  1. I am looking for what you would consider the best ATV winch for under $125. Thanks in advance.
  2. Why is it important to have an ATV Winch you may ask? If your ATV gets stuck in the mud, you can attach the winch cable or rope from your ATV winch to lets say a nearby tree, or something else that can act like a large anchor, to then pull yourself out. You can also help get your friend's ATV out of the mud if they get stuck, and be a hero! It's also a must have in the winter, if you have a plow... An ATV winch is a must have accessory for most 4WD ATVs, especially if you plan on riding in areas where you may get stuck or need to help a buddy out of a pit. Sure an ATV tow rope might work for that, but it sure is nice to have a winch ready to go and provide that pulling power when needed. If you are debating a synthetic line vs steel cable, read up on the difference, pros, and cons of each. We have an article explaining some of this from a few years back here. Some 2WD utility quads can also make use of a winch. In most cases a 1500lb ATV winch is just fine. If you are moving up to some of the larger ATVs and UTVs and want more power, you can move up to a 2,000lb or 3,500lb winch, depends on what you want to spend really. There are a few good buys under $100 you can find on Amazon today, that will get you going. We wanted to showcase and share a few of these with you. 4. Do you have picture on how to install a winch on a 1993 king quad?
  5. Can you really double the pulling power of your regular winch? Over the years I have discovered methods that might surprise you by how much they can increase the pulling power of your ATV winch. Following these simple tips might be the difference of getting out of a sticky situation and waiting for help. Battery The best solution is preparation. Get a good quality battery and maintain it. The largest your ATV can take with the most “Cold Cranking Amps” will give you the best initial pull. If your at maximum pull and your battery is struggling to provide power, keep the engine running and give the throttle a little gas to help the battery. I haven´t needed to in the past, but some guys install a second heavy duty battery dedicated for recovery. I prefer to go without the extra weight. Snatch block and Cable Use a snatch block to double the line. These things can single-handedly double your direct pulling power and assist in pulling from angles if need be. You will notice the pulling speed is slower, but don´t worry, the extra power you can squeeze out of your winch can be worth the wait in certain situations. The use of a snatch block also means for close pulls you can reach the ideal length of cable for the pull. One layer of cable (5 rolls) wrapped on the drum will pull securely and at maximum power. Winches are rated for their pull strength at this amount of cable on the drum. The angle of the cable leaving the drum should be perpendicular as well. If the cable is at an angle, the winch will not be working at capacity. Pulling methods Creating the path of least resistance will also dramatically increase the pulling power of your winch. Always angle the front tires of the stuck ATV in the direction of the pull. If possible, the stuck ATV should be driven towards the direction of the pull, but only at moderate throttle and start slow. Let the winch cool and power regenerate after 1.5 minutes of continuous use. Avoid damage and overheating to maintain the power and life of your winch. If stuck in snow or mud, dig out around the tires and use twigs, sticks and brush to provide traction. Doing this right the first time might take an extra few minutes, but can save you hours. Sam is an ATV enthusiast and updates his adventure website with outdoor tips and articles, including a review on the 4500lb Superwinch winch.

  8. I just picked up a 2008 Kawasaki Teryx 750 LE 4x4 and am looking for Wench Suggestions. It was used by an old man to check his mail and only has 30 hours on it! I intend to use this on my very steep property like a small tractor. I had a old Ford 1220 Tractor and with its high center of gravity and lack of 4 wheel drive it was useless! To the point, I am looking a wench suggestions to help my new tool do its job! Even though the front bumper is drilled for a wench, I understand that I need a wench plate and that some wenches will not fit without body mods. Does 3500 Lbs capacity sound right? Thanks!
  9. I haa problem with the controller on a Harbor Freight winch. The control box went out a while back. It has a manual switch on the handle-bar and a plug in for a remote that I never purchased. I replaced the solenoids and it worked a couple of times and is dead again. Is there a universal replacement that anyone has used and would use again? Remote control or manual /remote combo, no preference.

