  1. 2005 Kodiak 450 Have had this quad a little over a year now. Bought used with 700 miles. Always had a tiny high idle after being revved up and after about 15 seconds it would go down to normal idle. Up until now we have completely cleaned the carb, all ports, jets, float and needle, new spark plug and have also adjusted the intake and exhaust valves. Intake was where it should be right within specs, exhaust was at the looser part of the spec so we tightened it up to the middle of the specs. It runs a lot better after all that, but there is still a tiny little bit of high idle after being revved and the rpms fall back down, maybe 3 seconds if that. I took the spark plug out and it is basically white, like its burning a lean mixture, its not burning a nice golden brown color on the plug. I would like to start with the fuel screw to try adjusting it a little to see if it would help, but I cant seem to find it. Could anyone give me some help of where its at and if its recessed in the carb a little? Has anyone else had this problem? What do yall advise to do?
  2. I bought my wife an 07 450 KingQuad two years ago for her birthday. This year I bought an 07 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO from a buddy who did not ride any more. It was neat to test these two head to head. I thought I would post my findings as well as the feelings from seveal other folks who rode both back to back. First, at time of this comparison the Suzuki had apx. 140 hours, the Polaris had 19. Some might say that the Polaris was not broke in yet, but my buddy rides them hard and I am sure abused it some, so I know the rings were seated and the motor loosened up. So here goes. Please remember these are mine and my wifes feeling mostly with other members of my family thrown in. Yours may differ. The Polaris has a MUCH softer ride then the Suzuki. This is good and bad. On flat hard ground the Suzuki will out handle the Polaris hands down. The Suzuki feels like a sport quad and the Polaris like you are floating with poor feed back from steering input. The Suzuki Corners sharp and crisp, the Polaris seems to plow through the corners. On hard take offs and stops the Polaris really has a lot of body role from suspension movement. The Suzuki not near as much. In a drag race, the Suzuki is faster at least up to 40mph. This was tested severl times with different riders and the results were always the same. The Polaris was not left in the dust, just beat by 1 or 2 quad lengths. At idel the Polaris is smoother. Both quads were smooth throughout the rest of the throttle range. The Polaris is louder than the Suzuki both in exaust and engine noise. The Suzuki has a louder clutch noise. This may be due to the quieter engine so the clutch can be heard better. Let me add that both quads are fuel injected. The Suzuki instruments are electronic and the Polaris has a standard Speedo. The Polaris is easier to toggel through several different guages like tach, odo, hour meter. This all done by way of the reverse over-ride button. The Suzuki has two buttons for trip on the speedo face with no tach avaluable. I give the edge to the Polaris in the instrument department. The gear shifter is easier to use on the Suzuki as it is very easy to shift with your left hand. The Polaris is harder and done with the right hand. The Suzuki does not have the Park function the Polaris has and you must lock the right hand brake on for a barking brake. Both quads have HI, Low, Neutral, Reverse. Now the brakes. The Suzuki uses two hand levers and one foot pedal. The left hand and right foot pedal operate the rear and the right hand operates the front. Polaris uses the left hand to operate all brakes. The first time I needed to panic stop, I almost went into the trees on the Suzuki. The Suzuki has an enclosed rear brake that is inside the axel housing. Sounds like a great idea but I have never had a problem with open disks like the Polaris. The Polaris will stop on a dime. For me the Polaris wins the brake contest hands down. Another note is that the Suzuki comes with ADC standard. Polaris only offers it on the Deluxe Sportsman. Ergos are similar with the Polaris having slightly taller handle bars. Both seats are all day comphy. The Polaris has flat foot boards while the Suzuki has raised foot pegs. I would imagion you get better grip with the Suzuki, but the Polaris is more comfortable and I have never slipped even in thick mud on the Polaris. Both bodies seem similar in with in the seating area. To me, too close to call for a better or worse. Storage is mixed as well. The Polaris has the front storage under the rack and a bigger rear center compartment. The Suzuki has a dry storage bin in the right front fender but is is on the small side. The rear compartment is big enough for most things we carry. Polaris wins this area. Factory tires on the Polaris are larger and have deeper lugs. Suzuki seems to still do fine in the mud and loose stuff. Ground clearance is similar. Also both quads have 4 wheel independent suspension. Now for some real world experiance on the trails. Most of the trails we ride are deep wods with some pipe lines thrown in. We don't race and really just enjoy the ride. The Suzuki is by far on the Sport side of Sport Utility abd the Polaris is on the Utility side. In the woods, the Polaris is like a Cadilac, the Suzuki like a Camaro. All depends what you want out of a quad. I would not trade my Polaris for the Suzuki because of the smooth ride and great brakes. My wife likes the Suzuki and the ADC gives her much more confidense going down hills. If I rode high speed trails, I might go for the Suzuki because of the stiffer suspension and better handeling. The rougher the trail gets, the more the Polaris seems to shine. These are both fine machines and you can't go wrong with either of them. Again your opions may differ, these are mine.
