  1. Hey guys new to the forum but I gotta question. Ive owned this recon for 11 years never skipped a beat until I sunk it on accident a couple years ago. I changed the oil n such when it happened but after that, the recon sat in storage for 2 years since ive been in college. Well dad wants it sold so im tryin to get it back into shape repainting racks, fixing breaks and gettin it to run right. I just rebuilt my carb and got it absolutely spotless runs good now! My problem is the bike smokes pretty good and i can hear a ticking noise in the head. Now the tick im almost positive is just a valve adjustment which I can do BUT the smoke... Ive heard the most likely culprit is the rings which from what ive read doesnt sound like a big deal to replace? What all is involved in replacing the rings, cost, how difficult, ect. any pics would be great as well. Thanks, Dakotah

  3. i have a problem with my bike and woundering if anyone can help me out. the bike is a 1999 300 king quad 4x4 and it starts fine but after a min it starts to rev up at a high rpm.any idieas
  4. I have a 1999 arctic cat 500 4x4. We was riding and the radiator fan fuse popped and burnt the wires. So i pulled it back home and replaced the fuse and fixed the wires on it. Now it will not start but the spark plug fires. So i thought perhaps a wire got burnt in half. So i went through all the wires and all of them checked out good. Still couldn't get it to crank. So i hooked a rope up to it and pulled it and put it in gear and it fired up. But soon as you stopped pulling it the 4-wheeler would shut off again. So i tried to see if you could test the CDI and voltage regulator but i couldn't find any info on that. Anyone have any info on what they think it could be or how to check those two boxes? As i am running out of options here and still can not get it to crank and run.
  5. Ive got a 99 450s the top end was rebuilt about 2-3 years ago and ive had a slight oil leak for a while, but its gotten worse. I cleaned the motor up lastnight to see if I could tell where it was comin from, topped it off and went to do some food plot work on my hunting lease. all seemed fine untill it got hot enuff for the fan to kick on I ran it for about 10-15min after that and stopped to take a break and to let it cool off. I checked the oil again before gettin back to work and there was barely any on the stick, toped it back off and done it again, let it cool down a 2nd time and ran it about 2miles back home... any chance stop leak may help or atlast slow things down untill I get my plots done and then replace the gasket? what all am I lookin at as far as changing it out? Is it as simple as pull the top end off, clean the old off, replace and put back together or is it more involved? Ive never done any atv motor work thats why I ask....sorry for the dumb questions but thanks for the help!
  6. HEY ALL, NEW TO THE SITE..MY POLARIS XPLORER 400 REAR BRAKES WONT WORK...JUST FILLED WITH FLUID BUT STILL NOTHING...I PURCHASED THE QUAD USED RECENTLY AND GOT A DECENT DEAL ON IT... I OPENED UP THE BRAKE FLUID RESEVOIR AND REALIZED IT WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY. WHEN i RODE IT I REALIZED THAT THE FOOT PEDAL HAD ABSOLUTELY NO FUNCTION AT ALL. YOU CAN PUSH IT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BOARD AND THE QUAD STILL DOESNT EVEN THINK OF SLOWING DOWN. IM THINKING PADS BUT NOT ENTIRLY SURE JUST THOUGHT ID GET ANOTHER OPINION...THANKS IN ADVANCE
  7. Suzuki 500 4x4 quadrunner Quad misfires, black smoke, runs rough. Dies at idle. Checked jets in carb, flooding, found bad needle, replaced it, readjusted float, Replaced o ring gasket at intake, checked boot, checked coil and found weak spark. Any ideas? Thanks, John
  8. Hi, I'm having a serious issue with my 99 lakota. Earlier today I went to go for a ride and when I put it in gear it stalled out in gear for whatever reason, now it will not go back into neutral, when trying to get it out of gear a friend and myself pushed the quad back and fourth and I managed to get the gears to shift all the up to 5th but going back down it shifted really soft into 2nd and will not get to 1st or neutral. So I decided to tear apart the engine, I'm reading the Clymers manual to check for things that may be wrong, I'm thinking possibly the shifter and the star gear that shifts the gears might not be connecting correctly. to even look at that I have to remove both the primary and secondary clutches. The Clymers manual tells me to remove the primary by first removing the recoil starter and hold the rotor bolt to unscrew the clutch bolt. When I tried that the rotor bolt broke loose, so I decided to try to hold the rotor still and that is spinning. So now both of those ideas/methods have failed and I'm plum out of ideas on how to get that nut loose, then I'll have the same issue with the nut on the secondary clutch. According to Clymers the clutch nut is torqued to 107 ftlbs the only other thing I can think of is jamming the sprockets but thats not an option cause they will more than likely break a tooth or more. Anyone have any ideas on what I can try to do? The way it's looking now the bike is done Thanks
  9. I have a 1999 polaris sportsman and it shuts off when it gets hot and will not restart till it completely cools. I have changed the coils and checked the plug and it gets no fire when hot. Any ideas?
  10. Does anyone know where I can get a PDF shop manual for a 1999 SUZUKI LT-F500F VINSON 500 LTF500. I need to chance the fluid in the front and read differentials and I am not sure what to use. I see how to drain them but I am not sure about where to refill. Thanks, Shane
  11. Hi, I'm wondering does anyone know what size socket is needed to get the ball joints out of the A frame? I've tried using a large adjustable wrench which just falls off of the 1/8" thick nut and the same went for a big pair of channel locks. I'm guessing you have to have a socket to turn it. Also when I removed the bolt from the lower ball joint there was a groove in the center of the bolt, does this groove supposed to be there? to me it looks like it's been worn out or grinded perhaps, I know on some cars the balljoint bolt is supposed to have a egg shaped groove in them to help keep the balljoint from freely rotating.   12. Hi all, I took my driven clutch appart because it would not open and close with rmp increase and decrease. The buttons are bad and i will replace those. It came appart fast and I am unsure what holes the srping was in. There is a chart in the book that lists from soft to hard for the settings but was curious if anyone has played with these settings and how much of a difference it has made?
  13. Curious what is the main function of the stator? I hooked an ohm meter to mine and the values are off from what is noted in the Clymer book. I am having some running issues with the bike but it's not too bad, mainly the bike does not like steep hills The hill it refuses to climb is (on a clock between 1-2 o'clock) it'll go about 1/2 way and lose all power. on the other had the hill next to it varies between 1-3 o'clock and is a little bit of a longer ride I can climb that with no problem. other than that after the bike has been rode for awhile say an hour or so I get some (but not always ) hesitation and slight backfiring in gears 1 & 2 every thing runs smooth in gears 3-5 I started checking all of my electrical system and so far the stator is the only thing with mismatched numbers. I have not tried the rectifier test yet for I don't have 3 12v batteries to run the test. The only thing I can figure that is wrong with the bike possibly causing my power loss is from the stator, but without knowing what it's actual purpose is, I can't say that for sure.   14. I have just bought this and don't have any problems but the idle is really high then it is in neutral and i don't know where the idle adjustment is. I would also like to know what kind of oil i should put in this ATV because he gave me a oil filter so i could change the oil and i forgot what oil he told me to use.
  15. Hi guys, I just bought a new starter solenoid (part # 4011335) for my Magnum 500 and it is a little different from the old one. It has two posts, a top one and a bottom one. I just need to know which one gets the red wires and which one gets black, or does it matter? Thanks for any input! -JerryC

