JUST GUESSING!!!!! 2) front cv boots cracked and need replace. ordered boots. when i take off wheel, brake cal., etc will the spline drive shaft just pull out from differential or is there a lock ring holding the inner knuckle to the diff. ? Any help will be much appreciated.
  2. Just joined the forum and was hoping to get some advise on a problem Im having with a new quad I picked up for my son. Its a 2003 LT160 Quadrunner. When I bought it the guy said it ran fine and was riding it when I got there. It ran great, good power, idled fine, etc. and restarted easily. when I got it home (90min ride) it would not start and killed the battery (which I knew was weak already) The next day I charged the battery up and still could not get it to start. I tried choke on and off and throttle one and off with no real difference . The very 1st crank it sounded like it wanted to fire, but after that it just turned (does not sound like it is firing). I removed the air cleaner and gave it a shot of starting fluid and it started right up and kept running great! Let it sit a week, got a fresh battery in it, topped off the fuel and got basically the same thing. 1st initial crank it tried to fire and nothing after that. Any ideas what might be going on that would cause it to not start unless I use Starting Fluid? So far I have not taken apart anything to troubleshoot. Thanks!
  3. My 500 Sportsman keeps draining battery and the winch does not work. Have checked all wires and no bad spots. Any suggestions on what could be problem? Starts with pull cord just fine and runs well.
  4. Having trouble with rear brake. Removed caliber, plunger was stuck, freed, bled brake, doesnt appear to be any air in line, still no brakes. (question) is there a seperate master cylinder and/or reservoir for rear brake or is one for ft brake also one for rear. If there is a rear master cylinder i would say its bad causing no brake. It applies a little bit, but not enough to do any braking. tks
  5. When I am riding the atv it is easy to shift through gears and find neutral, but when the quad is sitting still and idling it is a lot harder to shift through gears; it takes a lot more force and it is difficult to get into neutral. Also I can easily get the quad into reverse with it idling, but when i try to put it back it will only go halfway. I have to turn the atv off and then it comes out of reverse very easily. I herd this might be an oil issue. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions? Thanks
  6. hey there guys new here but have a problem with fourwheeler. been working on it for the last month. cleaned carbs changed plugs got it to start and now it will move just very slow no get up and go what so ever. was wonder if anyone could help me out.
  7. I have a 2002 Yamaha Bear Tracker 250, and the starter motor doesn't work. It never had any trouble starting last Fall, but unfortunately the machine had to spend the Winter outside (removed the battery though & left it on a battery tender). I put the battery back in a few days ago, but there's no response from the starter. The engine will start fine with the pull rope. I just replaced the starter relay (complete with fresh fuses), and the battery has a full charge, but the sucker still won't start--it doesn't even click. The green neutral light is lit, and the headlight comes on (but doesn't go dim when the starter button is pressed, like a bad starter or solenoid might cause). The engine kill/run switch works fine (after I manually start the engine). I've re-seated all the wiring connectors I can find, that appear to be associated with ignition. Not really sure where to go from here, it's driving me crazy. It acts like a bad switch (starter button), but I pulled the switch and it looked ok (contacts were not burned, dirty or corroded). I've pulled off the rear rack and fenders, so everything is exposed now. Also, there's a good size wiring harness that leads into the case behind the pull starter (it's attached to two multi-pin connectors at the other end, under the seat)--I assume that's where the starter and solenoid are? If so, do I remove the pull starter to get at the starter motor? One other thing--and I don't know if it's relevant--when I very first tried to pull start the machine, there was no resistance on the rope whatsoever (just rewind spring resistance from the rope pulley), I pulled a few more times, again without resistance. So I put the machine in gear, rocked it back and forth a few times and I was then able to pull start it. But again, the thing sat out all winter, so who knows... Can anyone offer any insight...please?
  8. 12. I charged my battery on a 87 yamaha timberwolf 250 and left the key on like a dummy. Now that i have a battery that is fully charged i have nothing when i hit the start button. I can just stator and have spark. I used to turn the key and have the neutral light. But no light and when i hit the start button i get nothing. What could my issue be?
