About Me

My Garage

  1. Was given a 1997 Bayou 220 for free that had sat in the back of a barn for almost 9 years. Owner had parked it because his kids got too big for it, and they have other bigger bikes, said when it was parked it ran fine. He gave it to me as a trade from some networking I did in his home. First steps: *Marvels Mystery Oil bath down the cylinder to free up the piston rings (I let sit for 24hrs) *New battery as old one was shot from not having a charge for 8 years. I took my multimeter to the entire wiring harness and cleaned EVERY contact possible, as not even the headlights were working. After a few hours, everything electrical is now working. Headlights, green dash light, red reverse light (goes on and off with changing from reverse to neutral), and starter spinning strong (after a conversation with my mallet). *Drained old oil (no glitter!) 2qts fresh oil with new filter. *CDI was shot-- had zero spark and using a multimeter up the wiring harness everything was good up to the CDI—replaced with new one along with new plug wire and new plug now have excellent spark The original carb was a total loss. I'm assuming it was parked full of fuel with the fuel switch on. It looked like they found it buried in the sand and put it on, it was so eaten and corroded my thumb went through it trying to get it apart—so new carb. I did also inspect the intake and none of what was in the carb made it into the engine, thankfully. After oil bath, compression was still low—threw some brake cleaner down the intake and noticed smoke escaping from the head gasket—took the head off and saw the original head gasket was completely shot. Replaced that, and now compression is up to 90 from 50. I'm assuming, it'll need to go through a few heat cycles for the compression to really build back up (had the same issue with my 2000 Kodiak 400 from siting for 5yrs after a few heat cycles went to 180) While the head was off, I did a leak test on the valves and liquid stayed, so no signs of gaps in the valves sealing. Also took a look at the piston and wall and both are in excellent shape, very clean conditions. At this point, the bike should fire off or at least pop… but now that compression is back it's sucking air in though both the carb AND the exhaust pipe. Putting my hand on the pipe (no muffler) I can feel it sucking air in, doing the same with the back of the carb, I can feel it sucking air there as well. It isn't pushing air out anywhere. I've checked timing and it's correct. The TDC mark on the flywheel is lined up with the spot on inspection hole. The mark on the timing gear in the head is lined up with the mark on the casting there as well, so timing is spot on. I don't believe it has a leak from the exhaust valve due to the leak test I did. I also don't believe a valve is sticking, I can see them both moving just fine when looking through the inspection holes. In the past, I've had a bike have intake from exhaust and exhaust going out carb, but that was the timing being off, which doesn't seem to be the issue here. Any advice on this would a big help as I'm stumped on what could be causing double air intake. Chances are it might be something simple that I'm not even thinking of. At this point, I'm about to order a box of hair from Amazon Prime from all the head scratching going on.
  2. Just bought this for 1200 and it back fires when u really give it gas or rev it up n nuetral....can smell gas like its getting to much....would this cause this to back fire? what could it b
  3. I have a couple of questions again please. In cleaning the carb i took the needle valve out.... it had a string on it and a rubber ring and a small washer... I need to know for sure how these go back because they fell out of the carb when i took the needle valve out and I am not unsure of how they go back in I think the spring first slides onto the needle valve, but what comes next if so the washer or the rubber O ring? Next I noticed the breather that i purchased does not set tightly into the hose that comes out of the carb would that keep it from idleing correctly? cause i can put something against the hose and it trys to idle? right now though i have the float off cause gas is pouring out of the carb when i try to start it... Thank you in advance
  4. Since day one of owning the Kodiak I have not been able to shift gears going up steep roads nor down steep roads, it will shift gears fine going straight on a road though. But if i start out going up a steep road in 1st gear no matter how i try while moving it will not let me shift into 2nd gear ..etc... unless I stop then I can change into 2nd gear its the same way if I am going down a steep hill what ever gear I am in I have to stay in that gear till I stop and change to another gear. but again it is fine if I am driving on a straight road is this normal? if not is there a way to adjust it maybe a linkage to adjust to where it will shift easier when I use my foot to try and shift uphill or downhill.. I recently drove a small kawaski 220 and it shifts easily going up a steep road and down it without having to stop to shift. Would appreciate some insight from someone that knows about these type of atvs when it comes to shifting them. Thank you
  5. Just bought this machine and really need a service manual. Had the rear end go out after owning it one afternoon. Thanks for your help guys. 1997 Yamaha Wolverine 350 4x4
  6. Not sure if this has been posted here or not, but if it hasnt then I think it is worthy of a sticky note. 1997 Suzuki Quadrunner LTF-4WD 250 front drum brake wheel cylinders are the same as a common part on Geo Metros and other vehicles. Try the following: DHB-W37850 Drum Brake Wheel Cylinder I got mine from Summit Racing for around $7 each versus the Suzuki dealer who wanted $60 each. I appreciate the help everyone has provided me on this forum. Thanks!
