  1. Having a strange issue with the headlights on my Kodiak. Noticed there are no high beams, and when I switch back to low beam the lights stay off. The low beams will come on, only if I go from off to low. This is what I have going on: From Off to Low - Lights Work From Low to High - No lights From High to Low - No Lights Back to Off and to low - Lights work again. Just curious if anyone has had a similar issue, or where I should start troubleshooting.
  2. I am assuming it is leaking from the overflow. Took the carb apart and it is clean inside. Put it back together and gas leaks out the host at the bottom. Tested to make sure the drain screw is not the problem when I had it off.
  3. I have a 2001 Yamaha Kodiak 400 (YFM400FWAN©) On a recent hunting trip a problem popped up and I hope someone else has experienced this, so that I can learn from them instead of going on my own hunt for an answer. The Problem: On cold days (sub 25 degree) I choke the Kodiak and it starts instantly. It revs up and runs on "high idle" without any problem. However when I return the choke lever to its "normal" position the ATV continues to run and a very high idle. I cant put it into gear until the idle comes down, which it doesn't. In order to use the bike I have to shut it off and when I restart it I must place it into gear before the engine gets a chance to rev up. It then returns to a normal idle and the machine behaves normally. This only happens on real cold days but it is a problem I want to fix. Can anyone offer some help?
  4. Had a 2003-2004 400 outlander given to me. Bike sat for 3 years. Drained tank and filled with fresh gas. Cleaned fuel lines and carb. eng comp 127. checked for spark with plug out and is nice and blue. Cranks but does not start. Fuses ok but inst cluster displays "fail" any ideas:aargh:
  5. i have a 2001 yamaha big bear 400 that i will be snorkeling i was wondering what size jet to put as main jet can i buy a stage 1 jet kit on ebay and that work ?? thanks
  6. after working great all weekend today my big bear 400 wont start. I noticed a strong gas smell, took cover off air box and found 2 inches of gas in the box. I figure this has to be a carb problem but hoping someone can pinpoint exactly what to look for/replace. thanks!
  7. I recently purchased a 2005 Suzuki LTZ 400, for the first few days it ran like a champ but now when it gets hot, no matter what you do, it will stall out when you stop. Even going from 2nd or 3rd gear it still stalls out. It still runs perfect, it just stalls when I hit the breaks (hard or soft). I don't know much about quads so I could use some help.
  8. I bought a 2004 Eiger 5 speed. The guy I got it from let it sit 3 months in the winter. It would start up but not idle and die out when you revved it up. I took carb off soaked it, cleaned jets, reset floats, new gas. It would sart but flood after a few seconds. Tore it down again. Now it won't start. Gas runs out the vent tube!!!! Sometimes the plug is wet sometimes not. Have good consistent spark and the flywheel had been changed out. Any ideas?! Is it a vacuum issue? Maybe carb boot between carb and head? And I checked the fuel flow from the pitcock so I don't believe that's the issue.
  9. I just bought a 2000 explorer 400 4x4 from a guy @ work. He told me that he was running it the last time he had it out and it quit on him. He said that he changed the spark plug but just couldn’t get it to run again. When I got it home I tore all the plastic off it to make it easier to work on and get to everything. It seems to be getting spark but won’t fire even after putting some gas in the jug. He told me that he recalled that when this all started he recalls that it overheated too. Doesn’t seem to be any coolant in the radiator either. Oh yeah, it seems to have good compression too. I put my thumb over the cylinder port and cranked it and it’s hard to keep my thumb over the hole. I also pulled the flywheel to make sure that the woodruff keys was ok. There was some liquid (seemed to be coolant) in the recoil housing too, if that tells a story too. I also checked the crankcase dip stick to see if was overfilled but its not.
  10. I have a 2007 honda rancher that bog down the other day and smoke a little after but now runs ok . What could it be . It has 97 compression and it only smoke a little while .
  11. I am looking for a good not to expensive winch for my yamaha 400 grizzley. All I am going to use it for is to raise and lower a snow blade 6-10 inches. I have been looking all over and many seem to feed back out a couple inches after feeding the cable in and I do not need that to happen. Any ideas on a winch out there?

  13. Hi, I have a Big Bear 400 that Im working on for a friend. It starts, runs for a bit, then suddenly stalls. It will do it if its idling, or if Im driving it. The longest Ive gotten it to run is about 20 seconds. It will start back up after a few pulls (battery is shot, waiting for a new one to come it) but then will stall again. Does this sound like a carb issue or is something else going on? Thanks!

