Small, straight jaw vice grips solved my problem. I clamped hook at the start and half way around, clamped it again. Cumbersome, but the spring stayed in position as I coiled it around. Each wrap, holding the spring down tight, remove, adjust & re-clamp the vice grips. After a few wraps, the 2nd vice grip was not needed, which made it easier. Eventually, the remaining coil is small enough that it doesn't fight back & can be put into place. Grease it all & reassembly from there is straightforward & easy. 

Hopefully, this will help someone else. 

'97 Bayou 300 4x4 KLF-300C, but not really brand or model specific.  I'm having trouble re-installing the Big Coil Spring in the recoil (pull rope) starter. I'm hoping someone knows an easy tip or trick.
