  1. I have scored a 1999 bayou 300 for free. It has been setting for years (2) but it was too good to pass up. I have found the usual problems, dirty tank ,clogged pitcock, gummed up carb. etc. I also noticed a oil leak. I lifted the front of the quad up high so I could get a good look at what is going on. I wiped down the case and found something im not sure about. I found a hole in the case at the front and down low. It does not look like it was hit or damaged from riding. The hole is about the width of a penny and about half an inch long, it is located where the case halfs are put together. I thought it could be a vent of some kind but to me it seems to be to low. It would get full of mud and water. I haven't put any money into the quad yet so now is the time to answer this question. Thanks for any help.
  2. I replaced the rear output shaft seal a year ago and it's leaking badly again. They are a pain to do because of the yoke being bolted to the shaft and the nut behind it. Has anybody seen this happen routinely to know if there may be something contributing to it like a bushing worn out on the output shaft that allows play? Also, any helpful hints as to how to get the nut off easier? Thank you.
  3. I got a branch stuck up under my back axle on the right side and it sheared the boot closet to the tire off. The guy at the atv place said I'd have to take the boot off on the inside too, because that's the way they designed it. I'm hoping this is bull crap, and I only have to fix the one. Either way, I bought new boots and bands for each on the back right side. I need to buy a banding tool with a cutter next, to complete the ensemble. My question is, how hard of a fix is this? I was going to ask my uncle if he could do it. I know it'll be a greasy mess, but is it simple? I don't want it to get torn apart just to end up being hauled over to the garage. I want to get some use out of it this summer, since I spent a good penny on new front tires for it this spring, along with brand new oil/filter, and spark plug. It does me no good sitting in the barn looking dejected and forlorn.
  4. i have a 1999 polaris explorer when it is at idle the secondary clutch turnes a bit causing it to grind when shifting in gear . the clutches apear fine any tips please
  5. I just removed the carb on my 220 Bayou to find out why the choke wouldn't work, and why it wouldn't idle. I had to remove the choke cable with the carb because the choke plunger is froze in its port. It must be corroded in, because pulling on the cable wouldn't break it loose. I'm feeding penatrating oil in and around the plunger in an attemp to free it up. Has anyone experienced a stuck plunger, and how did you get it out??
  6. I have a 1999 king quad 300. When you start it .it runs fine for a few seconds ,then really starts to miss. I found out that if you turn switch on over to headlight side, it will smooth out and run fine. I checked voltage at battery while running, and got 17.68 volts. could the regulator rectifier be the problem. also , if this is the problem,where is it located.
  7. My Prarie 400 runs all day in low range, but jumps out of high range engagement as soon as I accellerate. Where should I start??
  8. it is a 99 blaster just bought it tonight. The guy told me it has a brand new clutch in it. Ride rode it around for awhile now when you pull the clutch in it feels like there is nothing there and the clutch doesnt disengage. When you force it in it still goes so i dont think the clutch is out of it what could i do to fix this
  9. just sold our polaris xplorer to friends, they called last night to say they can't get it to start. they installed a new battery and changed spark plugs. i'm wondering since it sat for almost 2 years what could be wrong with it. it does also need a new gasline replaced, would this prevent it from starting possibly?
  10. i have a 600 grizzley and it will not fire but i have fire to the cdi box and a new coil off another 4 wheeler that works but i can not get fire to the spark plug and all the fuses are good. can someone give me some advice? thanks

One of the struts appears to have leaked out all fluid and only the spring is providing suspension. looking at the online parts list it was not clear if the full strut can be replaced without extensive teardown of the front end. Questions: can the struts be overhauled and would it be best to have it done by an authorized repair facility (yes, slightly challenged...) or does it need to be replaced? Would assume I would want to replace or overhaul both sides, concur?? Thanks!
  12. I have no problem making a snorkel for the intake. When I see pics of other ATV snorkel kits, they have 1-2 other pipes coming up. What are these for? Can someone tell me what to expect with electronics, flooding, etc? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
  13. My Quad, starts fine, takes off fine, but when I get 3/4 to full throttle it spits and sputters. The carb has been rebuilt, stage 1 carb kit with filter, and RCM steel exhaust. I have a manual for this model, and I'm fixing to go down the long list of ELEC. tests. ANY SUGGESTIONS???????
  14. Will a lower a-arm from a 1997 350 big bear fit a 1999? I tried ordering a kimpex after market a-arm for my bike but they only list up to a 97.Is there any difference in the front end of these two Atvs. Thanks Caper.