  7. I am having so many proublems with my Lakota 300. Can't seem to get the timing right for some reason. Havn't been able to get it to start for some while. Does anyone know of a sit where I can download a free manual. All I can find is a manul for a KLF 300 and I don't know if I can use this manual for the Lakota. Any help would be great. Thank You!!!!!
  8. I have a 97 280 king quad I just rebuilt I set the timing adjusted the valves and went to start it it fires up but will only stay running if I keep the start button depressed, idont have a battery Iin it yet just hooked up to my battery charger with it on jump could this be the issue if not any suggestions?
  9. My four trax has a snow blade with a winch mounted on the blade. The winch looks like a wiper motor. I would like to install a winch on the Quad, so it will handle the blade and also pull the quad up into the bed of my truck. I see mounts on line for my Quad, but I cant see how they would possibly fit. If anybody has a pic of a winch on this vintage quad, I would appreciate it. Thanks Todd
  10. Well I got this thing a few weeks ago for 2k. Rode everyday and hard by me, last guy was older and easy on it. Anyway. Need some help. Posting pics and info below<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Alright. Why are my tires rubbing so different?!?!<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> What is oozing from front axle? Should I worry?<br /> <br /> <br /> That's from rear axle, worried about that oozing black stuff. It was all by my finger. What is it?! <br /> <br /> Also brakes have nothing. Where do I start with them?! And where can I get a cheap solenoid and tires?! Thanks!<br /> Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  11. Having trouble with rear brake. Removed caliber, plunger was stuck, freed, bled brake, doesnt appear to be any air in line, still no brakes. (question) is there a seperate master cylinder and/or reservoir for rear brake or is one for ft brake also one for rear. If there is a rear master cylinder i would say its bad causing no brake. It applies a little bit, but not enough to do any braking. tks

So I had forgot about joining this site, I hope you guys can help me. I have been contemplating selling my quad, really for no other reason except I don't use it much and it needs work , nothing real mechanical or ruins great but tires chain brakes plastic and I wish it was four wheel drive. This quad was my uncle's he bought it new,I was the first to reck it and he died that same year, he loved it my sister bought it from his widow and before the bank took it from her I bought it for way to dam much but past is past I have moved in town and don't really know what the heck I should do with it! I do have a buddy that rides allot but I have two little girls and just can't decide should I move on or refurbish Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk 2
  13. New to the forum, I have that year and model atv and I cannot get it to idle so far at all... I bought it off this lady who had let it set for two years without starting it.... I can get it to run as long as i use the throttle to start it, but when I let off it will not idle at all... I did buy a rebuild kit.. and the only things i changed was the things inside where the float goes... reckon one thing is called a needle valve... so changed that and anything else within the carburator where the float is at... including changing the float... I did notice the shut off for gas does not completely shut off when on the off spot... but still it should idle when starting it I would think.... I can pull the choke out all the way and it will idle but when i push the choke back in it will stall right away... can anyone help I do not know much about working on atvs.. also i cannot find a idle screw anywhere on the carburator, there is a real big screw around the bottom area facing toward the ground, but when i turn it i cannot tell a bit in the idleing rather i turn it one way are the other.. sure would appreicate any advice.. thank you
  14. Hello... I recently bought a used 1997 yamaha kodiak 400 4x4 .. I cannot find no 4wd switch on it at all... I got the manual for it from someone on this site and it shows its on the drivers side handle bar where you give it gas but there is nothing there at all... so thought maybe it had been removed but there is no lose wiring no where that connected to anything there... so i been trying to figure out how to get from 2wd into 4wd but there is no switch to push on it as far as I can tell... and my neighber said the reason i could not pull the manual cable to start the atv is because you have to release compression with a nob are something before it will pull easy to start the atv? Sure would appreicate anyones thoughts on these two things thank you
  15. Hey guys, I just got a '97 Scrambler 400 4x4 as a side project to work on through winter. I was wondering if anyone here could give me any great advice as to where I can get parts or even a service manual for this bike. Ive been told these are not too easy to come by. Also Im very much used to working on Honda's so if there is anything crucial I should know about these before tackling it I would greatly appreciate the advice.
