Hey everyone! Working on a 400ex for a friend of my mom's because it will only start when you jump the solenoid. I have pretty much gone through all the wiring from the battery up to the plug for the start button and nothing is broken or connected incorrectly. I tested the yellow/green and yellow/red wires that come from solenoid and they both read 0 volts as they should. The key switch reads 12v as I believe it should as well. What has me stumped is that the black wire that comes out of the start button assembly reads different voltage numbers, although I know it should be 12v. Is it the start button for sure or could something else be causing me to get that reading? Thanks and sorry for the long post

Hi, I have a Big Bear 400 that Im working on for a friend. It starts, runs for a bit, then suddenly stalls. It will do it if its idling, or if Im driving it. The longest Ive gotten it to run is about 20 seconds. It will start back up after a few pulls (battery is shot, waiting for a new one to come it) but then will stall again. Does this sound like a carb issue or is something else going on? Thanks!

ive had this little bike for a very long time and always worked great, start first pull every time, recently i was driving it and it started running rough when i was almost home, it died as soon as i pulled in the driveway ( no spark ) i fixed that problem ( i have tons of parts ) but it still wouldnt start, a couple days ago i went out and gave it one pull and it took right off, i had to hold the throttle open a bit but it was cold out and i didnt use the choke so i expected to have to do that, i let off the gas and it stalled, i left it sit for about 20 minutes and went back out to try again and it wouldnt start, so i took the carb off and cleaned it pretty good, still wouldnt start, went out yesterday and it started right up, i kept it going for about 10 mins by holding the throttle, its running a little rough but not too bad, i let it stall then tried it again and it started no problem ( about 5 or 6 times in a row) so i walked away thinking just need to tune the carb a bit, tried it last night and today and it wont start again, one thing i did notice is that i dont need to use the decomp valve every time i pull it ( sometimes every time, sometimes i can pull it 20 times before it needs it again) keep in mind the motor is in pretty good shape, it doesnt smoke and when the decomp is doing what its supposed to it will rip the cord out of your hand if you dont use it, anyone have any suggestions?? im about to lose it, im leaning toward a broken valve spring or a bent valve, oh yeah, when you pull the choke on with the breather unhooked, you can see gas shooting out of the back of the carb, any help would be great thanks

I recently purchased a 1993 Yamaha Big Bear 350 for $300 from a guy at work who could not get it running, getting rid of old fuel and changing the plug it fired up, it has a new carb rebuild that was done before i bought it, problem i have is that it only starts and runs on half choke, even in the -15 celcius canadian weather today. im not sure where to start on this, any help would be great, thanks.

THis is actually a Bruin 350, I fat fingered the thread title. This Bruin has been in storage for 1 year, with no stabil used and I'm attempting to bring this beast back to life. The only way I've been able to to start this thing is: 1. Leave fuel cock open overnite 2. Adjust choke to mid-choke 3. Press Start 4. Idles for 3-4 minutes on a really LABORED idle (not smooth idle, but sounds like puttering on its deathbead) However once I get it started, it seems to have a terribly labored idle for about 3-4 minutes, then dies. If you touch the trottle during idle warmup, it dies. Once it's dead, there is no getting it started again until the next day. I've done the following: 1. Visually inspected and cleaned sparkplug - verified spacing @ .025" 2. Drained old fuel and refueled with premium unleaded 3. Checked fuel flow from fuel cock to carb - smooth flow 4. Checked fuel flow from carb to carb fuel drain - smooth flow 5. Compression appears to be ok, however I do not have a tester, but placing my hand behind exhaust yields good pressure. I have Fuel, Spark and temp fire, what should I check next? Any moving parts in the carb that have a tendancy to get stuck? Perhaps the stator?
