Yeah the shifter is closer down by the engine, so its just that the shell was also used by another model huh?

I recently bought a 94 Yamaha kodiak 400 and I'm enjoying it, but something has got me curious there is a hole in the left front fender by the handlebars that isn't damage its clearly a factory made cut and when I google the same model it has that same spot but with a plastic covering over it. What exactly is this spot for?
