Hey all, I need some input on a problem I'm having with my Kodiak 400 that keeps fouling plugs. First off, I've done a lot of work to this thing, most of it all in good fun. Brake work, cv joints, u joints, carb kit, checked valve lash, compression good, changed all fluids, etc... My problem is it keeps fouling plugs very quickly. I can put a new (manual recommended plug) in and it starts right up, runs great, idles great, picks up good. Doesn't stutter at all. I ride it for 1/2 a mile, it cuts off and won't start back up. I let it sit overnight thinking maybe it got to hot. Try to start it the next day, nothing. Put a new plug in, fires right up, runs great for another 1/2 mile or so, dead. The plugs come out and look carbon fouled with dry black soot on them. I don't know if this is a fuel/air mixture problem or a ignition problem. A couple of things that I noticed is I never need to pull the choke out to start it. Also, when it starts it automatically idles high like an automatic choke would do, then it comes back down to a good idle. Also I noticed that the air/fuel mixture needle valve screw does nothing when I adjust it in or out. I can screw it all the way closed and the motor still runs and idles good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm almost leaning to a ignition breaking down the plugs?? Thanks!

The choke lever doesn't stay in position on my 2001 Yamaha Kodiak. The model is YFM 400. I have to hold the lever to the choke position manually for some reason. Any Ideas as to why?

Hey everyone, I have an issue with my dad's 03 Yamaha Kodiak 400. It had been running great but he left it sitting for a short amount of time. When he started it, it ran fine for a little bit but all of a sudden it quit taking gas. I thought it may have been the carb because it him not running it. The carb ended up being pretty clean. He put it back on and after taking it off and cleaning again, I'm beginning to wonder what it could be. It'll start and idle just fine, but when you go to give it throttle, it'll die out. It sounds like it's not getting air right but idk where to look or what else it could be. I'm stumped and need to figure this out before I go crazy. Anyone have any ideas???

Hey Group, Looking for someone that has gone down this road or knows of the fix or where to acquire the part. Picked up a 1994 Yamaha Kodiak FYM400 4x4 that someone really abused it. I kinda got carried away with the restore as I don't like seeing a decent quad going to pasture without trying to fix it. It wasn't running when I picked it up so I didn't have the ability to test drive it. I ended up replacing the entire top end of the engine as it was obvious that the previous owner got the oil too hot (all the fan blades were missing) and the cam was bouncing around in the head. Cylinder, piston, new ignition system (coil, CDI box and stator) carb and a bunch of other odds and ends that were worn out. I replaced the secondary clutch plates although they were within tolerance and bolted it back together. It fired right up and I was pretty exited. After an engine break in run, I shifted it into gear and could clearly feel it going into gear. Only problem is, it won't move. I pulled the clutch cover off and figured the primary clutch was the culprit. I measured the linings and even though they are not uniform in the wear pattern, I would consider that they are not within tolerance (minimum 1.5mm , 2mm stock). Problem is, I can't find a replacement primary clutch anywhere. Part number is ID'd as 4GB-16620-02-00 CLUTCH CARRIER ASSEMBLY. Anyone got an idea where to find one, or replace the shoes or whatever. Kinda in a jam.

Hi guys, looking for information for my new to me Kodiak 400. I found the vin on the frame to know its a 1994.

i got a 93 400 Kodiak the frame on one side is rusted out. is this a comin thing? was wondering if it worth the tumble to put in a used one. I'm worried most of the bolts will brake. it don't look the rusted over all. just the part were the frame boke in half. do all kodiaks have the same frame

I have a 96 Kodiak 400 that suddenly died and didn't start back up again I replaced the cdi and ignition coil and now when I check for spark it is very good but when I put the plug back in the engine to start it it does not start so I checked for spark again and it only sparks every few seconds instead of what it did before. The engine will run if I don't check for spark and just start it right away but I don't know how long because it was just running on wd 40.

