  9. All, I have a friend that has (so he told me) an 85-86 Kawasaki Mongoose? He got it used from a sale. prblem is it needs a gas tanks (old one rusted out). Any leads on where to get one used????? Thanks in advance
  10. I have a 90 model 300 bayou bought new and taken very good care of. Always ran great and has given no trouble. It has developed a knock or rattle at low rpm when under a load. It starts fine and makes no noise at idle or when it is reved up. A frend that's a mechanic said it was the clutches so I had him put new ones in, didn't help. Carb has been cleaned, cdi box checked compression ok valves adjusted, stator checked and nothing helps. I don't know what else to look for. It sounds to me like the spark goes crazy and changes the timing, or like a bad fuel knock. This is a super good machine and has never been abused.I would appreciate it if someone could give me some ideas of what else to look for. Thanks....Kenny B

  16. I have a 1993 kawasaki bayou 400 and have just rebuilt the top end. New rings, cam, rockers, valves. I have minimal miles on the rebuild and have had to adjust the valves multiple times already. I had to do this with the other top end because the rockers and cam were worn to rat crap from the owner before me driving the bike without adjusting the valves. The only thing that i did not change was the valve springs and was wondering if that could be doing it.
  17. Hi, I'm having a serious issue with my 99 lakota. Earlier today I went to go for a ride and when I put it in gear it stalled out in gear for whatever reason, now it will not go back into neutral, when trying to get it out of gear a friend and myself pushed the quad back and fourth and I managed to get the gears to shift all the up to 5th but going back down it shifted really soft into 2nd and will not get to 1st or neutral. So I decided to tear apart the engine, I'm reading the Clymers manual to check for things that may be wrong, I'm thinking possibly the shifter and the star gear that shifts the gears might not be connecting correctly. to even look at that I have to remove both the primary and secondary clutches. The Clymers manual tells me to remove the primary by first removing the recoil starter and hold the rotor bolt to unscrew the clutch bolt. When I tried that the rotor bolt broke loose, so I decided to try to hold the rotor still and that is spinning. So now both of those ideas/methods have failed and I'm plum out of ideas on how to get that nut loose, then I'll have the same issue with the nut on the secondary clutch. According to Clymers the clutch nut is torqued to 107 ftlbs the only other thing I can think of is jamming the sprockets but thats not an option cause they will more than likely break a tooth or more. Anyone have any ideas on what I can try to do? The way it's looking now the bike is done Thanks
  18. I bought our son his first quad last week, we took it out today, rode for almost 2 hours no problem. We stopped at an overlook area and when we went to leave his bike wouldn't start. He was parked on a pretty steep incline, so we coasted it to a flatter area. Still nothing. looked around for a bit, tried a few mins later and it was fine... Rode another 5 mins and it just cut out, let sit for 5 and would start back up, did this maybe 3 more times and finally I got to tow strap and pulled him out. Got back home to untrailer it and it started just fine. I checked the plug, looked clean, checked the gap, made a small adjustment. Plenty of oil, coolant and fuel. I did run it out of fuel before this trip and had to switch to the reserve... I took the fuel filter out and blow trough it both ways. I drove it up and down the street and seams to run great... We are planning on taking a long trip in the morning, but dont want this happening again... I was looking at the carb and it raised a question for me. On the left side on the carb, near the top, by the CKG stamp is a nipple, looks like a hose should be attached there...there isnt. what goes there and could dust be getting in there and causing the stall? Like I said, I ran it up and down the street since I have been home, and it seams fine now, but then again it seamed fine for the first 2 hours we were out today too. Thanks for any ideas!!
  19. Hi, I'm wondering does anyone know what size socket is needed to get the ball joints out of the A frame? I've tried using a large adjustable wrench which just falls off of the 1/8" thick nut and the same went for a big pair of channel locks. I'm guessing you have to have a socket to turn it. Also when I removed the bolt from the lower ball joint there was a groove in the center of the bolt, does this groove supposed to be there? to me it looks like it's been worn out or grinded perhaps, I know on some cars the balljoint bolt is supposed to have a egg shaped groove in them to help keep the balljoint from freely rotating. Thanks
  20. anyone on here now have a 02 650 prairie??
  21. just put new valves in my 86 bayou 300 having a hard time setting the timing need some help or pics on the way to set up need help
  22. Curious what is the main function of the stator? I hooked an ohm meter to mine and the values are off from what is noted in the Clymer book. I am having some running issues with the bike but it's not too bad, mainly the bike does not like steep hills The hill it refuses to climb is (on a clock between 1-2 o'clock) it'll go about 1/2 way and lose all power. on the other had the hill next to it varies between 1-3 o'clock and is a little bit of a longer ride I can climb that with no problem. other than that after the bike has been rode for awhile say an hour or so I get some (but not always ) hesitation and slight backfiring in gears 1 & 2 every thing runs smooth in gears 3-5 I started checking all of my electrical system and so far the stator is the only thing with mismatched numbers. I have not tried the rectifier test yet for I don't have 3 12v batteries to run the test. The only thing I can figure that is wrong with the bike possibly causing my power loss is from the stator, but without knowing what it's actual purpose is, I can't say that for sure. Thanks BTW. the bike in question is a 99 lakota
  23. I have a late 90's Bayou 300 I use for hunting rig here in Bavaria Germany(I am stationed at the US base here). It starts and runs fine(great in fact), I can take off ride for 10,20,30 minutes, then it will just die(time is not the factor). It will restart fine, run for a second and die again, and again, then it will be fine for 10 or 20 or 30 minutes. Temperture not the issue, warm weather or cold doesnt matter. elevation not the issue, hills or flat not the issue. I removed tank, completely cleaned(yes some dirt in bottom. replace inline filter, carb seems good. It still feels like it is starving for gas when this happens, not an ignition issue. Do I need to pull tank again? pull carb and clean again? Thanks, Jack in Grafenwohr Germany

  25. I just picked up a clean '88 Tecate 4 that needs a little TLC, but I call all the suspected bad parts in trade with it. Any idea where I can find a .pdf service manual for this quad? All I have been able to find were for the Tecate 3's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....