  15. I have a 400 cc roketa 4X4 that the cvk carb runs gas out the aircleaner . I have reset the float and put a new carb on but it still overflows. It has an electronic plunger on the top of the carb that I don't know anything about so if anyone has had this problem or knows how to repair it ???????
  16. I purchased my kodiak earlier this winter. It was a being stored in a heated shop however when I went to pick it up, it was sitting outside in -20 and the throttle was froze shut. The bike seemed very clean with no mud on it so perhaps the PO washed it before storing it and some moisture got in the cable. My shop is unheated but in an effort to get it going, I made a little tarp tent and stuck a construction heater under it. Throttle cable came free and the bike started up an ran fine. 2 months later the bike is just sitting in my shop not being used. The throttle still freezes shut when the shop is cold but today, it was warm enough that it was free. But I wonder if there is an issue with the choke cable sticking? The bike seems to flood and won't start. I built my tarp tent again and warmed up the quad with the heater. Not sweltering hot but warm. I could get the bike to fire a couple times but then it seemed to flood again and wouldn't start. So is there something causing the choke not to work related to the cold? The lever seems to flip up no problem but not sure if it is doing something on the carb end causing it to flood and not start. The plug is new, spark good, and a nice mist of gas comes out of to piston when it's flooded. I don't want to tear into things if I just have to wait for warmer weather but would still like to get some early spring riding in. Any help?

We'll folks I have a 2006 artic cat 400 4x4, here while back the fuel pump went out and I thought it may be a bad plug wen I went to pull it out, it broke, and trying to take the easy way out I got it out with a ease out:/ we'll to make a long story short I started the bike after doing a gravity feed set up ( haven't replaced fuel pump) and it was tapping real bad, then stopped and ran perfect, then would start a lil then stop and run perfect......... Any suggestions maybe porsolin or the firing pin may have fell in ??? But why would it clear up?...... Rekon I need to pull the head? What kind of Job is that, I'm not really up to date mechanic, any options would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys question, I recently bought a 98 Honda Forman 4x4 that has a non digital speedometer, the problem is the speedometer lights up and the little green light above the hour reeder (i think it is) blinks but the mph needle doesn't move when I'm driving and the trip meter doesn't count either. None of the dials move but its lite up. I was wondering if it is a cable rusted maybe or a sensor wheel stuck or broken that I have no idea where it's located can anyone help me diagnosis the problem so I can try to fix it Thanks for viewing this post! Please share any knowledge!

Dont kno if i would exactly call it a missfire but sometimes when i fist get on my quad( after letting it warm up with choke for five mins ) and rip away usually right after shifting it will miss 1 spark blow that air/fuel into exhaust and backfire then run normal sometimes itll do this 2-3 times aways in the beginning of a ride usually if i warm it up a little less then usual, just curious what would cause this. It did it since i got the quad 6 months ago and theres a different head cyl. And piston in it now...also what would cause oil to stop flowing into a head??? Or did i screw something up??? On the new head i noticed oil poors out behind cam sprocket on the old one it didnt
  23. The wife and I are looking at getting a Ranger next spring. Most of the duties for the Ranger will be, plow the drive, haul some fire wood, use the dump bed for garden waste hauling, haul some mulch and dirt as needed around the yard. I have been looking at the specs for both and here are my thoughts, please give me your opinions. -I like the fact the 500 is fuel injected. I like the fact that the 500 has ith insterments. -The 400 is cheaper, don't really need the extra horse power. I really don't plan on any trail riding, if I do it will be limited. Just want a good, dependable machine. as of now, I am leaning tward the 500 if nothing else than the F.I.
  24. Hi I have a 1998 Kodiak 400 that locked up the bottom end. 2 actually.... I am looking for used engines or parts and I have run into some questions. The local shop isn't so helpful. What years are the same? I have a 2002 400cc motor in a box already. Could a 350cc from the same year bolt in there? I have a wrecked one in hiding out back. I work on a ranch we have several of these monsters. All have a shton of miles on them. These things are easy to work on and work with. We plow with them. Maintain power lines and fences from them. Any info would be really helpful.. Thanks
  25. first off i have 2 parts bikes a 97 kodiak 400 and 97 wolverine 350 and a running 02 big bear 400......i just replaced my piston, cyl. and head with the one off the kodiak 400 but ripped my carb joint(from carb to head). my question is can i use the wolverine 34mm? carb on my big bear that now has a 33mm. they are 2 totally different carbs...wolverine stock has main 145 and big bear has 110 main forget what the pilots are....im thinking it should work but wanted to be sure. the reason i wanted to use that carb is it has a different style joint and i have the joint and its in good condition. any help would be aprreciated thnx