  3. My 07 Ltr 450 starts but wont stay idleing.My bike had sat for a long time and stupid me did not drain gas out of quad for storage. I took out gas before starting, and put in new gas. Old gas was sticky looking or varnished. Do you think my fuel filter is gunked up and fuel is barely passing thru to the injectors. I hope the crappy gas did not get by filter and gunk up my injectors. I want it to run like a champ like it did before 8 months ago.. HELP.. Any wisdom would help greatly.

  6. I'm trying to check the valves,it just wont run right. I line up the crank mark,then check the cam sprocket mark,cam mark is at 8 o'clock. Is this correct ? Sure does'nt seem right. The owner (my friend) has not bought a S/M ,so I am checking here. Any help ? Thanks.
  7. My 06 Sportsman is crapping out (like starving for fuel) on moderate to long uphill pulls in high range when over half throttle. If you back off and feed the throttle slowly it will run correctly for a while then start again. I've replaced the spark plug, air cleaner is clean, carburator has been removed and all jets and air passages have been cleaned. The float is parallel with the float bowel surface when held upside down, and I've done the clear line in the bottom drain fitting with the engine running and the fuel level is at the top of the float bowel this is the only thing I'm not sure of, is this correct? New fuel pump, no vacuum leaks that I can detect, fuel filter has been replaced, the ECU was replaced under recall just before I started riding it. If I run it on the flat and load the engine with the brakes it doesn't crap out just keeps pulling. If I'm in low range it doesn't do it. I'm out of idea any new ones out there? Sorry for the long ramble but tried to give as much info as I have. Thanks, Pete
  8. Hey does anybody know anything bout proper size jetting for a 2008 Yamaha YFZ450? My lil cousin bought it 2 years ago and with the new purchase price has dumped a total of $16000 on this thing! He races it locally so had to remove a bunch of stuff to make it race ready! He didn't do anything to the internal motor to add power, just put on a velocity air filter with no lid on box, scary fast plate for stock carb, and full FMF pipe. All the money invested is in suspension, tires, carbon fiber rims, etc! Somebody messed with his carb and he can't figure it out to get it running again! Our elevation is 550ft up to 1500ft. What pilot jet, main jet, and needle position sounds good to run! Dynojet kit on hand! Thanks guys!
  9. its an 05 kodiak 450. i was going across a pond, i started off going across it just buy the bank, and slowly got to the point where it was inches under the headlights. i said what the heck i can go a little farther. as soon as i got to the middle, it dropped about 6 inches and the front went under, so i wheelied it. right rear wheel lost traction and it headed for the middle. i tried to get it in reverse and back it out but it was one of those times where it wouldn't just go in R. the whole quad leveled out, and intake went under. i pinned it until it sucked water in (heard this was the best thing to do so it dosent suck water back in on last stroke) and it finally died. i got off of it and let the rear float up so the intake was out of water, it turned over for about 5 seconds and finally started. i revved it for a little getting some of the water out and i finally reached over put it in 4wd lock and backed it out. pinned the gas and the belt was slipping cause of water in it. so i got in front of it and pushed the gas while pushing it out.i got it out and kept it running and drained the CVT and revved it hoping all the grit in the water ( not much) would drain out with the water. i kept that draining and took the tube off the front pipe vent for the CVT. and then the plug for the air box. i did all this while i was slightly revving it just to keep it alive and keep the tiny bit of sediment in the water while draining. i did all this in about a minute, DEFINATELY not more than 2. so VERY QUICKLY. should i be good to go for riding more? did i get lucky?
  10. I finally got my 450 started. It had been sitting for awhile, so the fuel varnished and now I have an OILY substance gunkin up my bike. I emptied my tank first before running it. Got out as much as I could. I got a compressor and blew it out from tank, took off fuel line before it goes into pump and injectors and flushed good new gas threw it TO FLUSH MY SYSTEM TO HELP CLEAN LINE,PUMP AND INJECTORS, VALVES ECT... It is sputtering and most cases wont stay on. HELP! Need advice before i junk it. wHAT ELSE CAN i DO. RUNNIN LIKE CRAP!
  11. Well I finally got the rocks to try some jumping today and no wonder you racers love it so much. Dam its fun as all can be! Finally by days end I was able to clear 80% of the table top. Hey Guys I am getting ready to pull the swingarm bolt out of my machine so i can pull the motor out so i can split the case and have the crank rebuilt I am running into one problem though on the swingarm bolt that goes through the rear of the motor there is a lock nut that looks kind of like a castle nut it has four prongs I am guessing there is some sort of a special tool to get this out anyone know where I would find this or any suggestions on how it comes out?