  16. my cab is pouring the gas out of what i guess you call the overflow line at the bottom of the bowl does anyone know what is causing this, and how to fix it ? thanks
  17. I have a 97 Kodiak 400 4x4 and the fuel gauge in the tank was damaged when I got it. I would like to replace it and Yamaha has given me a price of $50 for the parts. I have a Clymer manual but it does not give the remove and replace instructions for the fuel gauge only the tank. Any wizard out there that can give me the info or point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance Code
  18. Hey guys and gals, I aquired a 97 King Quad 300 from my dad, it has a few problems but seems to be an ok runner, so Im just trying to decide if its worth sinking a few dollars into or not. The problems it has are an intermittent electrical problem which I have shorted out, one front axle is really screwed near the tire (shouldnt be a problem fixing that) and only one rear tire spins. So my question is has any of you guys torn apart the rear end of these things? I had the quad lifte in the air, and the right hand side rear tire spins and there is a little resistance there (that is the one that works) but the left hand side spins really freely. So Im not familiar with these quads and axles at all, does this just sound like a matter of throwing a new axle in the rear end? Does it sound like something more, and something in the diff let go? Rear axles easy to pull or no? Ive checked out the diagram on cheapcycleparts, and to me it looks like there could be a lot that could go wrong inside. I plan on ripping the quad apart this winter and repairing the issues, but was hoping to get a little insight if anyone has had these rear ends apart. Thanks.
  19. Hello , I have a 1997 bigbear 350 4x4 when i hit the start button nothing happens, just the oil light comes on let off the start button it goes off .... if i cross the start relay it starts right up need help thanks
  20. My neighbor who had hip surgery 6 years ago parked his King Quad in a shed and it has not been fired up since that time. He replaced the battery, but could not get the unit to run. He asked me for assistance, so we towed the unit over to my shop. I got the unit running, but could not keep it idling without turning up the the RPMs...and when I tried to drive the unit it seems like it ran out of gas after a couple of hundred yards. I tore the carburetor out...dropped the float bowl and discovered a bug (about the size of a housefly) in the bottom. I removed the bug...cleaned what jets and other components I could, put the unit back together...with the same results. I once again removed the carburetor...have removed the plug for access to the pilot needle adjustment and I am preparing to dunk the whole unit into a can of carburetor cleaner. I cannot get the diaphragm screws loose and was wondering if that would hurt the rubber diaphragm if I just left it on the carb...and what should the pilot needle adjustment be set to. Any help would be appreciated. Chet P.S. What should the fuel switch under the gas tank be set to. On-Pri-Reserv
  21. My 1987 Trail boss will start with choke on, and then the choke must immediately be taken off to get the engine to run for 5 seconds only. If the choke is reapplyed when the engine is shutting down after burning its 5 second gulp of fuel from the choke, it will run for another 5 seconds and so on. I have removed and cleaned the carb twice without finding a problem or improving the problem. Each time I remove the carb, the bowl is full of fuel. Compression is 95 psi. It is only running on the fuel provided by continually applying the choke!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  22. hi need help with my big bear 350 2x4 1997... front wheels (both) whobles a lot...it is not the bearings i checed.... looc lice the dum brace... the drum is loose on the spline for the front shaft ( not 4x4).. lice i said i checed the bearings and their good....wondering if it could be wrong drums on it... or maybe bent drums wich not sure it could bent more licely breac but anyway i need help...when i put the shaft into the bearings all he way tru .. teh shaft doesnt move... so bearings good.... it is when i put the drum bac on and i attach the wheel on it....and i do have a manual and not too helpfull....of course the right thing to do would be to bring the qua to a dealer or mecanic.. but dont have a trailer and mostly no cash to pay someone to fix it.....i rather do it myselfe but i i dont no if i should buy new drums and their not cheap.... what could it be and what solution i have?? thanx.
  23. Hi all , I have a 1997 Polaris Scrambler 400 4X4. It will not go into forward and if you keep at it and it does go into forward gear it will pop back out if you are going down a hill and your rpm's drop. It goes into Reverse very easy with no grinding. It grinds like crazy trying to get it into forward. You can hear it click into gear then all you hear is a light grinding in the transmission that get louder with the rpm's raising without going into gear. the 4X4 works fine. Sometimes when you get it into gear it will stay in gear for awhile before popping out and sometimes it will stay in gear just a few minutes and then it takes anywhere from 5-30 minutes to get it to take forward again. Before i tear the transmission down , does anyone have any ideas what i'm going to run into ? Thanks for the help
  24. this is probably posted wrong but i'm new here and can't find info i'm looking for with the search tool. I have a 1997 Big Bear 4x4 350. To shift into reverse the rear brake pedal has to be puished and the select lever pulled back. PROBLEM: i allowed a "buddy" to "adjust" the brakes for me and now I can't get into reverse without using a screwdriver to push back the cable pin inside the shift selector. Maybe the brake adjustment had nothing to do with the issue but I'm pretty new and raw to bike mechanics so I'm looking for ANY help!
  25. I have a scrambler 400 and it will not go forward. Reverse works fine but when i shift it into forward it just sits there, it just happened the other day, up until then it ran fine. Any ideas where to start trouble shooting or what is wrong?