i sunk my kodiak in lake it ran fine awhile now cranks wont start dont think its geting spark. Replaced ignition coil and plug still wont start even sprayed carb cleaner in back carb still doesnt fire

So I recently got a 2003 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4 as a winter project but is needing less work then I thought, but I do have an issue and asking a tip. The issue is im loosing oil but my rear swing arm boot is ripped so im trying to confirm its that, and I have no lights for gearing but it seems to go in all gears besides park for. sure is not acting complete right, how can I tell if it has both high and low or if one is both. thanks in advance

The atv would not stay running and bogged when given fuel then wouldn't start. I changed plug, worked shortly then same. I put new carb on, cleaned tank, new peacock, worked for two short rides, around yard perfectly. Started it a couple of times in garage for son and the last time it stalled and now won't start. Turns over nicely, just won't start. Any ideas to try?

I picked up a 2004 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4 abut a year ago. I've been having an issue when the bike gets wet the fuse for the headlights blows. This seems to kill the headlights and taillights as well as the speedometer light. This may be unrelated but the 4WD indicator light also doesn't work. Not sure where to start on this issue. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

I am looking at a 2001 Kodiak 400 on marketplace haven't bought it yet, he says it has no spark but engine turns over and wants 500.00 for it . Is that a reasonable price ? Im a little skeptical . In my area these older bikes are selling in running condition 2500 -3000. Seems high for a 20 year old quad

Good Afternoon everyone. I recently purchased a 2000 Kodiak 400 Automatic 4WD and the previous owner thought it was leaking oil in behind the primary. Has anyone ever fixed something like this. Tonight I plan on pulling the cover off to see just how much oil we are talking about. Thanks TK

Hello everyone. First post here. I have a really nice 1999 Kodiak 400 4x4 I picked up a few years ago as the second owner. I have put around 500 miles on it but just the other day I noticed a small, and somewhat hidden, auxiliary electrical plug. It is located, and firmly mounted on a factory mount, on the rear of the front rack but in front of the steering column assembly and plastic housing. I have searched the internet in depth and found that this is in fact an auxiliary plug. I took the cap off of it and it is a very odd design. It is a female plug with only one receptacle. I did find online that some of these older models came with this DC outlet and that the machine, when purchased new, would have come with an adaptor for it so it can obviously be used. Can someone please point me in the right direction where to find this adaptor, its part number, or basically any information that can be of assistance regarding this "new find" on my 4wheeler? Thank you all in advance.

I just picked this up because the former owner said his buddy was riding it and it just quit a few months back and he didn’t have time to mess with it. I messed with it and can get it to turn over with the switch but I have to have it shifted into reverse and hold the brake and the electric switch works. If it’s in High or Low gear it won’t work. the neutral switch connection seems decent and the relay will click if I pull the connection on and off. However I notice the neutral light will never come on but the reverse light will come on at the center hub (the taillight is also ALWAYS on and bright regardless of whether brake lever is pulled). anyone have a fix for this? Every post seems old online and then there never is a resolution to it.

Does anyone have any ideas why I can't shift gears on my 2001 Kodak 400 while it's running? I have to turn it off to change gears and it's always difficult to switch gears. I'm new to ownership but pretty mechanically handy.

I had to replace a front calliper so just loosened all three banjo bolts and drained the whole system. Now I am unable to get new fluid to the rear calliper, either by pumping the right side hand brake or with a vacuum on the bleeder bolt. Any ideas on what the problem is?

The Kodiak 400 I just bought didn’t come with an air filter. I’m searching and am not finding an air filter that will work. I’ve checked Amazon, Bike Bandit, etc., but everything I am seeing is for a Big Bear 400 and reviews are saying it won’t fit a Kodiak 400. The bigger issue I am running into is that the ones I see all have what appears to be a female end for connecting with a clamp to a male inlet. The inlet in my air box is female. Now I know I ain’t no expert on ATV reproduction and procreation, but that just don’t work! Can somebody please hook me up with a part number or suitable aftermarket filter? I really didn’t expect this search to be so difficult…..