  13. i have a 06 trx450er and clutch wont fully disengage it goes through the gears fine but when you put it in 1st gear it starts to go it slips but moves with clutch fully realeased it wont go into nuteral when idleing either i thought to adjust clutch but still did it even up to the point of adjusting it so far that it sliped going through gears please help idk what it could be.
  14. a friend of mine rides nothing but honda and on a recent rebuild he read on a honda forum that a honda 450 timing chain works on 400ex! the reason for using it was because of it's double roller style design!(stronger) is this possible with an ltr 450 and a ltz 400? i'm doin a rebuild and not sure the best route. just wondering if an aftermarket chain is as strong as a stock 450 chain, if it works? just curious!!!! thanks! -Frank BTW- sorry, my bike is a 2003(early model) ltz400!

  17. I am curious if anyone out there really knows how much you gain from a intake on a kfx450R? I know on most 450's the honda yamaha ect.. you may gain 1 or 2 horse but I here on the KFX you gain almost 5 horse is this really true?

  19. So I got my tax return and dupmped about 2k into my LTR. The list of parts incudes a Precision steering stabilizer, stage 1 Hotcams, Tusk a-arm guards, Armadillo swingarm and chassis skid plates, Lexx MXe pipe and fuel controler, Pro-Tec Moflo airbox lid, ITP Holeshot GNCC rear tires, and Skat-track Edge 8 paddles on matte black G-force XC 10X8 wheels. The paddles will fit all my quads so they aren't just for the LTR, but I plan on buying some Skat-track Haulers for my 500R, so it won't have to share anymore. I am sure you have all seen a stock LTR 450 This is the machine all stripped down.
  20. Hi, New to the site, and atv's, but have been riding on 2 wheels forever. I just purchased an 07 king 450, and didn't notice til I got it home that 4 wheel is displayed on the gauge all the time. This is regardless of the position for the push button 4 wd. I haven't had the opportunity to put it up on blocks to confirm all 4 are turning. Is there a fuse or something that is causing the display to be constant ? This rookie is open to any and all advice. Thank you in advance.
  21. I have recently rebuilt my yfz 450 as a lot of you know from my other posts. Well, they bike runs great. Very strong but i'm kinda wanting to sell it to build my 06 raptor 700r with 50th anniversary plastics. I've had a few potential buyers of the newly build 480 but all have turned out to be scams. I had an offer last night from a guy and after i covered all of my basis', he emails me this morning saying "well i did some research on the cylinder works cylinder you have on it and i found out that they tend to crack". Does anyone know if this is true? I've had no trouble with it. It has a 13:1 comp cp piston with a stock stroke 06 OEM crank and rod. The guy tried to get me to email the vin to him buy i refused and then told him if he was bringing a check, to make sure to cash it before he got here and the next email this morning was the about cylinder works cylinder having cracking issues.   23. Hey guys, I have a quick question I tried searching a bit for the answer but being downrange I run out of time for browsing. I am looking into getting a used 450 be it TRX, YFZ or a LTR, more torwards the TRX or YFZ due to price and width. Mostly recreational riding, wanting to get into xc and maybe mx but that is not my deciding factor you can mod and set up anything to work for what you want, My question is from the start of the 450's what years are the most reliable meaning which ones and years had the biggest issues.... I know performance is more to maintain. I heard YFZ had the 04-05's with crank or oil issues to get 06 and up but what about the TRX or LTR any years with issues to avoid??? Thanks
  24. Just a quick question, I was wondering if anyone knows if a Grizzly 660 motor can be fitted into a Kodiak 450? My motor needs rebuilt and I figured I would see if that could be done instead. Basically will it fit, work, and can be used with the same transmission?

I am having a problem with my 450 es shift, have been going thru the steps in the service manual checking battery, etc. Can anyone please do me a favor and connect a volt meter to your battery, turn on the lights and rev up your engine slowly, my symptoms point to a faulty voltage regulator/rectifier, when I rev my machine up my voltage slowly drops, the higher the rev the lower she goes. mabye triggering an ECM fault, my year machine does not show the fault, you can reset by turning the key off then on and rocking the machine and using the es to shift back to Neutral to restart. I also disconnected the speed sensor and found that the voltage at the Blue/Black wire to GND was 11.25 volts dc, 1 volt less than the battery was showing, according to the manual I should get battery voltage. I have also done a leak test on the battery, 1.5 mA, which is under the 5mA by the manual, disconnected the Voltage reg. and was the same, manaul then says (faulty regulator) not sure if this is my shift problem but would sure appreciate if anyone can confirm the requests above Thanks so much