  12. My non-running '08 450 hour 1450 mile 450 grizzly investment paid off! I paid a buck per cc...yup, $450. It smoked mosquito-fogger bad, was missing starter solenoid, a fuse, racks and a few small plastics, needed a rear ujoint, a brake caliper and lever. Popped in the fuse, plugged in starter solenoid and a carb clean out came next. After an oil change, seafoam treatment, and reseating rings by very hard and hot riding towing a 5' disc for two hours, it completely stopped it's bad habit! Changed oil and filter again (went synthetic), and have put a hundred hours of trail-busting and mountain climbing, everything is working perfectly, and not using any oil. My current task is to repair the winch, if possible. It was crammed jam-packed full of dust, rust, and mud. I disassembled it, cleaned it completely, found nothing overtly appearing broken, but it feels like the knob for freewheel/engage is "sticky". I mean, REALLY sticky-the Mitsubishoid rhombus-triad looking mechanism appears to not release, unless I pull or tap on it. I've not yet reassembled it, want to find out if the disengage action is normally this "sticky". Anyone have experience with this? How about a schematic, or manual?
  13. Finding the right winch for your ATV is pretty easy if you know what you are looking for, but if you don't, it can be pretty challenging. What differentiates winches from one another can can mean the difference of getting unstuck or staying stuck. QuadBoss winches start at 2500lb and go up to 5000lb, with the option if wire cable or rope. Our recommendation is to go with the rope as it's easy to work with and it won't develop the burrs that can occur on steel cable, making it safer to handle without gloves, although careless use will cause knots. QuadBoss offers their winches with Dyneema Rope in the models below: QuadBoss 2500lb Winch with Dyneema Rope RP25WS - $186.58 on Amazon QuadBoss 3500lb Winch with Dyneema Rope RP35WS - $193.74 on Amazon Quadboss 5000lb Winch with Dyneema Rope RP5000SR - $257.57 on Amazon If you chose to go with wire cable, here are your choices: QuadBoss 2500lb Winch with Wire Cable RP25WC - $166.12 on Amazon QuadBoss 3500lb Winch with Wire Cable RP35WC - $173.28 on Amazon Quadboss 5000lb Winch with Wire Cable Rp5000qb - $229.91 on Amazon QUADBOSS 2500lb and 3500lb winches feature: 2 Stage planetary gear system for fast line speed Low electric current Aluminum engagement lever Automatic load-holding self locking brake Power in & power out Free spooling Sealed & Water Resistant ¼" safety hook Handlebar mounted switch Roller fairlead 3Hp, 3.5Hp, heavy duty electric permanent magnetic motor 39' x 3/16" aircraft cable Wire Cable or Grey Dyneema® rope - Rated line to pull 2500lbs QuadBoss model specific mount kits and accessories sold separately One Year Limited Warranty QUADBOSS 5000lb winches feature: Wireless and handheld remote controls included Sealed and water-resistant Automatic load: holding self-locking brake Low electric current Free-spooling Three-stage, metal-planetary gear system for fast line speed Aluminum engagement lever Includes 50 ft. wire cable or 50 ft. synthetic Dyneema® rope One-year limited warranty Don't forget to get your self a QuadBoss Winch Accessory Kit! 15. I have the winch installed on my 2000 350 honda, and was wondering instead of wiring the toggle-switch(whatever that switch is called to make the cable go in or out) into a wire that is only on with the key, could I instead just put an inline 20amp fuse somewhere along the toggle-switch wire, shouldn't that prevent over loading anything if something happens to the winch or switch
  16. I bought the Grip Tools 3000 lb 12 Volt Electric ATV Winch 28770 from rural king the other day and put it on my polaris and it doesn't work I wired it up like the diagram in the instructions say and it doesn't do anything. The instructions go on and talk about some wires that need to be connected, but there is no extra wires to be hook up.
  17. I am buying a 2500 runva winch and was told that the mounting bracket that comes with it will not work on my 2000 350 honda fourtrax Is there a special mounting bracket I can get that will work without modifing it Thanks.