  13. I have a scrambler 400 and the antifreeze was going through after one ride and then after awhile I smelt the antifreeze burning in the exhaust. So then I changed the gasket on the piston head.it hasn't fixed the problem. Now the spark plug get ruined after 3 times of starting the atv. But there is no coolant in the plug. Any suggestions
  14. I am having some touble getting my wife's 2003 250 Bayou running correctly. It first started with just random missing and crap when it was idling, then it would run good for about 5 minutes, and progressively miss worse until it wouldn't even move itself even WOT. Now, I can barely get it to run with the choke on. In its current state it will only idle with the choke full on, and only for maybe 10-20 seconds. If I touch the throttle it dies instantly. That to me sure sounds like fuel, but I am fairly sure the fueling is as close to factory settings and should run at least somewhat. The way this thing misses and randomly idles up and down, I thought for sure it is an ignition problem. But, I really need some more eyes on this. Possibly previous Bayou owners, because it has me stumped currently. Attempted cures Fuel -Pulled carb, completely dismantled, and cleaned every jet, orifice, carb body -New air filter -New sparkplug Ignition -Stator resistance tested good hot and cold -Coil resistance tested good hot and cold -Unplugged voltage regulator, no change in condition -Spark plug cap tested good -Crank Sensor resistance tested good hot and cold (with the specs from Kaw Manual) -New CDI $$$$ ahhh -Valve clearance also checked and it was spot on factory specs -Valve timing checked I think tomorrow I will check compression, and I guess for intake leaks. P.S- Need to get this running, wife is starting to repeat the Honda, " I wanna ride commercials" LOL Any ideas appreciated, Jeff
  15. I bought an 07 yfz 450 Bill Balance edition last november. It runs great, and has some mods that i cant quite figure out. I am pretty sure it has a big bore kit and a stage two cam on it. The problem is that the coolant leaks out of a tube that comes from the bottom of the right side of the ?crank case? (motor). It wasnt bad at all when I got it, but now that I have ridden it more, it starts to leak immediately upon starting. Even when its cold, and will continue to leak bad enough to empty the reservior under the seat in a matter of minutes. Any help would be great!
  16. i have a 2004 arctic cat 400 4x4 manual with 28 mudlight tires and the clutch is slipping. so i am going to replace the clutch but i dont know which one to buy. is there one that is better than stock for these bigger tires and if so which do you guys prefer. thanks
  17. I have a Problem. I rebuilt the Carburator on my 1995 Yamaha Kodiak 400. It Starts fine. It Idols fine. I can even putt around in 1st gear. But when I give it throttle and go it will want to die. Sometimes I can drive it and it is fine, BUT most of the time when I go and shift from 1st to 2nd and try to give it gas, it chokes out or looses power and then dies. I thought maybe the fuel line was too long because the gas is gravity feed so I shortened it. Still acts up. Is there an Air/Fuel mixture adjustment on Carb? I know of the screw at the bottom of the carburator but isnt that just idol speed adjustment? Please, Any Suggestions? Thank You
  18. Hello I have an '86 LT230s. recently I put a new top end in. Took it out for a test drive after the rebuild and the screw holding the cam chain tensioner was loose and fell out. When I stopped the motor I couldn't start again. Fearing the cam chain jumped the timing I pushed it back, reset the timing by using a screwdriver in the spark plug hole to determine the top end. Bike still wouldn't start where in the past it would start on the first kick. I was pretty confident I hadn't screwed up the timing so I pulled the spark plug to spray some starting fluid in the chamber and noticed the spark plug wasn't getting any spark. I tested the ground, the usual suspects. I had a donor bike so I replaced the coil and the CDI. Still nospark. So here is where is gets interesting. I take the stator cover off, wipe down the flywheel and coils and I guess what you'd call the magneto because they all had a light layer of oil on them. In order to take the stator cover off of course I had to drain the oil. So after wiping it down, putting the stator cover back on I get a strong spark. In my haste, I start the motor and let it run for about 20 seconds before I realize I didn't put the oil back in. I put the oil back in...and you guessed it - now I'm back to having no spark. I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace something - clearly I can't run it without oil. any ideas would be welcome.
  19. (My first post here) My wife has a 2010 TRX420 and last night it left her stranded !!*&$$#@!! I went out in the rain to retrieve it and could not get it to start (turn over). When the key is turned on I get the - symbol with no blinking. The PS light stays lit I can also hear the fuel pump kick in. I played with the emergency shifter and could never get it into gear or change its symptoms (start). After doing my internet research I see the - may also be connected to other issues. I have it back in the garage and charged the battery (you never know) to know avail. Before it goes to a dealer I want to try and see if someone out there has seen this issue and can get me pointed in the right direction and check some things out. I do have a service manual but could not find a matching trouble shooting description. Thanks!