  17. Hello Riders. I know that this is a silly ??? I have a Yamaha 1999 Grizzly 600. How fast will it run and what would be a safe speed to ride a long way on a good forset road. My unit is in good shape and it does noe wolble at speed. Thanks Chuck
  18. Hey There! My husband brought home a 1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 recently. The problem with it is it keeps popping out of high gear. It does not pop out of low or reverse. Can anyone help me with this?? Thanks Mammy:aargh:

I have a 1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 ,Last summer I went on an ATV run of about a hundred miles, Towards the end of the ride I noticed the motor was starting to knock and it did not seem to have much power,especially upon acceleration. When I got the machine home I had the cam replaced which cured the knocking but when I test drove it at the shop the power still was not right...actually not any better than before the repair. I told the mechanic about it and he messed around with it for a few minutes and determined that the air box was not sealed properly and put a new gasket in. The problem seemed to be solved but since I got it home the problem has resurfaced. I tested the compression ,It's fine and,replaced the plug and fuel filter to no avail..The problem is not constant ,sometimes it runs great. What do you think is the problem ?????.OK tomorrow I will probably take the carb off and clean it but, I will try to explain exactly what happens ...It starts and idles fine but when I push the throttle, wheterh it is in gear or in neutral the engine does not snap up the RPMs quickly ,it seems doggy and will not rev to the limit like it used to ,..When riding it has no power from a dead stop and will reach 30 mph or so slowly it will eventually get up to about 45 mph but it takes a long distance to do this , when it was running good I could get to 55 mph in about 10 seconds,.. now it takes all day to just get to 45 mph..I just want to be sure You guys have all the info you need before suggesting I tear the carb apart.
