click. I adjusted the linkage and it would go in forward fine but then not in reverse. If I adjust to go into reverse it then will not engage fully in forward. I do not mind putting some money in this machine for my son but have no idea what part may be worn out. Thanks for any help in advance.
  5. I have a 2000 arctic cat 500 that will only keep running when the start button is pushed in. Can someone please help me trouble shoot this for me please!
  6. Hi guys, I dont post here much but I figured I would pass on some info in the hopes it will help someone. I was having a problem with my KQ while plowing snow the other day. It would stall frequently while idling. Especially when stopping to switch to reverse or a forward gear. But it would run fine at anything above idle. My buddy came over to help me with it. We determined that it was starving for fuel or dirt was stuck in the carb somewhere. After confirming that there were no clogged screens, filters or vacuum leaks anywhere, we disassembled the carb and blew out all the passages with carb cleaner and compressed air even though everything looked spotless. Then we checked the pilot screw setting. Someone had already been in there as the plug was removed. We checked the setting and it was 2-1/2 turns out from the seat. We set it at an even 3 turns and put it all back together. It now runs flawlessly with no stalling! I believe it was just a bit lean on the low end. Anyway, hope this helps someone.:cheers2c: BTW, this is my first season with this (or any) quad and I am AMAZED at its plowing ability for such a small machine!
  7. First post! Lets get to business. I picked up an Arctic Cat 400 a few weeks back and I've gotten to the last few repairs before she will be ready to ride. I'm missing the prop yoke that comes from the gearcase but after checking arcticcatpartshouse.com I noticed the diagram differed from my actually set up. The opposite yoke is actually welded onto a 3 bolt flange for mine but they don't show that on their diagram. Also I noticed this intense side to side motion from the 4 link suspension. The rear axle has been replaced and the suspension redone but I don' think it was done correctly because it has about 4 inches of side to side play. In my mind it could be one of two things, the link brackets are in the wrong location or the bushing are completely shot. And my bike is also full time 4x4.... I didn't even know the 400 could come like that lol Thank you for your time =)
  8. Hi, I have an old '88 LT-4WD, and it has been sitting for about 3 years. A few months ago, I re-built it, including cleaning the carb, changing all the oils, re-did alot of the electrical, bled the brakes and cleaned out the master cylinder, replaced the rings, valve seals, oil seal, and gaskets. (among many other things) It ran fine for awhile, but now it has trouble starting. For awhile it started with full throttle and the enricher down, but not even that works now. I have spend many hours trying to start it, and havent had any luck. I replaced the spark plug, (it had good spark, but may not have under compresion) I also took the carb apart again to see if somthing plugged the jets already, but they were fine. I am just baffled. Any idea's would be appreciated. Thanks! Mike
  9. I can't get my artic cat to start, replaced solenoid & starter and the solenoid just clicks when you pull the brake handle and push the starter. Any Ideas as to what is wrong Thanks
  10. Hoping someone can help me out here. Just stumbled on this forum while searching for info on 2008 polaris sportsman starter issues. I've got a 2008 polaris sportsman 500 EFI. I'm currently putting in my 4th starter! Does anyone know why I'm going through so many starters?
  11. I am working on an early 90's Honda 300TRX 4WD. The problem is no spark. I have downloaded a manual but it has not helped yet. The problem is I have no voltage to the ignition coil. Any idea why there is no voltage from either the BL/Y or the G wire that connects to the ignition coil? Thanks in advance!
  12. I got a branch stuck up under my back axle on the right side and it sheared the boot closet to the tire off. The guy at the atv place said I'd have to take the boot off on the inside too, because that's the way they designed it. I'm hoping this is bull crap, and I only have to fix the one. Either way, I bought new boots and bands for each on the back right side. I need to buy a banding tool with a cutter next, to complete the ensemble. My question is, how hard of a fix is this? I was going to ask my uncle if he could do it. I know it'll be a greasy mess, but is it simple? I don't want it to get torn apart just to end up being hauled over to the garage. I want to get some use out of it this summer, since I spent a good penny on new front tires for it this spring, along with brand new oil/filter, and spark plug. It does me no good sitting in the barn looking dejected and forlorn.