  18. Does anyone know anything about badland winches these are sold through Harbor Freight? I would not expect too much I dont think. The deal is a 5000 lb atv winch reg.price 219.99 but for a 3 day sale it's 139.99 I read somewhere it's the same as the mile marker brand.
  19. I purchased my first ATV last weekend, it is a Suzuki Eiger 4x4 Semi-Automatic. Along with this I also found a Swisher Plow, Dump Bucket, and Universal Mount for a good price. The final piece I bought was a Warn Winch (XT25). My question is: Does anyone have pictures of how they routed the wires from the winch to the contactor and then to the battery??? Of course you cannot run them anywhere that will come close to the hot engine or where moving parts may pinch the wires.
  20. I got my hands on a new Gorilla 3000lb XT Series ATV Winch from the folks over at www.gorillawinches.com, and I must say that, I was impressed from the moment it arrived. Besides the impressive box, easy to read instructions, and included hardware, this winch just looks like a heavy duty and well designed product. Inside the box was the roller fairlead, rubber stopper, contactor, thumb switch, hook with strap, hardware, and a corded remote! All that was needed additional, was a bracket for my 2006 Yamaha Grizzly, which was available right on their site. INSTALLATION Installing the Gorilla Winch was easy enough. I did it before going out to the field, in the back of my Dodge Ram pick-up! A few tools I had in my box got the job done. The hardest part was removing some of my factory plastic. The bracket mounted right up to my stock frame and the winch right up to the bracket, without an issue. If you know the difference between your positive and negative battery terminals, you'll have no problem hooking this up. I ran the wires up the middle and under the seat, to the battery, and hooked up the switch to my handlebars. It was a breeze. THE FIRST TEST I rode my 2006 Yamaha Grizzly out into a wooded, but open area, to run some small tests with this winch. Operation was very good for a traditional winch. I especially like how smooth the cable turns out in the free wheel/spin mode. Engaging this is easy and the switch is located on the side of the winch. Putting it in this mode allows you to pull out the cable without hassle. I ran it in and out a few times to check out the motor operation and to see if there was any heat coming off of it, which there wasn't. I roped the line around a couple of trees and pulled the Grizzly without any issue, up the hill and tested it letting the winch out slowly back down. The winch Motor sounds strong and smooth, giving me no concerns. I hadn't planned to get out in the mud yet (maybe for my next report), so I thought to myself...How could I really test this thing out? I decided that a good test would be to rope my Grizzly to a tree and see about lifting it off the ground. I know, sounds crazy, and when will this actually apply, but why not. So I let out the winch cable and chucked it over a thick branch and around a tree, probably about 15 feet off the ground. (Don't try this at home and wear safety equipment and protective gear!) I began to pull my 600 lb (dry weight) 2006 Yamaha Grizzly toward the tree, by engaging the winch switch I mounted on the left handle bar. As I got closer to the tree, the front end started to rise. I proceeded to pull the winch cable in and my quad up the tree. It was now about 70 degrees up in the air! I kept going until it was vertical and back tires off the ground! I forgot to get off…What a site…hung my quad off a tree...it was a first for me. I finally let it down after looking at it for a few minutes hanging there. By no means do I suggest for anyone to do something like this with their quad! Nevertheless, it’s a good test for me. I let out enough cable slack to get the hook to slide down toward me and unhook it. I inspected the cable, hook, winch, bracket, and frame. No issues at all. All looked great. At least I know that on my next run, this winch will pull my ATV without a problem. FINAL NOTES This $199 Gorilla winch replaced my older Warn 2500 winch that I believe cost me upwards of $400 or so at the time. You would think that the cost difference would show in the product, but I really can't tell you what the higher priced Warn will give you over the Gorilla. The Gorilla winch works very well and is definitely worth the money. I'll be testing this winch out more on the trails and I'll be sure to report back. Happy Trails! Find ATV Winches on Amazon