  20. 21. Hi All, I have 1993 YAMAHA KODIAK YFM400 I have a problem that the battery fully discharged this happened the second time. the first time it happens I fund out that the wire of rectifier/regulator was disconnected,I connected the wire and replace the battery with a new one. the second time was last Friday after I already went out a week before and everything was fine,I checked before went out that the charging voltage was O.K. it was about 13.5Vdc and battery voltage was O.K. 12.5Vdc then when I was up hill the ATV was very hot it shut down in the middle,I was able to pull start it and continue. my questions are : 1.is their any connection between the motor hot and the battery shorted? maybe the rectifier/regulator is shorting or the A.C. magneto? but I could continue to ride 2.what do I need to check? what can I do in order to prevent it to happen again. Thanks in advanced Oren
  22. Hello everybody. I recently bought a '92 Polaris Trail Boss 4x4 250 for a project bike for my sons to ride. It's a 2 stroke air cooled motor, chain driven bike, and the previous owner had a shop bore over the motor .040 I was told. He also removed the front drive shafts, so it's basically a 2WD now. LOL. When I purchased it it was in pretty rough condition. Brakes didn't work, hard to start, rusty frame, chains were covered in muck, flat tires (wrong size too), torn seat, would grind when u put it in Drive, but when it did get it started it tore down the road like a bat out of Hell, so I knew I found a keeper. I have since fixed the brakes, replaced fuel lines, air/fuel/oil filters, tires, rebuilt the carb w/ a carb kit, replaced breather/vent/drain hoses on carb and reupholstered the seat, replaced the rear chain, and replaced spark plug and ignition coil. I use Bel Ray SL2 oil in her. I did not replace the battery. We ride this bike on trails and it runs pretty good now. Occasionally it will backfire (loud), but not every ride. Since the day I bought it it takes forever to start the engine. I mean like 30 seconds to a minute of trying to start her. I turn choke on, I flutter the throttle, and hold the START button. This is the only way she'll start. I hold the start button in for approx 10 seconds at a time, but I'm concerned I'm going to burn out my starter if this persists. Now after we ride the bike and she's warmed up she starts faster. Still not as fast of a start as my '98 Yamaha Big Bear 350 which immediately starts first try. It's stubborn on the FIRST start up. Now I live in Florida and it's always HOT when we ride, so even when the motor is cold it's enjoying 85-95 degree weather. Any thought or suggestions how to fix my quad's problem? Sorry, I mistyped the Title of this Thread. Polaris is a 1992 NOT a 1991
  23. Hello Everyone and thank you in advance for any advice you can provide. Also this is my first post. I have read some other posts regarding backfiring of this type of quad, but my issue adds another layer of complexity. My quad which I purchased from a gentleman who couldn't figure this issue out thought he had it licked, as well as I did. He had replaced the carb with a brand new one and still had the same issue. Here is the issue: Initially the quad ran great, didn't have any backfiring issues IF the ignition switch was turned all the way to the second click which is the lights on position. It would start and run fine. However, if the quad was run on the first ignition click - lights off, it would backfire and not run. So the solution to the problem was simply to run the quad with the lights on. Now, even if it is run with the lights on it backfires and sputters. It will not accept any throttle. It will backfire and surge if throttle is applied. Thank you for any advice.
  24. I am totally stumped. My kazuma will start just fine, but after warm up I can not open choke at all without it stalling. As long as I keep choke on it will run forever but really don't have full power. I have tried cleaning the carb completely, replaced air filter, etc but nothing helps. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  25. First a potentially important note - my electric start has not worked since I got the quad. I have not yet tried to track down what is wrong, because I bought this when it was warm outside and it always started up on the first or second pull. I never even have to choke or prime it, it just starts. Now that it's getting colder outside, I'm having a much harder time getting it to start. If I pull until I'm sweating, I can usually get it going. If I have one of my kids hold the throttle down a little it seems to help, but I can't do that and pull at the same time. I have tried combinations of choke and priming it, but they don't seem to make any difference. This leads me to a few questions: 1. Is there a recommended cold-start procedure? Choke and prime? 2. I notice that when I prime, some gas sprays out onto the engine. If I prime once I don't notice it, but if I prime 2 or 3 times I see it spray out. Maybe there is too much fuel in the carb? 3. It pulls pretty hard. Is there any kind of decompression switch that I am not seeing? The pull rope is probably original, but I have snapped it off twice at the handle in the last few months because it pulls so hard. Once it is warmed up, then it starts on the first pull every time with no problems at all. If I had a heated garage I'd just stick it in, but not going to heat an area just to keep this thing happy Thanks in advance!