  13. Been having trouble getting this quad to run. when its in neutral the reverse light is on too and will only start if you hold the reverse overide button and will run but only if you hold the starter button on while running soon as you let off either button it dies, and to start again you have to turn the ignition off and then back on. Also, wont have spark unless its in that gear but when it fires up it creeps backwards. if you jiggle the shifter (auto) and get the neutral light on it wont have spark only if the reverse and neutral light is on and you hold the override button down will it pop off. Any ideas anyone this is driving me crazy!
  14. Ok everyone here is my wonderful dilemma, any help or insight will be EXTREMELY helpful. 2010 Polaris Phoenix ridden by my wife. Last year we were riding and after going up some decent hills there was an awful smell of burning brakes. well since then she has a hard time going up almost any hill and really has to get a head start to get up the steeper ones. So today I took it all apart and found a lot of dust in there and blew it all out. I also notice the rear clutch is wobbly you can see I'm trying to show it in my video, also you can see in the video the atv seems to jerk a lot when I press the gas. Also in the video you can see when I squeeze the belt the rear shaft stays out and the belt stays loose, is this normal? It did not seem to be doing this as bad after I took the rear clutch apart and blew all the dust out. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em9rQi9Y98Q&context=C3cd7cf2ADOEgsToPDskLg5OOYuaBbnqRmkXcK5hqm]Video of ATV Clutch[/ame] Also I noticed the rear clutch seemed to have some excessive heat marks on the outer clutch half where the weights grab on to. The weights also look like they have some signs of excessive heat The belt doesn't seem to bad although it does seem a little bit shiny on the sides possibly meaning it has glazed over? The front clutch doesn't seem bad at all and the rollers looked in good shape So what I am wondering from the pics and the video is, what parts do you guys think need replaced? I am guessing the weights on the rear clutch need replaced and possibly the belt. What do you guys think? Thanks
  15. it is a 99 blaster just bought it tonight. The guy told me it has a brand new clutch in it. Ride rode it around for awhile now when you pull the clutch in it feels like there is nothing there and the clutch doesnt disengage. When you force it in it still goes so i dont think the clutch is out of it what could i do to fix this
  16. I have a 2008 Thundercat 1000. Last summer at less than 1000 miles I had a bearing go out and with it took out half the bottom casing. My repair shop found that this was of no fault of mine and yet, Cat will not warranty any of this work. The bill on this is well over $4500 and I don't think it's worth it. I am VERY disappointed with the Cat warranty service. I own a lot of Cat, my whole family rides Cat ATV's and snowmobiles...until we start trading them in for a brand that will actually warranty their product and care about their loyal consumers. I am so disappointed with Cat on this situation that I will NEVER buy another Cat ATV or snowmobile.
  17. I just recently bought a really clean 1995 King Quad (280cc) from the original owner with 991 miles on it. This is the model with the three shifters in the middle. Battery was dead, but pull started on the first or second pull each time. So today I installed a new battery, and I had no lights (no headlights, no neutral light, no reverse light) and no power to starter. First thing I checked were the fuses. BOTH of them were blown, so I replaced them (the extra fuses were still in the case, so I don't think this was an ongoing issue). With the fuses replaced, I have all lights, including neutral and reverse. I went to start it, and the starter first cranked really slow (like battery was low, which it isn't since I topped the charge off before I installed it), then cranked even slower, than just clicked each time I tapped the key. It almost started the first time I cranked it, but choke wasn't set right. I am thinking I have a bad starter, but wonder if there are any other suggestions out there. The bike was sitting indoors its whole life, but did sit for about a year without being started. Is there something that would blow BOTH the fuses (a 15amp and a 20amp)? The 20amp was working the dash pod lights and starter. Not sure what the 15amp was for. ATV runs fantastic, but I am not going to keep pull starting it. I already darn near lost a finger when I forgot to hit the decrompression switch LOL.
  18. Hello, I think I have the same problem JamesD wrote about. Quad starts, runs then just dies, not a fuel issue. not coil, etc. Believe it to be the Cdi box(Ignitor part no. 21119) This problem began as an occasional fault and grew till if you put the quad in gear it dies. Any input?
