About Me

My Garage

  1. Hey everyone, first I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. Now onto my new problem. My apologies now for a long post. I just want to go thru everything I've done to help figure out what the issue is. Here goes: I have an 04 Yamaha Kodiak 450. Last week I went to take it for a ride and it wouldn't start. The display would light up and the speedometer numbers would go around in a circle like it was loading (to give an idea of what it looks like). When I would try to start it, it wouldn't do anything and the display would go blank. I tried crossing over the solenoid and it still wouldn't do anything, nothing at all. Today I was writing in it and hooked up a charger/jump box to see if that battery was dead. The charger read that it was completely charged. I tried cranking it and after a few tries and reconnecting the charger, I got the 4 wheeler to start. I unhooked the charger and a minute later the 4 wheeler just shut off like I turned the switch off. I, again, hooked up the charger, waited a couple minutes and the ATV started again. This time I left the charger hooked up several minutes while the ATV was running. When I unhooked the charger this time, it stayed running and I was actually able to ride it around the yard for several minutes without any issues. I parked it, shut it off with the kill switch like I always do, turned the key off. I thought I would see if it would start on it's own. I turned the switch on, kill switch off, and nothing. The display wouldn't light up nor turn over. When I would turn the kill switch on, the display would then light up, but once I turned the switch off, the display would go blank. I took off the start button ignition assembly off the handlebar and all of the connections looked new, so it should be making a great connection to the handlebar. I originally had a new solenoid on, but I put the original back on, cleaned all of the terminals, tried crossing it over with nothing happening still. I put on a new starter a couple of weeks ago and there hadn't been any issues until a couple weeks ago when I tried taking it for a ride like originally stating. Could the kill switch have gone bad and is causing this issue? Could it be some chance be the starter since it's not an OEM? Could it be the rectifier going bad? Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated. I would love to get it fixed soon. I have some other maintenance I want to do on it and have it road ready in case I need it if weather were to get bad. Thanks in advance. I do appreciate all of y'all's help and advice.
  2. I recently had to replace the starter on my Kodiak. It cranks super easy now but it's make this high pitched squealing sound. It sounds like bearings that's not greased or something. I didn't take the starter apart to look it over before installing it. So it could need greased. Should I take it back off and do that, or could it be something else I should look at? It didn't make this noise with the old starter.
  3. Quad can turn very tightly to the left but very wide to the right. On inspection, when turning right, the pitman arm hits the EPS controller - it doesn't when turning left. The quad had been rolled (prior owner) and the steering was straightened. I believe that the pitman arm is now slightly offset. Can I disconnect the tie-rods from the pitman arm and then remove and reattach the pitman arm in a more centered position, and then reattach and adjust the tie-rods? Or is the pitman arm not adjustable since there is a grove that it must align with on the EPS? If not the method I suggest, how would a person fix the issue? Would the entire steering system need to be taken apart and reassembled? Thanks very much! Phil.
  4. Hi All - My son and I went in halvers on a 2006 Kodiak 450 recently. We rode it some, and realized it is not charging the battery. I pulled the rectifier off and saw the plug was jacked up, the DC hot wire was not even making a connection. So, I thought that was the issue, but decided to test rectifier and stator using my multimeter while stuff was apart. The rectifier tested bad using the technique I saw on YouTube here: I got OL on a diode test when I should have been seeing .2-.8v on one of the tests so it is bad. So, I will be getting a new rectifier and fixing the wiring/plug. While doing that, I also tested the stator. The stator tested with zero ohms when checking resistance between the three white wires, and I think I should have been seeing at least a little resistance, .2-.9 ohms. I did a ground test and it was good. Also, I started the bike and checked A/C voltage on all three wires and it looked OK. My question is, do you guys think the stator is bad with the 0 ohms resistance? I am a little confused since I see A/C voltage. The wires are clean and it looks like there is a new gasket in place, so I think previous owner put a new stator in at some point. Also, the rectifier looks newer, not as dirty as rest of bike. I suppose he may have put in a cheap amazon regulator/rectifier and stator but not sure. Thanks Clint
  5. I recently got a 2003 yamaha kodiak 450 with a bad starter clutch. And when i go to replace it i noticw there is no woodruff key and the brass bushing was split. Now i have to basically press on my idler gear. Im pretty sure this is wrong and i need help i have tried 2 different companys. Please help. There is no play in the crankshaft and no obivous marks or wear signs.
  6. Hey everybody, I recently bought a 2006 Kodiak 450 and on my first day riding It I noticed the starter would not disengage. I would turn the kill switch off, ignition off, I tried everything but it wouldn’t stop, even while running. I took the seat off quickly and disconnected the battery. When I got home I unplugged the Starter Solenoid and reattached the battery, only for the constant “starting” to happen again. I have already ordered a new solenoid but the ATV wanting to start with the solenoid unplugged makes me weary that the solenoid is the actual issue. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  7. So I’ve ran into a problem with my 450 Kodiak the starting button went out a few months ago and I had no way to crank it up so i wires and a switch connected to my starter solenoid just so I can crank it and ride it but afterwards I had another issue when I squeezed in the rear break it would stick and as soon as I turned the key on so I cut the wire coming from the starting button and fixed it now another problem has appeared when I put the ATV in neutral it cranks but only in neutral it would do the same thing in park but has quit and it’s very confusing on why it’s doing what it’s doing any help in the direction to fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated
  8. Can anyone tell me if a 2004 Yamaha Kodiak 450 cooling system needs to be bled after a coolant change? Thank you for your help.
  9. Does anyone have a good picture of the rear brake master cylinder and cable hook ups for a 2003 kodiak 450?.......I am having a heck of a time getting my brakes to work properly and I am not even sure the levers and springs are correct.......I have checked the owners manual but its not clear and I do not have a repair manual.........Thanks.
  10. New here, I am having trouble with my bike overheating. The temp light is working but the fan will not run. The fan will only run with the ignition in the off position (Key removed). Not sure how this is possible. Also having electrical problems and it will ruin a battery (if not disconnected) about every 3 months. Any help/ideas would be greatly apricated. Thanks in advance