  16. I just picked up this project for my son. It has been sitting up for a year. I have drained the fule tank and replaced the battery. I can get it to turn over it i keep the starter engaged. It will fire and try to run but blows white smoke. I am thinking the rings are seized. any suggestions?
  17. Hello, I am new to this forum and I was recently given a 1999 Sportsman 500. It has been sitting out in the weather for approx. 2-3 years I guess. I do not know much about Polaris 4 wheelers and would like a little help as to what people think should be checked, rebuilt, or refilled. The previous owner said that it was running fine when it was left out by his brother. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am mechanically inclined and will be doing most repairs on my own. However, if something is too technical, I have a friend that is an ATV mechanic and he could help out as well. Thanks, NB16

I have a 1999 artic cat 300 4x4 and was wondering how i could get some more speed out of it, i havent found any pipes will fit, i do have a uni air filter, it works great in 4x4 for bushwackin. but not much on the speed and touque department, except in low it has good power thanks! Also is their anything that i can do to make it more mud friendly? Larger Tires? Lift kit? thats what i really bought this machine for mudding and deep water, is thier any way to build or buy gaurds for the front diff so when stuff hits it it dosnt break somthing.
  21. I just acquired a 99 blaster. I put new break pads on the back, after I put the pads on the breaks are locked up pretty good. Any thoughts on the cause. I am a little frustrated. Marc
  22. as everyone with a king quad knows you need to be in neutral to start. i want to know how to make the quad so it can start in gear (1st, 2nd....). is it as simple as creating a short on the switch??? i have done the diff-lock mod and its amazing. i am getting tired of when ever i switch off the quad in gear, i have to find the neutral again and that involves rocking the quad forward and backward for it to down shift. thanks
  23. I have a 1999 KQ300 thats been sitting for about 3+ years while I've been away at school. So in the last couple weeks I've been trying to get it running again for a local event called mudfest. I dropped in a new battery, pulled the carb out and cleaned it up a little, changed the fluids and put in a new plug. After all was said and done, the bike runs, but not quite at 100%. I had it going this whole weekend and it never completely quit on me, but it will not idle, and I cannot take the choke all the way off other wise it starts to misfire. I'm a fairly competent mechanic, but I'm not too familiar with this bike, so I was wondering if anyone knew of some if the more common issues with these bikes. I read through some of the other posts on this forum, and tried a few of the suggestions, but it still is running a little rough. Oh, and for what its worth, when I first started to mess with the bike, I noticed there was some sort of fluid all over the head of the motor, it looked more like oil but Im not absolutely sure.   24. Alright I'm new to the site and pretty baffled about my Polaris. I bought it this summer, rebuilt the top end, everything was going good until I ran it out of gas. Added fresh gas some weeks later and it wont start. I've been thru the carb, cleaned every nook and cranny in it, new spark plug, and still nothing. The plug is wet after trying to start the quad so its getting fuel, I have good spark and it doesnt even try to start. I looked at the reeds today and everything looked fine none that are broke or warped. I havent tested compression with a tester but I know i cant hold my finger over the spark plug hole it will blow it off. Before I cleaned the carb it would backfire now it doesnt so I'm at a witts end. Any Ideas??? Thanks in advance. Dont know if this matters but the elec start doesnt work so I'm trying to pull start the quad. Also wont start with starting fluid either.
  25. I can't adjust the linkage so that I can shift from forward to reverse. I can either adjust it to shift from neutral to forward or neutral to reverse. What is it that I might be missing?