  19. Bear with me as I am at my wits end with this thing and about ready to seek therapy 96 Kodiak 400...owned 3 years Recently took carb in to have checked and cleaned as it was starting to idle rough til warm. Noticed that there was no gasket between carb and intake, just an O-ring;is this right? Also, is there no fuel filter on these machines? Waiting on carb to come back. Now the starting...Since I've owned this beast, it has rarely started (electrically) when temps get below 30* or so. Roll it, roll it, roll it...choke/no choke...etc,etc....nothing... Has new stator, newer battery (160 cca) and seems to have plenty of spark and have gone through all my connections. But as soon as I reach down and pull the cord...1 pull....VROOOOOM! What gives? I have heard that more fuel goes into the carb when using elec. start than when you pull it, but it has never flooded so don't know if I buy this one or not. So help please?...and maybe I won't need the couch Thanx...nscrfrk
  20. I recently replaced the rear shoes on the rear brakes, and it seems that I can't get them adjusted. It's just like when they went out, adjust them to the max. I put in the new springs etc but have to crank the adjusters on the rear axel all the way in and it's still not enough. Is there something I am missing? Any help would be great! Thanks
  21. Hi, New to the site, and atv's, but have been riding on 2 wheels forever. I just purchased an 07 king 450, and didn't notice til I got it home that 4 wheel is displayed on the gauge all the time. This is regardless of the position for the push button 4 wd. I haven't had the opportunity to put it up on blocks to confirm all 4 are turning. Is there a fuse or something that is causing the display to be constant ? This rookie is open to any and all advice. Thank you in advance.
  22. have a heavy modded 04 z400. just put a new battery in, turned the key on and the lights came on and then hit the start button. nothing and I mean nothing happens when I hit the start button. no clicking not starter motor nothing. any help suggestiins fixes would be greatly appreciated.
  23. ok so im in the army and today was the first time in 3 years that i tried to start my quad. i put fuel in it and it started to leak from a fuel line at the bottom of the carb. now of course it stopped when i turned the fuel off. now usually when i was riding it several years ago the only time it would leak would be when doing wheelies or whenever its on the back bumper. oh also its leaking from that line and not firing, its getting fuel from the main line and its getting spark. just not sure why the fuel is pooring out and its not firing up.
  24. Here goes, I purchased the quad at the beginning of the summer and it ran like a beast. I went to visit family and it sat in the garage for two months while i was gone. I had my cousin take it out once or twice a week to just putter around on so the gas wouldn't go stagnant in the tank or fuel bowl because i'm all to familiar with the horrors this can incur. so i get back from vacation and go to start it and it spins over for forever and doesnt star so i choked it which was something i never had to do before to get it to start. well it started and ran beautifully till i turned the choke off. well to make a long story short it wouldnt idle right and kept stalling so i adjusted the idle which had no affect. so i pulled the carb and cleaned it all out because id purchased a Jet kit while i was gone and wanted to install it. (please dont say you should have made it idle right before installing the jet kit because i knew that before i decided to do it anyway) so kit is installed and carb back together. wasnt all that dirty just some crap in the fuel bowl. so i spray all the jets out and put everything back together and fire it up. It idles perfectly now but wen you give gas from the idle position to about 1/4 throttle it stumbles and stutters and doesnt want to accelerate. Sometimes it stalls sometimes not. but from 1/4 throttle to redline it accelerates beautifully. also wen i let off the throttle while going down a hill and engine braking the exaust pops and sputters a bit. If anyone out there can help it would be much appreciated
  25. whats up guys i just got a question about a tach that i just bought. I kno the newer ds 650 bajas come stock with a tach but I bought a tach from autozone today that works with a distrubutorless ignition like every bike. The tach has 4 wires. a ground, power, wire for light, and the green wire which is what detects the rpms. i tried putting it EVERYWHERE on the ignition except any of the wires that come out of the cdi box. Anyone know where I should put that green wire? Or does anyone know where the wire for the factory tach on the ds 650 bajas go? please help i dont want the money I just spent on the tach to be a waste. I mounted the tach and everything