  15. Just bought the atv, sounds like there’s sand in a bearing near the clutch! Any ideas?
  16. Hello im really needing some advice on where to start for the problem im having. I know that iv got to pull the motor and split the case but is there something i should be looking for? Im guessing its not a very common issue with these bikes because i cant find a single thing online about anyone else talking about it. Anyways my issue is i bought a 2007 Kodiak 450 from a friend whom said he was hauling a** on it down the road and all of a sudden the back wheels locked up. He pulled the rear diff and it seems to be ok i cant spin the rear prop shaft at all no matter where the shifter is.
  17. I turn the key on and the dash lights up, the head lights work... I push the button to start and nothing happens, no click/crank, no noise at all. It will pull start, I can jump start it from the battery to the starter, and I replaced the starter relay. IWhat could it be??? Oh , and it is in Park, and I tried the kill switch several times in both positions, that does make a faint click, and sounds like it’s working
  18. Hello I'm looking into purchasing a base model kodiak 450 in the spring. Is there anything I need to know as far as problems with the kodiak 450? Any engine problems? Does it have the air box problem that the grizzly's had a few years ago where the air box didn't seal right and dirt would get in your engine? I'm coming off of a 2000 yamaha grizzly 600 and have loved it from day one!! Very durable and reliable machine! Can I expect the same reliability from the kodiak?
  19. Anyone know what the ohm values are on all the wires that come out of the stator cover.
  20. Hi new to this. I was given a 09 Yamaha Kodiak 450. Model yfm45fay. There are several pieces missing body wise. What years are the same to look for used parts. Thanks Larry

  22. The VIN on my 2018 Kodiak 450 is not where it's supposed to be. I bought this used. Is there another "hidden" location where I can find it? Need the number for insurance co. Thanks in advance.
  23. i have a 2004 Yamaha Kodiak 450 and it is losing oil but does not smoke what is it
  24. I have a 2003 Kodiak 450 that i purchased a while back with around 300 hours on it. It has never ran right from the beginning. Initially i thought it was just a carburetor issue because it was all clogged up from sitting for months. It has been cleaned, rebuilt, and taken off probably about 10 times troubleshooting this problem. I have quadruple checked everything including float height ect and it is set correctly, the jets are also brand new, needle and seat have been pressure tested as well. So after all of that I am convinced that the carburetor is not the culprit. I have an issue where the idle is very choppy, almost as if it is misfiring with a rich condition on top of that. I can use a brand new plug and run the machine for just a few minutes and it will be a dry and and coated in black carbon build up. The exhaust also has a strong smell at idle. I had trouble restarting it when hot for a while, but i adjusted the valves and it seemed to solve that issue. They were both way out of tolerance (tight). The weird thing is, outside of idle it seems to run pretty well. So with all that being said I have ruled out the carb/valves/compression and moved on to the ignition and this is where i have a few questions about factory specifications. I guess the main question I have is, how strict are these tolerances? And could them being off by this amount cause the issue I am having? Do all three of these parts really need to be replaced? I would like to know before I spend the money on these new parts, and it not fix my problem. Below I will list what the specs were in the service manual along with the reading i got. This is my first experience testing ignition components. I just found it odd that all 3 are out of spec according to the service manual. Spark plug cap resistance: 10 kΩ at 20 °C (68 °F) My Reading: 8.90 kΩ Primary coil resistance: 0.18 ~ 0.28 Ω at 20 °C (68 °F) My Reading: Fluctuated between 0.4 - 0.5 Ω Secondary coil resistance: 6.32 ~ 9.48 kΩ at 20 °C (68 °F) Reading was within the specified range. Pickup coil resistance: 459 ~ 561 Ω at 20 °C (68 °F) Reading was within specified range. Rotor rotation direction sensing coil resistance: 0.085 ~ 0.105 Ω at 20 °C (68 °F) My reading was 0.3 Ω
